We did it again! It is always impressive to see what happens when teachers, volunteers and donors intersect. Thanks to you, we exceeded our goals and increased the number of youth we reach, providing greater opportunities than ever for youth to learn business and financial literacy skills. Doubling our numbers and reaching 60,000 JA students by 2020 is well within our reach!

Across the province, we hear from the business community that young people are embarking on post-secondary education without business, workforce readiness or financial literacy skills. This is where we come in. Junior Achievement (JA) fills this gap and complements the current school curriculum with the goal to prepare students to work in today’s global economy.

How do we do it? Innovation. Innovation is driving our economy and being technology-savvy is one of the major keys to fostering innovation. To this end, JA Canada has a new digital strategy and we had a peek at some of the components this past year with the enhanced Titan Business Challenge, and a new app for Economics for Success.

As part of this digital strategy, we will be launching our revamped programs in early 2015. JA’s Business Basics, Economics for Success, Dollars with Sense and Investment Strategies Program are being refreshed to include more digital learning tools so that youth are able to learn using the media of their generation.

We’re very excited about our successful expansion into new regions and rural communities. We introduced our first JA Company Program in Fort St. John, delivered multiple programs in Haida Gwaii, increased program numbers in the Fraser Valley, and hosted multi-class special delivery events for students in rural areas.

Our students also had great successes! Around the province, they made headlines for their innovative ideas, went after their own media opportunities, won awards and scholarships and even took home a few prestigious national awards including the Deloitte Inspiration Award and the Richard Ivey School of Business & Entrepreneurship Institute Scholarship.

One of our biggest successes this past year was the inaugural JABC Innovation Jam. This one-day business challenge brought together 120 students from 20 schools across BC for a day of creative thinking and competition. The workshop and competition challenged and inspired grade 11 and 12 students to THINK BIG about creating the innovative businesses of tomorrow. You can view the student pitches and event highlights on our YouTube channel.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and excellent fiscal management, JABC maintains a strong balance sheet. This past year, a portion of our reserve was invested back into our programs. This will provide a platform for growth and support the goal of doubling the number of students we reach by 2020.

To close, thank you to all of our teachers, volunteers, donors, alumni, staff and directors for contributing to our success. You are all truly amazing. It is the support and dedication of our partners that allow JA to continue to prepare the next generation of business and community leaders of our incredible province.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

British Columbia’s and Canada’s future success depends on the youth of today. Junior Achievement is providing our youth with leadership and problem-solving skills to prepare them for the workforce. Our programs encourage students to take a closer look at the advantages of staying in school and how the choices they make can positively impact their future dreams, aspirations and outcomes. Achievers learn to take responsibility and cultivate values and attitudes that inspire performance throughout their careers.

Junior Achievement produces graduates who are more likely to become entrepreneurs, create jobs and power our economy. By collaborating with professional volunteer consultants to design, organize and operate a real business, students experience how a small enterprise functions. Through our programs, students are developing the core business skills necessary to be successful, creative and innovative leaders, who go on to launch thousands of new businesses each year.

Junior Achievers are more financially literate and tend to save more and borrow less than the average Canadian. We help cultivate habits and knowledge through programs which put financial literacy concepts into practice. By connecting basic economics to their daily lives, our youth develop the habits and understanding to make sound financial decisions in their careers and in life.

Program Focus

Junior Achievement of British Columbia has been providing free business education for BC youth since 1955 by enlisting the services of 800 volunteers each year from business communities around the province. They take time out of their busy schedules to pass along their experiences and passion for business to our youth.

ReYOUvenate, a student company in the JA Company Program, was awarded the Digital Marketing Award, one of the categories of the CIBC Student Company Awards. They sold specialty spa products aimed at creating a complete spa day at home.

Cariboo Cookies , a JA Company Program team from Lake City Secondary School, Williams Lake Campus, won the first-ever Ledcor Group Rural Company of the Year award for their business which sold gourmet fortune cookies.

Just Jars was named the CIBC Student Company of the Year for their innovative product and superb company management. Just Jars sold jars of dry ingredients to which the user adds wet ingredients to make a complete meal.

These grade 5 students from Highlands Elementary School participated in the JA Our Business World program and sold homemade silly putty at a school event.

INAUGURAL JABC INNOVATION JAMThe first-ever JABC Innovation Jam, with presenting sponsor, Chartered Professional Accountants, took place on January 20, 2014 and brought together 120 students from 20 schools across BC for a day of creative thinking and competition. The workshop and competition challenged and inspired grade 11 and 12 students to think about business, entrepreneurship and innovation.

