JAMES NIZAM | Biography
Tel: 778 997 3649Email: [email protected]
574 52nd Street Delta, BC CanadaV4M 3S5
James Nizam creates photographs from temporary installations that he builds in homes and buildings that are slated for
demolition. The installations are the result of his interactions with the echoing histories and lingering physical traces of the
various sites that he is exploring. Nizam’s work is bound up with the history and memory of “place” and his work testifies
to a record of the built environment in transition.
Born in Bedfordshire, England, James Nizam now lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. Since completing a B.F.A. at the
University of British Columbia in 2002, his work has been exhibited throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.
Upcoming exhibitions include Christophe Guye Galerie (Zurich), KunstHalle Dusseldorf, Dazibao (Montreal), Yukon Arts
Centre, and Birch Libralato Gallery (Toronto). Most recently acquired for the Toronto Dominion, Bank of Montreal, and
Louis Vuitton Collections, his work is also included in private collections in Canada, the United States and Europe. His
work has been reviewed or published in Flash Art, Border Crossings, Canadian Art, and The Globe & Mail, The National
Post and the New Yorker Magazine. In 2011 he was long listed for the Sobey Art Award, Canada’s preeminant prize for
artist achievement. In 2014 Nizam will be building his first public art sculpture commissioned through Concord Adex in
Toronto.
