In School This Week

Year 10 Students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award are taking after school yoga classes each week. Some students are taking yoga for their physical section of the award and some are using the classes for their skills section. They must complete a minimum of 3 months of their chosen activity. Congratulations to George Brand 11S1 who has received a volunteers award for the work he has been doing at TAG youth group for disabled young people. George started volunteering on a Friday evening at TAG for his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, but decided to carry on after he had completed the required six months—he still goes along every Friday night. George was presented with the award by Rosemary Watt-Wyness who is the Chief Executive of London Youth. The Mayor of Richmond was in attendance. TAG Youth Club aims to empower and optimise the potential of young people who have a disability between the ages of 15 and 25 who either live, learn or earn in Kingston or Richmond. The group would welcome new volunteers who are looking to gain relevant experience for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

All Years received a special assembly presented by Dr Hui, one of our staff who is a marine biologist by training. He was inspired to present this special assembly after student Ava Russell created a poster concerning the health of our seas.

Sporting Success

On Saturday 18 November a number of Teddington School students participated in the Teddington

Head, a rowing race along the Thames. The students, some of whom were introduced to rowing

though after school sessions provided by Walbrook, are members of Kingston and Walbrook Rowing

clubs. This 5km race is a time trial and competitors race from the golden gates at Hampton Court back

to Stevens Ait, one of the islands between Kingston and Teddington Lock. Olivia and Anna Lisa Janss

Lafond competed in the J14 category and recorded the second fastest women's boat time of the

day. Year 10 students Bella Bridge and Alice Fraser won their WJ15 category event. Year 12 student

Joe Keers won his J18 category race and Evie Moffat also won in the women’s novice category.

On Thursday 23 November the under 14 girls football team played the next leg of the National Cup

against Esher Church High School. Unfortunately this is where our hope of winning the nation Cup

came to an end. We were playing 11 a side however we only had a 10 player team. As we kicked off

we knew they were all Year 9s but we were not put off by this! We played our absolute best, making

good passes and moving into space. Even though we were all playing really well, they managed to

score. Although they were 1-0 up, we were determined to our absolute best. During the first half we

had conceded two goals. Before the second half we changed positions, including the goalkeeper. We

carried on playing our best, keeping the ball close to our feet and making skilful moves. Sadly the other

team still managed to score another three goals. The final whistle blew and we shook the other teams

hands. Even though we lost we were happy with our performance, having played with younger players

and a man down.

News from the Sixth Form

Year 12 Unifrog Session On Wednesday 22 November during enrichment, Kim from Unifrog came to launch their platform for post 19 education to our Year 12 students. This has been used by Teddington Sixth Form for three years now and has had a very positive effect on the way our young people determine their future. The Unifrog approach believes that destinations—where students end up after school – is even more important than their academic performance. They help us to support our students to progress into the best opportunity for them. The Unifrog platform allows students to explore their interests, then find and apply for their best next step. This is not only exploring University, this is also suits those interested in pursuing apprenticeships and it helps explain the different opportunities and levels that employers may be looking for. ―It relieved a lot of stress by showing me how many universities don’t require an AAA, some entry requirements ask for a CDD. This has helped me become determined and ambitious and I know I can achieve this. Taylor Meehan ―Unifrog has made me a lot less stressed about university entry requirements as they are not as high as I may have anticipated. However, it gives me confidence in my chosen area and I now hope to consider aspirational universities too‖. Lara Thornton The afternoon was a great success and we were able to track that 98.2% of students had used the process during the seminar and 73% were also using it after or during the evening following the session. We look forward to our how the Year 12 students will explore new avenues and will keep you informed to how we progress. Year 12 and Year 13 Thank you to all those who attended the consultation evening on Wednesday 22 November and for your feedback. It was a great evening which was really purposeful for all students.
