Martin (79, 4.09) vs. Shrimp: RHP Max Duval (210, 7.23) Game #100 – Home Game #50 (2127) Last Game: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp catcher Rodrigo Vigil was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to complete a comeback from a 5-1 deficit for a 7-6 win over the Montgomery Biscuits in front of 2,163 at Wear Your Favorite Jersey Night and Half-Price Yuengling Monday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Jacksonville right-hander Nick Neidert retired the first six Biscuits before Montgomery (16-15 second half, 53-48 overall) took the lead in the top of the third inning. Shortstop Jake Cronenworth and designated hitter David Rodriguez hit consecutive singles to right field, and right fielder Nathan Lukes hit a one-out, three-run home run to left field. Montgomery left-hander Matt Krook worked two scoreless innings as the opener, before right-hander Sam McWilliams began the third inning with a 3-0 lead. Jumbo Shrimp right fielder Braxton Lee hit a one-out double and scored on left fielder Brian Miller’s two-out RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1. Biscuits center fielder Thomas Milone hit a one-out solo home run to right field in the top of the fifth inning against Neidert, who allowed four earned runs on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts in five innings. Left-hander Miguel Del Pozo pitched two perfect innings, before right-hander Ryan Newell began the eighth inning and allowed Biscuits first baseman Nate Lowe’s one-out solo home run to make it 5-1. McWilliams retired 13 straight batters before Jacksonville (11-20, 39-60) chased him in the bottom of the eighth inning. Vigil, Lee and Miller each singled, and designated hitter Peter O’Brien’s one-out walk scored a run. Against right-hander Roel Ramirez, first baseman Eric Jagielo drilled his team’s first grand slam of the season to right field for a 6-5 lead. In the ninth inning against Newell, Cronenworth and Rodriguez hit consecutive doubles to tie the game. In the top of the 10th behind left-hander Scott Squier (1-0), third baseman Brian Schales caught a line drive for an inning-ending double play. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Jagielo advanced the automatic baserunner with a groundout. Guerrero was placed on Miami’s disabled list on July 5, retroactive to July 4, with a left lumbar strain. Prior to his injury, Guerrero was 1-2 with a 4.28 ERA in 41 relief outings for the Marlins, with 54 strikeouts in his 40 innings of work. This is the first year for Guerrero in the majors with the Marlins, and he did appear in one game for the San Diego Padres in 2016. That summer he was traded to the Marlins along with Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea in exchange for Jarred Cosart, Carter Capps, Luis Castillo, and Josh Naylor. Guerrero pitched parts of the last two seasons for Jacksonville, going 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA with four saves in 12 outings in 2016. With the Jumbo Shrimp last year, Guerrero was 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 17 relief outings. Guerrero, 27, is a native of Boca Chica, Colombia, and grew up on the small island of Isla Tierra Bomba. Guerrero’s story of going from the island by boat to the only baseball field in the area and then walking two hours through a snake-infested jungle to get back home made headlines this offseason. Guerrero worked a scoreless seventh inning in Saturday’s game at Pensacola. Guerrero is expected to pitch tonight and tomorrow night for the Jumbo Shrimp, then possibly can return to Miami by the end of the week. Harrison and O’Brien Booming Homers: Jacksonville’s Monte Harrison and Peter O’Brien are tied for the Marlins organizational lead in home runs, with each slugger hitting 13 so far in 2018. O’Brien has combined to hit 20 between his time with the Jumbo Shrimp and Double-A Tulsa before his trade to the Marlins. Biscuits in Town: Bring on the Biscuits. This the final of three series between the clubs in 2018. The Jumbo Shrimp won three of five games at Montgomery in mid-May, while the Biscuits swept the Jumbo Shrimp their last visit here from late June to early July in a six-game series. TONIGHT’S  JUMBO  SHRIMP  STARTING  PITCHER  40  –  MAX  DUVAL,  RHP                                2-­10,  7.23  ERA,  17  games  and  13  starts   2018: 2-10, 7.23 ERA (60 ER/74.0 IP) in 17 G and 13 GS. 2018 vs. MTG: 0-2, 11.37 ERA (8 ER/6.1 IP) in 2 G and 2 GS. CAREER: 10-17, 4.63 ERA (99 ER/192.1 IP) in 38 G and 31 GS. CAREER vs. MTG: Same. LAST START: Duval suffered a loss in his start on Thursday July 19 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Duval worked five innings where he allowed five runs (all earned) on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts and allowed two home runs as Jacksonville lost 6-5.

