My Healeyby James Blackford

My Healey is not a barn find, or a carthat I’ve owned forever, or even a re-placement for one I owned years ago,or one that I spent years and tens of thou-sands of dollars restoring. But as withany car, it has a story.

The Healey is actually my first British car.I had an old Alfa Romeo in college, andmy roommate had an MGA, which heeventually traded in for a Healey 3000,so I was familiar with the mark. At thedemise of the Alfa, the particulars ofwhich is another story, I bought a CorvairMonza. I eventually traded the Corvairfor a Datsun 1600 roadster which wasreally an LBC made in Japan. After anumber of years the Datsun was suffer-ing from rust and a worn clutch at 120kmiles, so it was sold to be replaced by aMercury Capri. Along the way therewere a number of Volvos, including atweaked PV544 which was used for hillclimbs and gymkhanas. The next sports

car was a Fiat 124 Sport Coup; then nofun cars for a long time. In those days,all of my cars were “daily drivers”.

About fifteen years ago my wife and Italked about a Morgan or a Healey, butit didn’t seem to make sense to own anLBC since my job often kept me awayfrom home for weeks, and in severalcases, months at a time. I remember how

the bug bit me again when my sister Lindabought the MGA (she also had an Alphaback in the day), but my wife said itwasn’t practical since we didn’t have athree car garage, and I was still workingon the road. That all changed aboutthree years ago when I retired, and wewere having dinner with our son and hiswife, when a senior couple pulled up inan MGB. My son wanted to know why

I hadn’t bought a sports car now that Ihad the time to enjoy it. Good question.I asked him what he thought it shouldbe, to which his reply was a TR6. Goodchoice I thought, so the hunt was on.

I looked at a number of TR6s that werefor sale within reasonable driving dis-tance, but didn’t find any that I wanted.I called my sister to ask if she would haveany leads since she belonged to the club;she suggested Brit Bits and HMS. BritBits had several, but again, nothing thatI was interested in. I called Clarke atHMS, but at that time they did not haveany TR6s for sale, and did not know ofany. They did, however, have twoHealeys; a BRG on consignment, and ablue one which HMS owned. I’d al-ways wanted a big Healey and life isshort, so after some negotiations, Ibought the blue one.

Unfortunately, a number of records forthe car have been lost so I don’t, in allcases, know what has been done to thecar or when. I have the original owner’smanual, so I know some of the car’s his-tory. The car was originally sold in Port-land Oregon. Two years and 20,000

miles later it was sold to the next ownerwho kept it until 1985 and drove it for120,000 miles. The next owner kept itfor two years and only put 500 miles onit during that time. Unfortunately, at thispoint the trail goes cold and is not pickedup again until purchased by HistoricMotor Sports from a gentleman in Ari-zona who I know, from a sales receiptfor tires, owned it as early as 2010. Theodometer showed 77,000 miles when Ipurchased it, which is probably 177,000miles. I have put on about 2k since I’veowned it. It is a numbers matching carwith the exception of the transmission.One of the major changes to the car is aSmitty’s conversion to a Toyota 5-speed.Although it would be nice to have theoriginal 4-speed with overdrive, theToyota 5-speed sure makes it a plea-sure to drive. I remember the idiosyn-crasies with my roommates overdrive.The exhaust system had been replacedwith a stainless steel system, includingtube headers, and it sounds great! Thegas tank has been replaced with an alu-minum one.

for most of its existence, there is no ruston the frame or bodywork, and the origi-nal paint is still there. The oil pressure isup to spec, and the compression in allcylinders is very good. I suspect theengine has been rebuilt at least once. Itdoes have the standard oil leak from therear seal. As an aside, my mechanic for

Well the 2015 LBC season is officiallystarted. We had a very successful TechSession and our first Sunday DinnerDrive. We have a full season ahead ofus.

