The Brief To trial and demonstrate a new automatic self-cleaning belt filtration unit as an alternative to primary settlement in a live works situation. Determine solids removal, BOD reduction, and Dry Solids content. Hydraulically tested over a range of flows and loads to simulate its operation in a primary treatment process scenario. The Solution The Sobye belt filter is an alternative to conventional primary settlement. The trial showed that Sobye achieved at least equivalent performance in suspended solids and BOD removal to conventional primary settlement producing a more than satisfactory primary treated effluent. The Sobye also achieved a higher dry solids sludge product which had a higher calorific value than normally expected of sludge from settlement processes. This impressive design is delivered with a much- reduced footprint and a significantly reduced investment. The filter takes screened wastewater from an inlet works under gravity or pumped flows and passes it through the 300-micron weave filter belt. A layer of material, (thin cake), builds up on the cloth to increase filtration efficiency, and when the belt requires cleaning, it rotates via a 0.37kw VSD motor so that debris is removed by gravity and the integrated brush. A high-pressure spray bar then cleans the continuous belt on rotation. Consolidated sludge can be discharged to a screw conveyor or launder for transfer or a pressing compactor to achieve a higher dry solids content. The sludge can be readily diluted to be pumped. The cost saving Sobye is renowned for its small-footprint and high filtering capacity, providing rapidly delivered effective treatment with automatic operation. The self-cleaning equipment is, low maintenance, simple to install and easy to retrofit. Sobye has also proved itself to be a temporary treatment solution option. Sobye Trial Unit Testing • Simple Robust Solution • High Performance Primary Settlement Reduction • Average BOD (mg/l) removal 50 - 55% • Average TSS (mg/l) removal 60 - 70% • Average DS content 7 - 8% • Peak hydraulic throughput of 130m3/hr and higher. Typical flow loading between 15 to 40 m3/hr at a solids loading of up to 30-40 kg/hr. Improved sludge quality 0.86 %VS compared to a PST, (0.81% %VS), due to much shorter SRT. The BriefTo trial and demonstrate a new automatic self-cleaning belt filtration unit as an alternative to primary settlement in a live works situation. Determine solids removal, BOD reduction, and Dry Solids content. Hydraulically tested over a range of flows and loads to simulate its operation in a primary treatment process scenario.

The SolutionThe Sobye belt filter is an alternative to conventional primary settlement.

This impressive design is delivered with a much-reduced footprint and a

significantly reduced investment.

The OutcomeThe equipment was tested during a 6 week period over a range of flows/conditions at a test facility on a co-settled, (primary & surplus activated sludge) live site. During the trial the Sobye was operated and monitored independently and achieved the following performance:

This trial has demonstrated the capability of the Sobye unit as a standalone option or as a complement to existing PSTs as a permanent or temporary treatment solution.
