    President

Presidents MessageI had many conversations with a wide array of business people in the last quarter of 2009. The general tenor was

that no one was sorry to see the year come to a close. 2009 was a very rough year for our country and our region.

But the other side of the conversation seemed to be one of cautious optimism for 2010. Right now, we are

working with several area manufacturing firms that believe they will be increasing business in this new year.

While no one is talking about major job growth, all of them are talking about some incremental increase in

employment. Taken collectively though, there will be some good job opportunities for area residents by

mid-spring, assuming the economy nationally continues to recover.

Retail, in general, depends greatly on the holiday season. While the December sales numbers are not final as

of this writing, the conversational feedback from many of our area stores is pretty positive. While perhaps not

records, sales at least are better than anticipated. Some of the regional/national retailers indicated the Joplin

market is very strong in comparison with their other locations.

The statistics indicate that the Joplin metro area is in recovery. The Moodys Adversity Index shows that Joplin (and Missouri) emerged

from recession in August and continued in recovery through November, the last posted month. Unemployment dropped from 8.6% mid

summer, to just under 8%, although it is likely to bounce back up early this year as the post-holiday layoffs occur. Housing prices remai

stable, although new housing starts have yet to rebound.

As this new year starts, though, it is important for businesses to take advantage of the many resources available to help them be successfu

For example, there is a variety of demographic and consumer expenditure information at www.joplinregionalbizcenter.com.

On the site is general demographic and consumer information for key communities and counties in the Joplin region. However, you can

request, at no charge, specific location information. Available is demographic and/or consumer expenditure information specific to your

location. For example, if you want to know household income in a five mile drive-time from your store, we can do that. If you want to

know the top census tracts for buying shoes, or wine, or jewelry, etc. in the region so you can target advertising dollars, that is available.

All you need to do is request the information on the website form and it will be e-mailed back to you in a day.

From a business to business perspective, we have added a new D&B service. For example, if you want to market paper goods to every

restaurant and food service in the area, we can define those by standard NAICS codes and give you a list, as well as a map showing

locations. For that service, you can contact

    Lea at the Chamber.

Dont forget either, that the Small Business

    and Technology Development Center has

a wealth of information and one-on-one

counseling services to help your firm. The

services are free and confidential. Another

great resource is just the old-fashioned

networking with your peers. You can do

that at Chamber events and through the new

BNI groups forming in the area. For more

information, call the Chamber and talk with

Ginger LaMar, Stephanie McGrew or Kim

    Lester about the networking opportunities.

Overall, it appears that 2010 will start off

slowly but the economy in this area should

be stronger by mid-year. Businesses that

    aggressively pursue opportunities should

find 2010 to be a good year.

oplinangelnetwork.com, a recently launched web service, provides

ntrepreneurs and equity investors with an avenue to connect and

match needs with resources. The Joplin Angel Network is a member-

ased group of investors who have an interest in investing in early

tage and growth-focused Joplin area companies. These investments

over a broad range of industries, including technology, where there

s potential to build sustainable and successful businesses.

The Joplin Angel Network was founded in cooperation with theoplin Area Chamber of Commerce, the Newman Innovation Center

nd Teeter Capital Partners, LLC and is managed by a Steering

Committee. The steering committee members are: Rob OBrian,

President, Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, Steve Russell,

Director, Newman Innovation Center and Tobias Teeter, Principal,

    Teeter Capital Partners, LLC.

The Joplin Angel Network provides entrepreneurs seeking financial

apital with a direct connection to accredited investors seeking

nvestment opportunities. This is achieved by providing entrepreneurs

with the ability to submit business plans directly to local accredited

nvestors for individual consideration. The Joplin Angel Network

rovides an investment matching service only and provides no advicer recommendations to member angel investors. Applicants and

ngel investor members are responsible for completing their own due

iligence and coming to their own investment conclusions. This web

ervice is appropriate for funding requests within the $50,000 and

    500,000 range.