SHUCKERS LOSS: Duval took a loss in his start on Friday July 13 against the Biloxi Shuckers at the Baseball Grounds. Duval worked five and two-third innings where he allowed seven runs on eight hits with a walk, three strikeouts, and he allowed a season-high four home runs as Jacksonville lost 8-6.

BACK AND FORTH: Duval continues to shift back and forth between the starting rotation and the bullpen. Duval recently was in Jacksonville’s bullpen, going 0-2 with a 15.95 ERA in his four relief outings. Duval’s first eight outings this season were starts in Jacksonville’s rotation, going 1-5 with a 6.42 ERA, striking out 38 batters in his 40 and two-thirds innings of work. Jacksonville was 2-6 in those starts. Overall as a starter Duval is 2-8 with a 6.28 ERA in his 13 starts.

MINOR LEAGUE CAMPING PROJECT: During this past offseason, Duval lived in an RV given to him by his mom to use as a home, he was trying to avoid signing a lease for the offseason. Duval lived in the RV with his friend and trainer Kevin Mixon, with the 29-foot motorhome parked just outside of Salinas, California and near their training facility. The RV did not have a shower or toilet, but found ways to make it doable. Duval detailed his offseason in the RV with a blog “The Minor League Offseason Camping Project” which can be found online at minorleaguecampingproject.wordpress.com., and he has continued blogging into the 2018 season, giving insights on his experience as a Jumbo Shrimp pitcher.

Signed by the Marlins as a minor league free agent on July 28, 2017. 2017 Highlights: Started the season pitching for the Evansville Otters in the independent Frontier League. With Evansville, Duval went 8-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 14 starts, striking out 113 batters in 87 innings of work and he won the 2017 Frontier League Brian Tollberg Award for Most Valuable Pitcher, and he was also a Frontier League All-Star. After he signed with the Marlins on July 28, he went 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in six starts for the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. Came within two outs of a seven inning perfect game on August 9, 2017. He retired the first 19 batters he faced before ultimately allowing a run on two hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game win. 2016 Highlights: Started the season pitching for the Evansville Otters in the independent Frontier League, where he was 4-1 with a 4.40 ERA in seven starts. Signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a minor league free agent on June 23, 2016. Pitched at four different levels of the Diamondbacks organization, making one relief outing with High-A Visalia where he was 1-0 with a 9.64 ERA, going 2-6 with a 3.02 ERA in 10 starts for the Single-A Kane County Cougars, then with Short Season Class A Hillsboro had no wins or losses and a 7.36 ERA in two appearances and one start, then also two appearances and a start for the AZL Diamondbacks, going 1-1 with a 1.13 ERA in two appearances and one start. All of his moving around different affiliates mainly happened in a 14-day span in late June and early July. 2015 Highlights: Split the season pitching in the Frontier League, making four appearances with the Shaumberg Boomers where he had no wins or losses and a 13.50 ERA. He also pithed for the Frontier Greys, where he was 1-3 with a 3.51 ERA in 15 appearances and eight starts. The Greys were a team that played strictly road games in the Frontier League, hence the name Greys after the traditional road jersey color. 2014 Highlights: Duval made his professional baseball debut pitching for the Schaumburg Boomers in the independent Frontier League, with no wins or losses and a 6.75 ERA in three relief outings. College: Started college career at Cuesta College before transferring to Hawaii for his junior season. At Hawaii in 2012 he hit .186 with one home run and 18 RBI as an infielder. At the plate in 2013, Duval hit .192 with no homers and 3 RBI. He also pitched that season, with no wins or losses and a 6.48 ERA in six games in relief. After college considered quitting baseball but mom encouraged him to keep playing, which landed him in independent baseball to give pitching a real chance. Personal: During this past offseason, Duval lived in an RV given to him by his mom to use as a home, he was trying to avoid signing a lease for the offseason. Duval lived in the RV with his friend and trainer Kevin Mixon, with the 29-foot motorhome parked just outside of Salinas, California and near their training facility. The RV did not have a shower or toilet, but found ways to make it doable.
