Mission & PurposeMission & PurposeEstablished in 1986 as a 501(c) (3) private, not-for-profit corporation, the Foundation’s mission is to provide the resources that enhance and enrich the Jacksonville Public Library. Since its inception, The Jacksonville Public Library Foundation has used financial resources to enhance the library facilities; purchase books, computers and materials for children and adults; support the Library’s Center for Adult Learning; and bring thousands together annually for Jacksonville’s premiere book festival, Much Ado About Books. Gifts to the Foundation provide tax benefits to the donors and financially support the library and its vital programs.

Local civic leaders Jack Coleman, Edward Charron and James Moseley founded the Jacksonville Public Library Foundation, Inc. The Jacksonville Public Library Foundation is free from political influence.
The Night of Literary Feasts inception. This fundraiser provided guests the opportunity to dine with best-selling authors. The program ran from 1990-1994 as the major Jacksonville Public Library Foundation fundraiser to benefit the public library until larger campaigns and endowments could be established.
The Night of Literary Feasts became Much Ado About Books, a two-day literary festival in Jacksonville. Proceeds from the events were placed in the Library Board Trust Account (not managed by the JPLF) and spent on library uses.
The Foundation granted $53,000 to the Library Board of Trustees to help meet a $100,000 shortfall in construction funds for the Southeast Branch.
From 1998 to 2000, the JPLF granted $15,000 annually for Library staff training and travel. These funds provided registration, reimbursement, travel and materials expenses for public library staff attending conferences, seminars and continuing education programs in the areas of library science, collections and technology and management. Hundreds of Library staff members benefited from this program. The Foundation received $1.25 million from the estate of Warren Masters to benefit the Library.
The Foundation granted $9,000 to the Library for the design and production of the Ride to Read bus, owned and operated by the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, to benefit children and adult literacy students traveling to any public library.
The Foundation granted more than $700,000 to the Library during 1995-2002. These funds were used primarily for book and computer purchases.
The Foundation launched its capital campaign, “Perfect the Dream,” creating an endowment supporting the long term well being of the Jacksonville Public Library system.
The Foundation granted the Library $25,000 for staff training and travel.
The Foundation granted $2.5 million for enhancements at the new Main Library, a cornerstone of the City’s Better Jacksonville Plan. These enhancements included upgrades to the Children’s Theater, stain wood installed throughout the building, improvements to the conference center creating a world class center for the community, upgrades to lighting fixtures, and upgrades to the “Betsy Lovett Courtyard” including a fountain in the reflective pool.
Grand opening of the new Main Library downtown. The Foundation hosted its inaugural gala Ex Libris which celebrated the Foundation’s 20-year history of success. The proceeds raised from this event went into the Foundation’s endowment fund.
Letter from the ChairLetter from the ChairAs we look back on 2006, it is amazing to see all of the great things the Jacksonville Public Library Foundation has accomplished in its 20-year history. We kicked off the year with a bang at the Foundation’s inaugural gala, Ex Libris, co-chaired by Betsy Lovett and Robin Albaneze. The gala celebrated the
Foundation’s history as well as the opening of the new downtown Main Library which was designed by world renowned architect, Robert Stern. The gala raised $100,000 to support the Foundation’s endowment fund that benefits the Jacksonville Public Library.
Much Ado About Books commenced its 11th year as the city’s premier literary festival. Celebrated keynote author, James Patterson addressed an audience of 1,000 luncheon guests focusing on the importance of literacy, libraries and learning.
The Foundation adopted the Jacksonville Literacy Council as a standing committee. The Literacy Council is composed of local agencies and educational institutions committed to helping adults improve reading skills or learn to read. The Library’s Center for Adult Learning, Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Learn to Read, Inc., the Literacy Pros, Inc. and the Jacksonville Women’s Center form the core of the Council. The Foundation also received funding to create a Literacy Director position providing the support and guidance for the Literacy Council to complete the continuum of literacy services in our community in partnership with the Mayor’s Early Literacy Initiative.
The Foundation also provided funding to the Library’s Center for Adult Learning to host training for the Wilson Reading System, a highly successful twelve step reading program. The Foundation’s financial support enabled local literacy providers to participate in the program with the Center for Adult Learning.
We sincerely appreciate our donors and volunteers for helping us to perfect the dream. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Jacksonville Public Library to create a world class library system for our community.
