Probation• Must maintain a 3.0 GPA in all graduate courses.• Must maintain satisfactory progress on annual evaluations.• Must receive the grade of S in 5980 or 6980. • Students on probation must receive permission of the Graduate

College to enroll.• Students on academic probation will be evaluated at the end of

each subsequent semester. • The probationary requirements must be met within 9 credit hours

of graded graduate course work or one calendar year from being placed on probation, whichever comes first.

• Students who fail to meet criteria during probationary period may be denied future enrollment.

• The responsibility for academic evaluations of students rests with the faculty. If a student feels he or she has received a prejudiced or capricious evaluation by an instructor, and if he or she is unable to resolve the matter in conference with the instructor or the departmental chair, an appeal may be

made to the appeals board of the college offering the course. • General Exam, Thesis, Dissertation

• The Graduate College hears all appeals involving qualifying examinations, comprehensive examinations, general examinations, 5980 (thesis) or (6980) dissertation courses and/or disagreements that may jeopardize the continued enrollment of the student in the Graduate College or graduate program, and other matters of controversy not specifically covered in the Student Handbook.

Academic IssuesAcademic MisconductThe policy regarding dishonest work is detailed in the Academic Misconduct Code, which describes academic misconduct as:

• Cheating: the use of unauthorized materials, methods, or information in any academic exercise, including improper collaboration

• Plagiarism: the representation of the words or ideas of another as one's own

• Fabrication: the falsification or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise

• Fraud• Destruction, misappropriation, or unauthorized possession of

University property or the property of another• Bribery or intimidation• Assisting others in any act proscribed by this Code• Attempting to engage in such acts.

• Departments must file annual reports each year notifying the student and the Graduate College of the students progress

• No later than the end of the first year of graduate study, submit an Advisory Conference Report to the Graduate College.

• When nearing completion of course work and research tools, file an Application for the General Examination in the Graduate College.

• The student must apply for the General Examination at least 2 weeks before the exam is held.

• Within one week after the General Examination is completed, a report signed by the entire committee must be submitted to the Graduate Dean.

• The report indicates satisfactory or unsatisfactory performance on the General Exam.

• If the performance is unsatisfactory an approved plan to re-take the General Exam must be submitted to the Graduate College.

• Failure of the General Exam a second time will result in dismissal.


• Establish the Doctoral Committee no later than the time the General Examination is successfully completed.

• Doctoral Committee Members must meet guidelines in the Graduate College Bulletin (4.10)

• Enroll in a minimum of two credit hours of 6980 each semester following your initial enrollment. More hours are required to maintain GRA position.

• Submit annually to the Graduate College a progress report performed by the Doctoral Committee.

• Students should meet with Doctoral Committee at least every 6 months and discuss research progress

• Prepare reading copy of dissertation and receive approval from dissertation advisor.

• Submit reading copy to Graduate College with approval of advisor and a request to approve final dissertation committee.

• Distribute reading copies to committee for approval.

• Graduate College must receive from dissertation committee approval of reading copy.

• Graduate College will perform degree check.

• When reading copy and degree check are approved by the Graduate College the student may schedule dissertation defense.

• All reading copy and graduation related deadlines are printed in the class schedule.

• At least 10 business days before the defense the student must submit to the Graduate College a formal announcement of your defense

• Within 72 hours after the defense, submit the authority report form with the results signed by all committee members to the Graduate College.

• Within 60 days after passing the dissertation defense, submit your dissertation to the Graduate College.

• If all graduation requirements, including the depositing of the dissertation, are not complete prior to the start of the next semester students will be required to enroll in an additional 2 hours of 6980.

• One-year interdisciplinary program comprised of a two-course sequence designed to offer students a specialization in the professorate.

• Fall• "Methods" course offered through the Graduate College

would contain didactic and demonstration units to familiarize students with the research, teaching, and service demands of an academic position.

• Spring• Laboratory or practicum where participants are teamed with a

mentor to gain actual teaching experience. Teaching experiences may be at neighboring institutions.

External FellowshipsExternal Fellowships

• Graduate students are encouraged to obtain their own independent fellowships

• Students may receive stipend above $20,000 if fellowship is external and peer-reviewed

• Graduate College will increase stipend level by $2,000/year
