JESUS’TONGUE,
YOUR TONGUE
Not many of you should becometeachers, my fellow believers, becauseyou know that we who teach will bejudged more strictly. 2 We all stumble inmany ways. Anyone who is never atfault in what they say is perfect, able tokeep their whole body in check.
JAMES 3:1-12
3 When we put bits into the mouths ofhorses to make them obey us, we canturn the whole animal. 4 Or take shipsas an example. Although they are solarge and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudderwherever the pilot wants to go.
JAMES 3:1-12
5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part ofthe body, but it makes great boasts.Consider what a great forest is set onfire by a small spark. 6 The tongue alsois a fire, a world of evil among the partsof the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life onfire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
JAMES 3:1-12
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles andsea creatures are being tamed andhave been tamed by mankind, 8 but nohuman being can tame the tongue. It isa restless evil, full of deadly poison.
JAMES 3:1-12
9 With the tongue we praise our Lordand Father, and with it we curse humanbeings, who have been made in God’slikeness. 10 Out of the same mouthcome praise and cursing. My brothersand sisters, this should not be.
JAMES 3:1-12
11 Can both fresh water and salt waterflow from the same spring? 12 Mybrothers and sisters, can a fig tree bearolives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neithercan a salt spring produce fresh water.
JAMES 3:1-12
Teachers will be
judged with
greater
strictness
Taming the
tongue
The mouth is a
revelation of
the heart
teachers
FOUR
RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR THOSE CALLED TO
BE TEACHERS
BE MORE
PATIENT.
BE A
DEVOTED
STUDENT.
KNOW THAT
TEACHERS ARE
JUDGED MORE
STRICTLY BY
GOD.
Not many of you should becometeachers, my fellow believers, becauseyou know that we who teach will bejudged more strictly.
JAMES 3:1
KNOW THAT
TEACHERS ARE
JUDGED MORE
STRICTLY BY
PEOPLE.
Not many of you should becometeachers, my fellow believers, becauseyou know that we who teach will bejudged more strictly.
JAMES 3:1
Check your motives. Check your heart.
THREE
RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR HEARERS
KNOW THAT
WE ALL
STUMBLE.
2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyonewho is never at fault in what they say isperfect, able to keep their whole bodyin check.
JAMES 3:2
KNOW THE
DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN BEING
A CRITIC AND
BEING A COACH
The difference is time and tone. When do you say it? How do you say it?
CRITIC COACHCorrection made public, notprivate because the goal is tocrush you, not build you.
Correction made private
Critic will wait until you’revulnerable.
Coach will wait until you’reteachable.
Critic’s intent is to make surethat everyone is invited tojoin them in the criticism
Coach is trying to protectyou from the criticism tohelp you learn and grow.
KNOW THAT WE
ALL HAVE OUR
BEST AND
WORST DAYS
If we love someone, we present them on their best day. If we hate someone, we present them on their worst day. It
really reveals your heart how you present them.
TONGUE
BIG THINGS HAVE
LITTLE POWER
THREE
COMPARISONS
ON TONGUE
BIT OF A
HORSE
3 When we put bits into the mouths ofhorses to make them obey us, we canturn the whole animal.
JAMES 3:3
A bit is a type of horsetack used in equestrianactivities, usually madeof metal or a syntheticmaterial, and is placedin the mouth of a horseor other equid andassists a rider incommunicating with theanimal.
It rests on the bars ofthe mouth in aninterdental regionwhere there are noteeth.
A SHIP
AND IT’S
RUDDER
4 Or take ships as an example. Althoughthey are so large and are driven bystrong winds, they are steered by avery small rudder wherever the pilotwants to go.
JAMES 3:4
It’s called, “The Bismark.”The Nazis commission, theBismark battleship in 1940.Imagine this technology in1940. Stretching 825 feet, itwas the largest battleship inthe world. It boasted eightguns that held shells fifteeninches across as well assome five dozen otherarmaments.
The Bismark’s onboardtargeting computer was soprecise that it blew awaythe HMS Hood, which hadbeen the pride of the RoyalNavy, with a single shot.
Think of a boxing match setfor fifteen rounds. Two guyswalk in, one guy punchesthe other guy, that guypasses out and it’s over inone shot. Nobody elsewants to get in the ringwith that guy. As grand asthe Bismark was, it had onesmall but fatal weakness.
A vulnerable rudder waslocated right beneath itsthermal exhaust port. Inthe darkness of night onMay 24, 1941, the RoyalNavy attacked the ship withlittle success until onetorpedo hit this rudder. Theboat was severely disabled, attacked fiercely, anddefeated.
You may be big, strong, forceful, successful, impenetrable, but your
tongue is the vulnerable point, and it can become the one thing that
undermines everything.
Forest
fires
5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part ofthe body, but it makes great boasts.Consider what a great forest is set onfire by a small spark. 6 The tongue alsois a fire, a world of evil among the partsof the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life onfire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
JAMES 3:5-8
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles andsea creatures are being tamed andhave been tamed by mankind, 8 but nohuman being can tame the tongue. It isa restless evil, full of deadly poison.
JAMES 3:5-8
Gehenna was a place wheregodless people would gettogether to do godlessthings. Maybe illicit sexualsin, and worship false gods, and all kinds of horrible, despicable, deplorable, disgusting evil, and thenthey would sacrifice theirown children, so there waschild sacrifice in this place.
All the garbage would betaken out of the city, out toGehenna, this cursed place, and it would be set on fire, and you could see at adistance the garbageburning day and night.
We bless,
We curse
9 With the tongue we praise our Lordand Father, and with it we curse humanbeings, who have been made in God’slikeness. 10 Out of the same mouthcome praise and cursing. My brothersand sisters, this should not be.
JAMES 3:9-12
11 Can both fresh water and salt waterflow from the same spring? 12 Mybrothers and sisters, can a fig tree bearolives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neithercan a salt spring produce fresh water.
JAMES 3:9-12
Get to the
source
How to
maintain a
holy tongue
Whom do I
idolize?
Don’t idolize anyone. If you idolize them, you’ll demonize them. If you set
them up, it’s only so that eventually you can set them on fire.
What do I
covet?
You can’t rejoice with those who rejoice. You can’t celebrate God’s grace. You’re angry at it. You’re
covetous of it. And that affects your heart and that comes out in your
speech.
What lies do I
perpetuate?
We’ve heard something that we’re sharing. We don’t know if it’s true or
not. Or we heard something, we know it’s not true, but we’re going to let it go
because it benefits me.
What gossip
do I enjoy?
If somebody sins against you, go talk to them, don’t talk about them.
That’s gossip.
Who are we
bitter
against?
You’ve got two options: bitterness or forgiveness. Bitterness is the enemy of
forgiveness.
Who has
hurt me?
Hurt people tend to hurt people.
HOW DO I LIKE
TO PLAY GOD?
Jesus is the only person who’s ever lived that never stumbled in any way.
Everything he always said was the right thing, at the right time, in the right
way, perfectly.
Jesus gets the last word. He who does not stumble in any way goes to the cross to suffer and die for we who have stumbled in many ways.
