PRESIDENT’S CORNER

HI everyone! As this year draws to a close, I wanted to take a moment and thank you all for making this a great year! We had two huge service events and both were so successful, allowing us to raise hundreds for charities close to your heart. Yours in service, We couldn’t have done any of this without our amazing members and senior officers. We’re sad to see our senior officers go, but we’re so grateful for all their hard work and support these past few years. We’re so proud to see them go onto amazing colleges and futures.

The 2016-2017 officers all have a deep passion for service and their enthusiasm for Key Club is so refreshing. I can safely say that next year will be filled with exciting, unique volunteer opportunities that challenge our members to be better citizens. We will be continuing our events at the Houston Food Bank (they’re always so fun), and we hope to see you at the next one. In addition we will be hosting profit shares, fundraisers and socials. Keep an eye out for our updates! In the meantime, good luck with finals, and have a great summer!! Yours in service, Ankita Ajith James Taylor 2016-2017 Key Club President

Adventures Of Key Club Hi, my name is Sara Meraja and I am a secretary for THS Key Club. My topic for my article today is the one and only, Key Club. Our school is one of the many schools in our district to have a Key Club. I think that it is one of the most wonderful clubs to ever be created. There are many things you do in Key Club. Some includes giving back to the community, making new friends, meeting new people, having tons of fun, and helping to make our earth a better place. We have many activities that anyone is sure to enjoy! We have many events each and every month that members must do to earn hours. Hours are very important in this club. We do everything from washing cars to puppy events to run/walks for charity. My personal favorite was the Halloween trick or treating. We had fun and gave back to children in need! Many of our activities are like this. At our meetings, officers stand up in the front and fill everyone with the information needed for our members. We have lots of fun, even at our meetings! All of the officers are super friendly and welcoming. At our officer meetings, we get all of our questions answered and we get all the help we can get! Everyone is treated equally and with respect. Whenever anyone has input, they are positively answered to. I was nervous at first about being an officer. But as soon as I got done with my interview, I knew there was nothing to worry about. Mrs. Fader and all the officers welcomed me with open arms. We have many on going service events. We had the can tab drive, canned food drive, and many more! If members don't have time to go to events, they do the on going service events. We must go to 2 socials every year. Socials are so exciting. You get to meet new people and make amazing friends! Socials are definitely something you remember all year long. We've had them at Panera Bread, California Pizza, etc. It is a great excuse to get food and mingle! Coming up, we have the Officer Banquet. It is Thursday (tomorrow) at 7pm in Three Olives! All the officers are going to get to know each other more and have a grand time, talking and snacking. I can't wait! In conclusion, Key Club is a wonderful and exciting club. It will definitely be something you look back on and be glad you did it. Thank you! - Sara Meraja, Secretary

Joining Key Club Joining Key Club has proven to be one of the best decisions I have made throughout my entire high school career. Key Club is a club that welcomes everyone with open arms and shapes willing, perseverant, and determined members into better people who are constantly giving back to those in need. Not only does Key Club establish compassion within people by providing numerous community service activities, but it also helps a person develop skills including leadership, management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. Additionally, the skills acquired from Key Club will be not only useful throughout high school but throughout life as well. Key Club offers important skills, different views of life, and an enjoyable time through high school while at the same time allowing members to give back to the community. Not only does joining Key Club allow a person to volunteer at different projects, but also it gives a feeling of joy and accomplishment that cannot be obtained doing anything else. Key Club has been expanding exponentially throughout the years because of how much it has achieved and because of the significant impact it has on a member and the community. After I joined Key Club, I realized that it was not only a club that had sparked my interest, but it was a lifestyle dedicated to serving others. Key Club broadens member’s views and perspectives of community service by allowing its members to realize the significance and importance of serving communities. Enhanced by dedicated, committed, and passionate members, James Taylor High School Key Club has been crucial in making me realize the true meaning of community service, as I’m completely sure has also been to many others. Key Club has taught me a number of skills that will remain with me for my entire life. Key Club reminds members that despite sacrificing time, and energy, the feeling of accomplishment that comes after helping out others is completely rewarding. Aiding others, especially those who need the most help, should not be done to obtain a reward for doing so; it should be done to aid society and to truly feel gratified, and accomplished. Key Club provides the foundations for a better world in which helping out should not be done for a reward, but for personal fulfillment. James E. Taylor High School Key Club helps students realize the potential and the change they can make not only in the community, but also all over the world. -Claudia Di Bonavetura, Vice President

THS Key Club Summer Activities This upcoming summer, our club has many things for both members and the community to look out for. Just because the school year has ended, it doesn’t mean that our volunteering opportunities have as well. We will still be offering our members summer service hours.

One of the events our club will be holding is a summertime favorite, a car wash. Most of the time, we hold more than a single car wash. Members come and participate by washing, drying, or sign holding. The event itself is a great place for friends to get together and give some of their time out to have fun and give back. I find myself enjoying these car washes a lot because I am surrounded by people who have the same passion for volunteering as I do. The “chore” of car washing becomes a great, summertime memory as members come together and have lots of fun.

Another event our club likes to hold are club socials. Socials allow for members to hang out and get to know each other a little bit more. They bring our club closer together. Food oriented socials such as, ice cream or burger socials are a favorite for our members. The joy that comes from a full stomach and a table of friends draw our members out to Key Club events during their summer break. Another popular social are Ice Skating Socials. This kind of social beats the hot, Texas, summer sun. The cool chill of the ice provides a great place for members to engage in a long time hobby or try their luck on the ice for the first time. Members enjoy coming out to skate and meet up with their peers while also completing Key Club requirements. I find these socials to be extremely beneficial as the club gains funds while allowing our members to have fun and make use of their summer break.

A very special volunteer opportunity our club offers is located at the Houston Food Bank. Volunteers come to the food bank and help package and/or hand out food to those who are in need of the assistance. It is an honor to volunteer at our local food bank as it allows our members to directly give back to the community they are working to serve. Volunteering at the food bank allows members to see whom exactly they are helping and how much their work pays off.

Even though the schoolwork has ended, volunteering has not. Our club will remain as active as ever this summer. Our volunteers will participate in car washes, socials, at food banks, and more. -Nina Tran, Historian