In addition, the Lakes Region and NorthCouncil are now well established. Theyhave already planned one outing and areworking on another. Keep in mind thatany outing that the Lakes Regionand North Council plan is open to allBCNH members. We are not tryingto establish two separate clubs here, butone club with two opportunities eachmonth for members to get together andshare their common interests.

Six months ago, we had about 40 Mem-bers that came to the regular monthlymeeting at the Weathervane. This monthwe had a total of 80 between theManchester council and the Lakes Re-gion and North council. That’ s twicethe number of people now getting inon the fun.

And, there is some hope that the suc-cess of the Lakes Region and NorthCouncil will encourage those membersin the Seacoast and in the MonadnockRegion to establish Councils of their own.

So maybe this is the best time to review

again what BCHN activities you reallydo like best. Over 200 of you eitherjoined or renewed this year so we mustbe doing something right! The trick forThe Monarchy is to find ways of doingmore of the things you like best anddropping those things that you don’treally care about.

The May BCNH meeting was called toorder at 7PM by Prime Minister BobMichell. It was held at Mo Joes againthis month – it appears we probably havea new home. There were 62 membersin attendance – an all time high.

We welcomed five new members – AmySimoneau has a 1969 Herald Triumph13/60. She attended with her dad. Wewelcomed back former member MattHogan who has a 1977 TR7. Also inattendance were Doug and Diana Scheieof Manchester – they have a 1978 Tri-umph Spitfire 1600. Shane Yeaton ofAuburn has a 64 Triumph Spitfire andlives in Auburn. Lastly, Dirk Smith joinedus – he has a 1980 MGB. We also wel-comed back Art and Lydia Reed whohad just returned from Arizona.

BCNHers attend 100th BillieHoliday Tribute at the Capital

Center for the Arts.

Nine BCNH members met at El Rodeoin Concord for dinner and then attendeda wonderful concert by “CLAIRDEE”in tribute to Billie Holiday. Clairdee wasaccompanied by the Capital City JazzOrchestra. We all had a wonderful timeat dinner and at the concert.

Our first topic of discussion was the cal-endar. Sue MacDuff led us through thepast events (a drive led by John Bow)and upcoming events such as the techsession, the JANE Magical MysteryTour, British by the Sea. Review the cal-endar to see what you might like to at-tend. The northern council meeting is onMay 21st at the Common Man in Ply-mouth – now that the weather is nicer itmight be nice to drive up and join them.

We then reviewed the Show of Dreamsplanning. By the time this is publishedthe registration form will be on theBCNH website. Planning is comingalong nicely. We have cars registeredand we have vendors who have signedup. Don’t forget we will need raffle items.If you don’t have time to shop you candonate money and we will do the shop-ping for you. There is a list of items wewould like for the raffle table in the news-letter. (see page 15)

You are more than welcome to get to-gether with other members and poolyour funds to buy something off the listor you can just call one of the SODmembers and we will do the shopping.

Did you know we have a Facebookpage? You should check it out to seewhat is there. We’ve posted photos ofcars that members drove to the meet-ing. Don’t forget we will be starting thecruise in to the BBC in Manchester soon.

The port-a-potty not quite 50-50 rafflewas won by Deb Curtis again – that girlshould go buy a Powerball ticket! Twohundred dollars went into the potty fund.We will all appreciate the air conditionedreal toilet rest station the day of theshow!

Minutes of the NorthernCouncil meeting

The third meeting of the BCNH North-ern Council was held at the CommonMan in Plymouth on Thursday, May 21st.

The meeting was called to order by Min-ister Karl at 7:02 pm with 23 current andhopefully a few new members attend-ing. The secretary’s and treasurer’s re-port were accepted as printed in thenewsletter.

Karl started off with a story of taking aride to Massena, NY to meet a gentle-man that ended up having more than justone car for sale. In fact he had eightmotorcycles, three Triumphs, two MGs,two JEEPs and an assortment of manyparts and tools for sale.

