disCoVeriNg of the ore MouNtaiNs

the spa town of Jáchymov lies in the western part of the Czech republic near the border with germany. it is nestled in a picturesque valley below the highest peak of the ore Mountains, Klínovec (1244 m). it thus forms an imaginary gateway to the western part of the region of the ore Mountains that has been enticing many with its wealth of natural resources for many ages. due to the mining of silver and its subsequent processing, sankt Joachimstahl (as it was known then) became one of the most important towns in europe towards the end of the Middle ages. the silver tolar minted in the local mint inspired first settlers coming to the New World to name their currency, i.e. the American dollar. following the decline of silver mining in the late 17th century, the town experienced a new economic boom with the mining of uranium in the end of the 19th century. through their research of the radioactivity of uraninite ele-ments, Marie Curie-sklodowska and her husband pierre Curie laid the foundations for their exploitation in balneology. The world‘s first radon spa was founded in Jáchymov in 1906. Thanks to the concentration of radon in the water, it continues to be the most effective radon spa in the world to this date.

As Jáchymov Spa and Luhačovice Spa belong to the largest spa group in the country, we briefly introduce the largest spa in Moravia and its offer at the end of this pricelist. located at the opposite ends of the country, both spas have been improving the health of spa guests for more than a century with the aid of their rare natural resources. Jáchymov spa offers unique treatment of the musculoskeletal system in the beautiful ambience of the Ore Mountains. Luhačovice Spa offers well-proven treatment of the respiratory system in the ambience of a picturesque valley with promenades and spa buildings designed by acclaimed archi-tect Dušan Jurkovič. Together, our spas offer spa treatment for the widest spectrum of diseases with more than 2,000 beds for adults and 200 beds for children.

THE BIGGEST SPA GROUP OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC

the quintessence of the treatment of diseases of the locomotive sys-tem in Jáchymov are baths in radon-rich water. radon, radon-222 isotope respectively, is a chemically inert gas that rises from the depths of the ore Mountains and dissolves in underground springs. it is a source of soft ionising alpha radiation. during a radon bath, the surface of the body is exposed to an energy shower of radon alpha particles. the alpha particles trigger a chain of physiological reactions, which soothe pain, improve joint movement, blood cir-culation and healing, stimulate regeneration processes in the tissue of locomotive organs, harmonize vegetative functions, positively affect blood pressure, and they boost the immune system of the body. the penetration of radon into blood circulation is negligible and its biological half-life (elimination of radon from the body) is 20 minutes (i.e. the duration of the radon bath).

a radon bath helps blood supply to the bones and joints, alleviates ailments of the spine and joints, works as an antiarthritic means without side effects and can reduce pain for up to 8 - 10 months after treatment. radon helps after injuries and operations and peo-ple with diabetes and gout. for many clients with rheumatism or bechterew disease, treatment with radon provides indescribable assistance. a radon treatment can be utilized as part of a three-day programme provided by the Jáchymov spa facilities, and always begins with a consultation a doctor. individual baths can be taken on an out-patient basis. a condition of successful reaction on the part of the organism is a minimum of 10 baths.

How is a bath prepared? Radon water with a temperature of 35 - 37˚C and (for the treatment ideal) radon concentration 4-5 kBq/l is released into the bath from below. this unusual method, remini-scent of the emergence of white water, prevents the escape of ra-don into the air, as would take place were it released through a tap. then you simply step in and let the bath do its work.

Spas are founded at locations where natural curative resour-ces are present or where the climatic conditions are suitable for providing spa treatment. A specific curative resource may be found at all spas, with the exception of climatic spas. Natural curative resources include peloids or thermal and mineral waters. The latter are further divided based on their composition and effects and radon mineral water falls within this category as well. Radon concentrations in resources used for treatment at other spas around the world range from 0.5 to 2 kBq/l.in comparison, the concentration of radon in Jáchymov is between 4.5 and 5.5 kbq/l, which is more than double and the same applies to the effects of the treatment. Thus, Jáchymov‘s firsts are not a mere matter of history.

Radon water significantly improves the mobility of the joints, has an antiarthritic effect, improves the immunity of the organism, improves blood supply, operates on cellular chemical processes, stimulates re-pair mechanisms in the core of cells, and thus reduces the need for analgesics or other medicines. In most cases the effect, even in the case of chronic illnesses, lasts longer than six months. And above all, the treatment is very suitable for older patients.

In general, radon therapy is very delicate, does not burden the or-ganism in terms of thermal or in terms of circulatory or acid-base balance. It is also suitable for post-operative and post-traumatic con-ditions which require intensive healing and regeneration of damaged tissues, such as total joint replacements, operations of the spine and areal scars resulting from burns. Diseases of peripheral vessels, such as vaso-neurosis, ischaemic disorders when suffering from atherosc-lerosis of limb arteries, conditions after vein inflammation or rheu-matic vascullitis, respond well, too.

A dominant in the slope above the valley of Jáchymov, the extensive spa hotel offers a marvellous view of the surrounding countryside. It has become a popular place sought by many visitors for its spaciousness, airiness and the breathtaking views of the Ore Mountains from its terraces and balconies. In the summer months, the hotel guests may relax on the spacious sun terrace with sunbeds.

The Jitřenka and Dalibor villas are dependen-cies of the Běhounek Spa Hotel, with which they are interconnected by a roofed corridor. To their guests, the villas offer privacy while providing access to the necessary services and amenities of a large hotel. ACTIVE HOLIDAY IN THE ORE MOUNTAINS

The Ore Mountains are a popular destination of winter sports lovers from around the country, as well as abroad. The Klínovec Ski Area is the largest ski resort in the Ore Mountains and it ranks among the most modern and top class ski destinations in the Czech Republic. Along with the Fichtelberg Ski Area, Klínovec currently offers 33 ki-lometres of excellently maintained ski runs of all difficulties, which are serviced by 1 cabin cableway, 6 chair lifts, and 10 ski lifts. The offer for skiers was significantly extended with the building of a spa-cious red ski run leading along the southern slopes of Klínovec to Jáchymov. The Jáchymov ski run is now 100 metres wide, and with the length of 3 kilometres and a drop of 500 metres, it provides a truly luxurious skiing experience. It is served by a 4-chair ski lift with an orange bubble. The Klínovec Ski Area offers all the necessary background facilities and services, such as ski rentals, ski schools, ski bars, restaurants, and aprés ski tents. In addition to top quality skiing conditions, visitors coming to the region may look forward to other leisure and recreational activities and facilities, such as a snow park with professional shapers, 100km of well-maintained cross-country skiing routes, and a bobsleigh track.
