    continued support.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Welsh

    Clean Your Hands

Cleaning your hands is the most effective way to

prevent the spread of germs. Regular hand cleaning

with soap and water, or an alcohol based hand

sanitizer will reduce the risk of getting sick.

    Cleaning your hands should occur:

    Before preparing meals

    Before eating

    After using the washroom

    After coughing or sneezing

    After blowing your nose

    After playing with pets

    After playing outdoors

Use warm water and soap and lather and scrub for at

least 15 seconds if your hands are visibly dirty.

For more information, talk to your school nurse or go

    to www.niagararegion.ca/health.

    PINK SHIRT DAY– Feb. 22nd

Make sure to wear your pink shirt

on Feb. 22nd to show your support

    for Bullying Prevention.

  • SCHOOL WEBSITE

Please access the school website at

    www.jamesmorden.dsbn.org. There are useful links

to classroom websites, helpful resources, calen-

dars, and newsletters. Also, there are a number of

class websites that have now been linked to the

school site with information about events in class-

rooms, homework, and updates on student pro-

    gress.

    ABSENCE / LATE

    Regular and punctual attendance at

school is extremely important. If how-

ever, your child is going to be absent

or late, please call the school prior to

8:40 am. Thank you to those parents that do call

    regularly.

    PARKING

A reminder, that the right lane

in front of the school is reserved

for buses and taxis. If you

    require parking, Caledonia St.,

Douglas Dr., and Adams St. are

    all good alternatives, if the

    parking lot is full. Please

remember that you are at risk

of being towed from the plaza parking lot next

door as it is a private lot.

    STUDENT SAFETY

When you are picking up students at 3:15 pm,

please wait at the front or south side of the build-

ing until the bell rings. Please do not go beyond

the end of the fire lane (end of the gym wall).

The backyard and tarmac are often used for

instructional purposes and teachers need to be

    able to identify safety concerns.

Please note, only service/therapy dogs are per-

mitted at DSBN schools. All other animals are not

permitted on school property. Thank you.

A reminder that smoking is not permitted an-

ywhere on school property (including in vehi-

cles). There is a $350 fine for smoking on James

    Morden premises.

    BINGO

Every year, the school raises money through

BINGO that pays for a variety of things for

students (eg. almost all bus costs for field

trips, presentations to the school, uniforms,

    etc.).

    WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP

If you are available to volunteer even just

one afternoon it would be extremely helpful

    for our school community.

Please complete the form on the last page,

as soon as possible, if you are available or

interested in finding out more about the short

training and dates that we require volun-

    teers.

    OUR STUDENTS THANK YOU!

    Materials:

    • Two 1 litre plastic pop bottles

    • Scissors

    • Optional: Coloured construction paper

    • Masking tape

    • Ribbons

    • Two plastic ring six pack holders

    • Two 2.4 metre strings• An adult helper

    1. Ask your adult helper to cut the bottoms off of the two plastic pop bottles.

    2. Fit the bottles together so there is a neck on either end. Tape the bottles together to form a football shape.

    3. Cover the bottles with construction paper and ribbon if you want to decorate your zoom ball.

    5. Take the six-pack holders and cut the rings apart to make four two-loop handles.

    4. Thread the two strings through the bottles.6. Tie a set of handles to the ends of each string.

    7. Get at friend and you are ready to play. Each player holds onto two handles and pulls on the strings until

they are tight. Slide the zoom ball to one end. When it is at your end snap your hands apart to send the zoom

ball back to your friend. To catch the zoom ball, keep your hands together.

    EXPLANATION:

The pushing action of the strings sets the zoom ball in motion. When the zoom ball reaches the other end of

the strings, an opposite pushing action, your friend snapping the strings, stops the ball for a moment and then

sends it in the reverse direction.

  • Water Does Wonders Pledge Campaign

As part of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC), Niagara has teamed up with communities across Ontario to launch thewww.waterdoeswonders.ca Pledge Campaign to encourage organizations and families to make it easier for children to choose water over sugary drinks.

We can all help by making water easier to access and by re-ducing the amount of sugary drinks we serve and sell to children. By taking the pledge, you are affirming your commitment to help children sip less sugar.

    What can you do?

    KINDERGARTEN COMMUNICATION OF LEARNING

On February 10, the new Kindergarten Communication of Learning reporting

document developed by the Ministry of Education will be sent home for our

Year 1 and Year 2 Kindergarten students.

The new Kindergarten Communication of Learning reporting document will provide parents/guardians with

comments about their child’s strengths and growth in relation to the overall expectations of The Kindergar-

ten Program (2016). The overall expectations are connected with the following four frames: Belonging and

Contributing; Self-Regulation and Well-Being; Demonstrating Literacy and Mathematics Behaviours; and

    Problem Solving and Innovating.

Since September, our Kindergarten educator teams have been observing and documenting a wide range of

evidence of each child’s thinking and learning within a play environment. The documentation gathered will

reflect your child’s key learnings, recognize growth and possible next steps for learning. The next steps will

provide parents/guardians with information about how we will support your child’s new learning at school

as it relates to the Kindergarten Program’s expectations.

We recognize and appreciate your continued support throughout the year.

    Head Lice Information for Parents

Anyone can get head lice. It has nothing to do with clean or dirty hair, or the cleanliness of your home. Head

lice do not spread disease but can cause a lot of frustration.

You may notice signs that your child might have head lice such as itching, complaining of a tickling feeling in

the hair or sores on the scalp due to scratching.

Or, you may get a call from school letting you know that your child has been checked and has head lice.

How to Check for Head Lice

Lice are tiny grey/brown insects that crawl quickly but cannot jump or fly. Finding them can

be difficult, and you might only find eggs glued to the hair shaft.

Use a bright light and look for lice at forehead, crown, around ears, and nape of the neck.

The best way to check for head lice is to look for them in hair that has been soaked with

conditioner. If there are head lice, the conditioner will slow them down making them easier to

find. This is called the wet combing method.

    If you find lice:

Check all the people that live in your house, including yourself

Tell those that have been in contact with your child such as relatives and babysitters so that they can be checked for lice

Inform the school so that classmates can be checked

    Treatment Options

1 Only treat those who have live head lice. Everyone in the home with lice needs to be treated at the same

time or the lice will spread back from an untreated person.

2 If you have already used a head lice product in the last few days, speak to your doctor, nurse or pharma-

cist about what to do next.

    Wet Combing

    1. Seat your child near a sink with good lighting. Cover his or her shoulders with a towel.

    2. Soak hair in conditioner and use a wide-tooth comb to untangle hair

    3. Divide hair into small sections. Use hair clips to keep hair in sections

    4. Using a lice comb (available at a pharmacy), place the comb at the scalp and comb through the same section of hair several times

    5. Rinse the comb in the sink and repeat until all hair has been combed Repeat the web combing method every four days for two weeks to break the cycle of head lice.

    Cleaning

Wash clothes, towels, bedding used in the last three days in hot, soapy water. Dry at high temperature for 15 minutes.

Soak combs and brushes in hot, soapy water for 10-20 minutes Clean your home - vacuum carpets, furniture and car seats. Sprays are not necessary.