The Joplin Angel Network was formed because starting and grow

a company often requires external financing. While debt is the

most common form of external financing, not all companies can

be financed by debt alone. In the past, Joplin-based entrepreneurs

seeking capital would pitch their business opportunity to individu

or small groups of investors one at a time. Although the market h

functioned this way for many years, this process is inefficient for

both parties. Entrepreneurs spend valuable time raising capital in

small blocks instead of focusing on their business. Investors rece

numerous unqualified requests for funding, may lack the industry

knowledge to evaluate certain companies and miss out on excelle

companies that are funded outside their network of contacts. The

Joplin Angel Network has been established and designed to bridg

the gap between entrepreneurs and investors.

The Joplin Angel Network makes no warranties or representation

to whether its members are accredited investors as defined. Ther

are some restrictions. You must be accredited as defined (accredi

    investor definition - http://www.sec.gov/answers/accred.htm) in

Securities Act of 1933 (Download the Act at http://www.sec.gov/

    about/laws/sa33.pdf.)

For more information on the Joplin Angel Network, visit

joplinangelnetwork.com or contact Steve Russell at the Joplin

Co-founding publishers LumleyC. McCarn, Frank Tew and O.P. Meloy established The JoplinGlobe on August 9, 1896. Thenews story of the day was thepresidential campaign featuringWilliams Jennings Bryan againstWilliam McKinley. At the timethe Globe backed Bryan, the

Democratic nominee, which became protable to the newspaper sinceJoplin was predominantly a Democratic city.

James F. Farrar was the rst circulation manager. He hand-deliveredthe morning paper from a sack across the back of his horse. The rstsubscriber of record was Jesse F. Osborne. As an efcient attorneyand strong Democrat, Osborne would later make history as a ve-timemayor of Joplin.

In 1899, The Joplin Globe Publishing Company was ofcially incor-porated for $5,000. In time, the colorful mining operator, GilbertBarbee, gained controlling interest in the newspaper. The Globewould move to a new two-story brick home at Fourth and Virginiaunder Barbees leadership.

In 1910, Alfred H. Rogers purchased the controlling interest inpaper. By 1918, the Globe already hiring over 60 employeesexpanded further by purchasing the old Y.M.C.A. building nexOne year later the Globe bought out the evening paper known Joplin News Herald.

To separate the two writing staffs in the newsroom, a rail fenceremoved) was built through the spacious former Y gymnasiuThis gave rise to a standing joke among readers, who said thepublishing company was Democratic in the morning and Repin the evening as they operated on different sides of the fenc

Today the Globes mission is to be an essential part of peoplelives by providing valuable information on whats happening iworld. For the past 114 years The Joplin Globe has documentdaily the history of area. Since 1946, the Globe has been an acmember of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Home Pro Presents2008 - 2009 FocusOn You! Grand Prize Winner

At the 2009 JACC Annual Banquet last April, I was greatly surprised to nd out I was the Grand Prize Winner of the FocusOnYou! Program. By attending several of the great events and bei

tries into the Grand Prize drawing. They also have monthly pri

though I attend as many Chamber events as I can manage, I nev

very big backyard. But, John Tullis with Home Pro, came to m

happen". So, between the two of us, we sketched out a plan for

a new Sunscape Sunroom, white vinyl picket fence and also a

beautiful new deck with white vinyl railing. And, lo and beholdNovember, Home Pro made my wish list come true! The sunro

is gorgeous, the new fencing and deck railing makes everything

session on December 9th. Divided into groups and asked to come

up with a budget to include housing, transportation, food, clothing

entertainment and TAXES while breaking even was a daunting

challenge for these high school seniors. To add to the workload, th

course (while very different) were actual ideas presented by golf co

architects to developers of a resort in the Grand Cayman Islands.

Presentations were also made to the students on marketing by Kirs

Smith, Communications Director, JACC and cultural affairs by Ki

Lester, Vice President ,JACC. During lunch, Rob OBrian, Presid