We next met a couple new to the group,Ron and Sally Small from Franconia.Ron had owned his own business forover 30 years working on British carsand he still has his sense of humor. Theyhave an Austin Healey, an E type and aBentley amongst their collection of cars.

Shirley Splaine gave us an update on her33 MGJ2, Maggie, which is in the pro-cess of getting a new dashboard fromEngland. The repairs are not quite com-pleted but Shirley did make it clear thatMaggie needs to be ready for the up-coming Castle in the Clouds show whichwill be on Saturday, July 11th. Shirleybrought her sister Joan and Russ wasthere to drive the ladies.

Several people brought their cars, topdown and collars up for the chilly ridehome. Prime Minister Bob brought hisMGTD and Neil Flaherty brought hismodern MGTD. Marge and ElliotGrover brought their MGTD as well.Beverly Bonner arrived in her SunbeamAlpine and Pete Wirth brought his TR 8.

Don Margeson told a very funny storyof his adventure with his 67 Austin Healybreaking down, hitchhiking to Washing-

ton DC in the middle of the night andtowing the Healy home with his 67 MGB.Well you can laugh now but at the time itprobably was not a lot of fun. He didluck out and find a board on the roadthat said Washington DC which madethe hitchhiking a little easier (what luck).

Bob & Diana Stanley passed aroundregistration forms for the Show ofDreams coming up on July 25th. Theyalso provided information for sponsor-ship for the upcoming 19th Annual Showof Dreams to benefit the High Hopesfoundation of NH and the NH FoodBank. The British Beer Company inManchester has donated $500 to theShow of Dreams, a cruise in is on theschedule for June 9th to tour the beercompany.

Willy Lutz told us about his good friendthat worked on his MG and RobMedynski, owner of British Vacuum Unitwas able to join us along with his MumJeanne and his sister Alice. Paul andDoris Karle made the trip up with Normawho was introduced as the President andthen as our Club Secretary, she doeswear many hats!

Prime Minister Bob did an overview ofseveral upcoming events including Brit-ish By The Sea, June 7th and BritishMotor Car Festival, June 10th – 14th. Hethen turned the floor over to Diana whofilled us in on the details for a “Show andTell” event scheduled for Sunday August9th at the Taylor Community in Laconia,more information to follow, please comeout for this great event if you can, a cook-out is planned.

Minister Karl adjourned the meeting at8:04 pm and everyone had a chance toappreciate the cars in the parking lotbefore departing for the evening. Anyerrors or omissions are due to incorrectcorrections from Minister Karl.

There are two big events this month,MG2015 in Niagara Falls, Canada June8th-12th and British Motor Car Festivalin Bristol, RI June 11th-14th We will begoing to MG2015, meeting a group inBennington, VT on Sunday June 7th todrive via Watkins Glen. Should anyonegoing want to join us, let me know.

New England Triumphs will be doing atour of Western, MA on June 13th andBCNH members are welcomed to jointhem. On the 19th-21st the VintageMotor Festival will take place at theThompson Motor Speedway in Thomp-son, CT.

The Jaguar club, JANE will be holdingtheir Spring Slalom on June 20th inNorth Andover, MA BCNH membersare welcomed to participate . British CarDay is at Larz Anderson in Brookline,MA on June 29th. This is a lovely venue,worth a visit.

A few future events to keep in mind areour North Country Drive, August 8th and9th and the Speckle Hen Run at theKitzhof Inn October 2nd-4th.

my Japanese daily drivers who used towork for a BMC dealer in Lowell saidthat they used to call that “automaticrustproofing”.

HMS installed a patch piece on a rearfender and replaced all the fender fas-tenings. It was finished with a top-notchpaint job in a color close to Healey Blue.HMS also did some minor mechanicalwork and replaced a number of items asrequired. HMS installed sound dead-ening in the door panels and new liningin the trunk, as well as a plethora of othertrim pieces, hoses, clamps, bushings,etc. I won’t bore you with the ratherextensive list of things replaced, any ofwhich wouldn’t have prevented it frombeing a good “driver.” The vinyl toplooks very recent, and the leather seatsshow some minor wear. HMS adver-

tised it as an older restoration, and thatis certainly believable.

