SPECIAL PROGRAM: Examining Archaeological FieldWork and Preservation at KingsmillBefore construction began on the Kingsmill Resort, Dr. Kelso, working for theVirginia Historical Landmarks Commission partnered with Anheuser Busch toconduct fieldwork on this site. The goal of this project which lasted from 1972-1976 was to show the range of social and economic life at an early VirginiaCountry Plantation.
That plantation, KINGSMILL PLANTATION, owned by Colonel Lewis BurwellII was the hub of a successful James River community with its grand mansion-house, outbuildings and slave quarters, along with an active ferry landing andwarehouse. During the 18th century the landing was a major port of entry forWilliamsburg, and included an ordinary that provided travelers with entertainment, accommodations, and supplies. The 1736 House of Burgesses mentioned Burwell, the house, and gardens in its proceedings.
Less than a mile away was the PETTUS PLANTATION. Colonel Pettus built hishouse in the 1640s. The plantation, known as Littletown, was a profitable tobaccoproducing enterprise. The manor house featured six rooms, several outbuildings, and a good well.
