American’s are always in a hurry, so we often microwave dinners

I like steak, which my dad cooks on the grill

My Mom cooks Corned beef with cabbage and potatoes, it takes 3 hours

The Jewish foods I like are brisket, potato pancakes, matzo-ball soup, and blintzes.

In America we are free to practice whatever religion we want

I am Jewish We don’t keep kosher Every year, we light the candles for Chanukah,

and say the prayer, but we also have a tree. We like the smell and tradition.

Some years we have had a seder for Passover Our religious cousins send us presents for

Purim

Manorah Barukh atah Adonai,

Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam asher kidishanu b'mitz'votav v'tzivanu l'had'lik neir shel Chanukah. (Amein)

Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe. Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the lights of Chanukkah. (Amen)

I have a typical American family, both my parents work.

My Mom earns most of the money as a doctor.

Dad is a doctor too, but of the ocean, so he writes papers and keeps the house running

Grand-parents visit, take me on trips, help save for college.

Brother and sister play with me and keep me company, they also bother me.

I was named after my great-great uncle Jack Wexler.

In America, anyone can cry, but boys try to hold it in to look tougher.

I don’t like people in my personal space. My parents are allowed to look through

my room but I don’t like it. In America, people are protected by

laws. The government needs to get a judge to agree before they can invade your privacy or take away your freedom.

America is made up of many different communities. Sometimes people of the same culture live in the same areas.

I live by the beach because I love being a Californian.

I go to school in Seaside because I want to be a part of a multi-cultural community.

All kids get a free education through high-school. People in the military and police wear their rank

on their clothes, but people on the streets have nothing to show their rank in society.

Americans have no kings, every person can become a leader.

Page 12: Jacob's culture

Like most Americans, I prefer to wear jeans and a t-shirt.

For ISM I wear a uniform. We have this rule so that we can focus on school work, not clothes.

Some Americans who are important wear a suit.

American women can wear whatever they want.

Many religions make women cover their hair, Jewish women use a Scheitel

Page 13: Jacob's culture

Many Americans are patriotic. I am a patriot, I love my country because

we are free to be whatever we want and say what we feel.

We have the Constitution which promises the same rights to all Americans.

Some patriotic Americans fight in wars, some join the government, and some just live here and make our country great.

I am an American because my ancestors fled religious persecution.

Werner Bergmann proposes that pogroms be "defined as a 'unilateral, nongovernmental form of collective violence initiated by the majority population against a largely defenseless ethnic group, and occurring when the majority expect the state to provide them with no assistance in overcoming a (perceived) threat from the minority.“

Page 17: Jacob's culture

Zaydbergs -> Zeidbergs Wolf Kleiner left Moldova to escape the

pogroms. In America he became William Klein.

Wolf had to smuggle his sister across border to Austria, because she needed her father or husband to sign a letter to allow her to leave Moldova.

Women were not free 100 years ago. She was shot and died during the escape.