I do have to admit that I do not find thecar that comfortable to drive for morethan a few hours, probably due in partto my advanced age, and also due tosome idiosyncrasies that had beenpointed out in the contemporary motor-ing press. To wit, the pedals are a littletoo close together, and due to the longthrow of the clutch petal, I have to sittoo close to the steering wheel for mycomfort, even with the adjustable wheelas far forward as it will go. A seat back

that is a little less upright would be great.And, did I mention getting in and out ofthe car?

Overall, the car looks and runs great, andI do enjoy driving it. The 5-speedcoupled to the torquey six allows forminimal shifting if your left leg is gettingtired. It will accelerate from 1000 rpmin 5th with no hesitation. But hey, isn’tshifting part of the pleasure of driving yourLBC? I get comments wherever I go. Iactually had a women follow us for a fewmiles just so she could tell me that theHealey was her favorite car. Last yearwhen my granddaughter and I werestopped so that I could get a picture forthe Moss Motoring Challenge, a guy ina Ferrari Testa Rosa stopped to admirethe Healey, while I admired his Ferrari.I almost hate to stop for gas becausethere’s always somebody that has tocome over and tell me his Healey story,which seems to be difficult to do withoutputting his hands on it.

My wife and I love taking the car forrides, enjoying the sunshine on those raredays that it is available (the sunshine, notthe car.) We have used the Moss Mo-toring Challenge as an excuse to get outand drive. My youngest granddaughteris always ready to go for a ride in searchof a picture for the challenge. My grand-son thinks the car is great, but after at-tending the Show of Dreams with me lastyear, he thinks he’d like a TVR. (Doesanybody remember when there was aTVR dealer in Hudson?)

At first I was very nervous about drivingit in any kind of traffic, as I was veryconcerned with someone not seeing itand causing some damage. In fact, I havehad to stand on the binders once whensome little old lady pulled out in front ofme. As time went on, I became a littlemore comfortable driving it in traffic, butstill drive with the radar turned up high.As Sam at Brit Bits said when I waslooking, “We’re just Custodians,” and Idon’t want to be the one to cause the

loss of the car.

Due to the severe winter we have justgone through, the car hasn’t seen the lightof day in almost five months, but nowthat the weather has finally becomefriendly for LBCs, I have begun enjoy-ing it again. I still don’t have a three-cargarage, so my truck gets covered insnow and ice all winter, requiring onemore chore when it snows, but it’s worth

it. Regarding my son, who started it all,he’s saving his money to buy that TR 6for himself.

Show of DreamsMeeting Notes

John Bowe Drive

On the chilly morning of April 28th Brit-ish Cars of NH and New England Tri-umph members met at John Bowe’sshop, Underground Cycle inHampstead, NH for John’s annual SpringDrive. Gathered together were 20 Brit-ish cars and one British motorcycle. Af-ter a bit of socializing over coffee and

doughnuts, we were on our way. Al-though this drive was shorter than mostJohn has done, we all agreed this was

the best! We started on time and therewere even written directions which Ithink is a first. John admitted that hedrove the route and wrote them downfrom memory. Job well done!

We stretched our legs along a few minorhighways to cruise along some very lovelyLBC roads that John had been wantingto include. These were just right withgentle curves, good road surfaces andfew stop signs so we were all able tostay together. The drive ended at TheHoly Grail where 35 hungry participantswere seated together in the loft for ameal. Several joined John for the driveback to his shop.

Jay Welch from High Hopes Founda-tion has volunteered to coordinate thevolunteers for the spectator parking areaand to guide the spectators onto the fieldtoward the donation car.
