TEXT 2002SACHA CRADDOCK

“...the whole philosophical stance of these paintings is one ofrevealing that which is already there, a reconfiguration of theessence of moment with a blast. The fact that the explosionsare suspended within the edge, that they are that descriptionof moment, marks not so much a process of discovery, asthat blast of recognition. Painting can do that."

"As the romantic, even melodramatic tone of his statementsuggests, [these paintings are] shadowed by an acute senseof the need for human contact in the absence of theprogrammatic public use in which artists like Cruz-Diez (oralmost any precursor in the lineage of that internationalconstructivism on which Gili's pictorial idiom is so dependent)could believe. And yet for art, if not for society, desperationmight just be more useful than faith; the artist whose heritageis a failed utopia might be more fortunate that the heir to onethat is still promised hope."

“In opposition to what historicalmodernist painters did, developingtowards a cleaner synthesis, I feel youare building a synthesis of your workretrospectively - in reverse. It would nolonger be the case of “a bomb throwninto a Cruz-Diez” but an explosion thatkeeps occurring within your own work.”

Oliver Kielmayer: You always arrange your paintingsinto a very particular spatial arrangement; also youprefer to put them onto a wall painting or wallpaper, also designed by yourself. Where do you positionyourself in the tradition of expanded painting?

J : For me it's all about the struggle withaime Gilispace; I always have to fight it. The space can havea lot of character but still I have to make it mine; Ihave this urge to make every single corner andevery little detail, window and ceiling part of mywork. Ideally the painting doesn't stop at the end ofthe canvas but goes further into the space, intoarchitecture…

“At the same time as Gio Ponti was coming to Caracas to build hisfirst private commission in the country –the masterpiece of a housecalled Villa Planchart Armando Reverón was at the end of his, productive career leaving his self-built, basic ensemble of. He wasstone and cane structures -called El Castillete to enter the mental, asylum that would see his final days. These paintings from 2012-2013are the result of my attempt to imagine the moment they nearly metin Macuto, and the story was inspired by a chapter in the book “LosIncurables”, by Venezuelan writer and architect Federico Vegas.”

“Kielmayer: iIt s pretty amazing that you stuck toyour very particular way of painting over such along time. Abstract painting was not very hip fora long time, but you seem to be quite immune tofashions and trends.

G : If you take painting seriously, it is a very slowilimedium. It's full of little processes and decisionsthat may look stupid from outside, but you mustgo through them; and this is time consuming.”

“At times when so much is duscussed about thepertinence and the value of the images, when anhiperreproductive banality keeps creating voids in the artworld, curatorial propositions such as this can bring usback to the essence of what an artworks really is:unexplainable amazement, transcendence, discontinuousessence beyond history, order, institutions and canons.
