District Swimming Carnival A fantastic day was had by all competitors who participated in the Tongarra District Swimming Carnival held last Friday at Albion Park Pool. Thank you to the parents who attended, provided lifts and supported all the competitors from Jamberoo Public School. Well done to Ellie Linsley, Lilli Mawbey, Belle Schofield and Neve Wilkins who will be representing Tongarra at the South Coast Swimming Championships to be held at Dapto Olympic Pool on Wednesday 13th March. Ellie will be participating in the 50m freestyle, 50m back stroke, 50m breaststroke, 200m individual medley and the junior relay. Lilli will be participating in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly and the junior relay. Belle and Neve will represent Tongarra in the junior relay. Well done girls!

Basketball A big congratulations to Jordan Poole who has both been selected to represent Tongarra at the Southern Illawarra Basketball Trials to be held at Beaton Park Sports Stadium on Tuesday 5th March. Jordan will be a fine representative of Jamberoo Public School and we wish him the best of luck for next week.

Parent/Teacher Meetings This year, the school will once again be conducting parent/teacher interviews at the end of Term One. The reason for the change is to allow our teachers the opportunity to share with parents the strengths and areas for improvement of our students at the early stages of the year, rather than when reports go home at the end of Term Two. Parents will be provided with vital information about their child’s learning during the early stage of Semester One, which will assist in developing learning goals for their child and address the steps to achieving them. Also, over the next couple of weeks, students who have individual learning plans (indigenous students) will be meeting with their teacher to discuss their goals for 2019. Parents will also be contacted to contribute their thoughts and ideas to the goal setting process. Our whole school goal is to ensure that all school stake-holders are active contributors to the learning, achievement and growth of our students. Together we are all partners in the learning process.

Bus Safety Bus drivers are seeing an increase in students ignoring repeat driver instruction to not cross in front of buses after alighting. This action is life threatening and falls within the "highly dangerous" behaviour and will result in suspension of the student/s. Please see below links to the current Bus Safety Awareness Brochure and interactive road safety education which outlines requirements for students and parents when boarding and alighting buses, along with road use and parental supervision. https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/downloads/bus-safety-school-students.pdf  https://www.safetytown.com.au/ If your child catches a bus please them of the importance of acting responsibly around buses and whilst using access areas to and from the bus stops. Bus drivers are requesting that parents attend the stop with their child and ensure they are waiting on the correct side of the road when picking students up.

Kiss and Drop The school is fortunate enough to have two kiss and drop zones. The first area is located outside of the school’s office. The second kiss and drop zone is located out the front of the church. Please adhere to the rules of a ‘no parking zone’ at all times. Parents have two minutes to drop off their children in the kiss and drop zones. The two zones are not for long term parking and parents risk a fine if they park for longer than two minutes in the kiss and drop zones.

Stage 3 Camp This year, students from Stage 3 will be travelling to Canberra in Term 4. The camp is from the 30th October – 1st November and is a fantastic opportunity for the students to enjoy a unique extracurricular learning experience, visiting places such as Parliament House, Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), National Museum of Australia, the National War Memorial, Telstra Tower and Questacon. The cost of the excursion is $365. A note was sent home last week on Care Monkey outlining the dates for payments. If you require any financial support or assistance with the cost of the camp, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Chook Roster If you are listed on the chook roster, and require access to the school, a gate key has been left at Freddos IGA for you to access the newly installed security gates.

Tongarra District Swimming Carnival What a fabulous day was had at the Tongarra Swimming Carnival last Friday. Congratulations to each of our 26 swimmers who gave it their all - both in the pool and offering support to their team-mates. There were some incredible individual and team performances seen by our Jamberoo squad, in fact some of our most successful results in recent years. The certificates and announcements of those moving through to the regional carnival will be made tomorrow at assembly. Special thanks to Jodie Linsley for her assistance managing the team, Mrs Ruming and Mrs Milligan who capably helped me with the organisational roles on the day, and to all the parents that transported and stayed to cheer on the Jamberoo squad.