During a guided workshop, student teams developed pitches for their new business ideas to present to panels of experts which included several members of Business in Vancouver’s Forty Under 40. From the 20 teams, four finalists were selected to move on to a final round of judging. The winning team hailed from Sa-Hali Secondary School in Kamloops. They also won the People’s Choice Distinction by generating the most votes during the social media campaign.

A number of special guests and supporters attended the JABC Innovation Jam, adding to the excitement for the students. Miyoung Lee of CBC News Vancouver emceed the opening reception where students had a chance to meet and network before the competition. On competition day special guests, including the Honourable Naomi Yamamoto, BC Minister of State for Small Business, addressed the young audience with words of wisdom and encouragement.

Special Events

CELEBRATE JA!The 2014 Celebrate JA! Student Awards and Donor Recognition event was held June 3rd at the SFU Beedie School of Business and attracted over 200 guests, including students, donors, volunteers, educators, and alumni. This event, annually presented by CIBC, honours top students and teams from JABC’s various programs for their outstanding performance, creativity and demonstration of business acumen.

The CIBC Student Company of the Year was awarded to Just Jars from Burnaby South Secondary School. They sold jars of prepared dry ingredients that require the user to simply add wet ingredients to make a full meal. The company involved 29 students in grades 10 through 12, volunteer advisors, JA Alumni, and sponsor teachers. The group reached all of its goals, selling out its entire product line, achieving a 114% return on investment for their shareholders, and donating $500 to two charities.

The Honourable Peter Fassbender, Minister of Education, attended and spoke to the crowd about his own personal experience in education. JABC was also pleased to welcome Jackie Kai Ellis, Owner, Beaucoup Bakery and Café, who delivered the evening’s keynote address.

AMBASSADOR CLUB

JA Ambassador Club members had an opportunity to take a tour of Hootsuite’s headquarters this year. They were also offered a sneak peak of the second campus which opened just a few days before the tour!

Nearly 550,000 students have participated in Junior Achievement of British Columbia’s programs since 1955. The memories and experiences the almuni share capture the very best of JA’s exciting record of success.

The JABC Ambassador Club, launched in 2009, provides JA graduates with additional opportunities aimed at boosting their success. Ambassador Club members are given exclusive invitations to volunteer and attend events, network with the local business community and attend meetings. The Ambassadors also created an Alumni Board which is now in its second year. This executive team meets regularly with the purpose of growing the club and developing events where participants can gather to network with business leaders while gaining valuable skills.

2013-2014 Gala Cabinet How Junior Achievement Dramatically Changed One Person’s Life

No one could blame Kevin Royes for feeling alone and disregarded by the world. Left by his father at a young age, and with his older brothers alternating between jail and group homes after the hospitalization of their mother, young Kevin was in front of a judge three times by the age of eight. He was finally taken away from his mother at the age of nine and sent to a foster home. Lacking a sense of direction or role model, Kevin was left to navigate a life of petty crime and loneliness.

At the age of 16, however, his life began to change when Kevin met an adult volunteer in his high school marketing class who spoke to the students about Junior Achievement. Initially skeptical, Kevin’s interest began to grow as he learned more about the characteristics of an entrepreneur. Recognizing those same qualities within himself, Kevin quickly became inspired and empowered as he participated in a student-led business enterprise.

“Right away I was hooked,” said Kevin. “I was inspired for the first time in my life and my marks took off. Within months I was on my school’s honour roll and shortly after I started my first little entrepreneurial enterprise.”

By the age of 18, Kevin’s path was set as he started a fencing and deck-building business. By age 21, Kevin’s business interests grew to include a snow-boarding invention and by the age of 25, he employed more than 30 employees and owned a factory of his own. Kevin’s creativity expanded and he invented the Kelvin 23—a multi-purpose, all-in-one hand tool which became wildly popular and took Kevin to his next lifetime milestone, an appearance on the hit reality show, Dragon’s Den, where he recorded one of the most unique episodes in the show’s history. Pitching his invention to the show’s panel was nerve-wracking but rewarding. As Kevin says, “It was the most incredible experience…one that left me in tears.” Soon after his TV appearance, Kevin landed his tool invention in Home Depot, Canadian Tire and the pages of the Oprah Magazine before inking a lucrative licensing deal with a Toronto marketing firm.

For Kevin, Junior Achievement was a transformative experience. “It changed my life. It saved my life. If that volunteer hadn’t walked into my class, I can’t imagine where my life would have ended up.” Kevin is currently involved with TEDxVancouver, CBC Dragon’s Den and Hootsuite. He is also the founder of The Soulcial-Preneurs Club and shares his experiences with students around Greater Vancouver.