Student Representative Council 2019 The SRC votes have been cast and some fine representatives elected to each of the classes. Each class has two representatives and a reserve. These students will be inducted in to their important role at tomorrow’s assembly.

Mathletics A reminder that Mathletics payments of $16 per student are due now.

Dragon Boating The boat is all but full and raring to go! We have just one spot vacant on the JPS dragonboat entry for the Shellharbour Festival of Sport next Saturday. If you would like to join in the fun, please see Sharon Behl-Shanks ASAP. All you need is a sense of timing and team spirit, willingness to get wet, ability to paddle for approximately 1 minute about 5 times throughout the day. We provide the uniform and training. Speaking of training, a reminder that the dragon-boat crew will be meeting at 3.45 next Friday 8th at the Yacht Club (Berkley) side of Lake Illawarra. Could anyone who has not yet paid the $25 entry fee, please pay Sharon. The sign in sheet will be at this training event. Anyone unable to attend the training session should contact Sharon to arrange an alternate time to register. The schedule of events should be released early next week.

SAVE THE DATE The only thing we now need is your support! We would love as many students, staff and families as possible to line the jetty and cheer the JPS dragonboat home. If you can come down to the Oak Flats ski-ramp sometime next Saturday morning, we would really love to see you. There are food stalls and a festive feel to the day … not to mention some outstanding action on the water.

P&C AGM and General Meeting Week 4 Our first meeting of the year was an absolute cracker! Thanks to the unprecedented number of new and less new parents that rocked up to see how they can lend a hand with this year’s efforts! Our annual election was held, including the filling of a secondary Vice President position. President: Hana Papesch-Rogers Vice-President: Janine Wilkins Vice-President: Kendall Thompson Treasurer: Kris Harris Secretary: Rebecca Binks It’s been a long while since we’ve seen these positions without some of the P&C’s Superstars Naomi Poole & Jackie Hall who have assured me they won’t leave us all to panic our way through 2019 and will be continuing to drive our Outdoor Learning Classroom initiative that will be completed early this year. A big THANKYOU to these wonderful ladies who have devoted so much time and effort to our school and our kids. During our general meeting the committee voted to donate $12,000 toward all the lovely new screens in our classrooms. This was a major contribution and represents hundreds of hours of work and donations from many, many parents over the last few years. Thank you for your support in enabling us to contribute to hugely necessary resources such as these. We discussed our direction for 2019/2020 and have floated ideas for projects under a larger focus on creating an eco-friendly mindset for our kids. The committee hopes to fund and create Green School projects, in conjunction with our teachers and students, as a way of educating our kids in living responsibly with our finite resources and also working toward integrating the staff and student body with some of the P&C’s projects to create a more unified school community. This is especially important as the school becomes larger, maintaining our small school values of community and support is critical. We hope to be ever more inclusive as a P&C and encourage parents to find a way to get involved. Don’t underestimate the effect your contribution may have to the school, as one batch of cookies you bake, or one extra person you enlist for a table at trivia can take the load off for another parent that may be baking 5 batches or is too busy writing letters to businesses about sponsorship to get more people for their table. This year we are encouraging parents to find a ‘Branch’, i.e. hooking up with a parent that goes to regular meetings, and offering that parent support. This means that parents that are unable to commit to meetings or to a whole fundraiser, are still able to offer even a small amount of help or support without the pressure of actively attending a meeting. We will do our best to introduce you to people that you can link up with to become part of a branch! Your support means so much to the school and to the resources we are able to offer our kids!! Our first couple of fundraisers for the year are two BBQ’s run back to back, one on Grandparents Day (22nd March) and one a flagship go at the Voting on Election Day (23rd March) the following day. The lovely Susan Mills will be running these and you can offer her your help personally or send us a message on the P&C Facebook page. Our next meeting is on Wednesday the 20th March @ 7pm and we would LOVE to see you there! We are hoping Mr Speirs will run out of chairs at the next couple of meetings 😁

Remember to pay $15 to the school office or at a meeting to contribute to our insurances which cover our kids at fundraising events if you can at all manage it. We make nowhere near enough to cover this each year so every contribution helps! Here’s to a wonderful 2019!
