Romans 8:28-29

We know that in allthings God works forthe good of thosewho love him, whohave been calledaccording to his pur-pose. For those Godforeknew he alsopredestined to beconformed to thelikeness of his Son,

that he might be the firstborn among manybrothers.”

Back in 1921, a missionary couplenamed David and svea flood wentfrom sweden to the heart of africa to

what was then called the Belgian Congo.they met up with another scandinaviancouple, the Erickson’s, and soon they felt ledby the lord to move out of the central mis-sion station and take the gospel to one of themore remote areas of the Congo.

at the village of N’dolera they wererebuffed by the chief, who would not letthem enter his town for fear of alienating thelocal gods. so the two couples decided to gohalf a mile away and build their own huts.

they prayed for a spiritual breakthrough,

but there was none. their only contact withthe villagers was a young boy, who wasallowed to sell those chickens and eggstwice a week.

svea flood a tiny woman only 4 feet, 8inches tall decided that if this boy was theonly african she could talk to, she would tryto lead him to Jesus. and in fact, over a peri-od of time she succeeded.

But there were no other encouragements.Meanwhile, malaria struck one member oftheir little group after another. in time theErickson’s decided they had had enoughsuffering and left for the relative security ofthe central mission station

then, in the middle of this primitivewilderness svea found herself pregnant.when the time came for her to give birth, the village chief softened enough to allow amidwife to help her. a little girl was born, whom they named anna. the delivery, however, was difficult, and svea wasalready weak from malaria. the birthprocess was a heavy blow to her stamina.she lasted only another 17 days

inside David flood, something snapped. He dug a crude grave, buried his 27-year-oldwife, and then took his children back to thecentral mission station. Giving his newborn

daughter to the Erickson’s, he snarled, “i amgoing back to sweden. i have lost my wife, and i obviously cannot take care of thisbaby. God has ruined my life.” with that, heleft, rejecting not only his calling, but GodHimself.

it is true. sometimes tragic things hap-pen, even in the lives of those who seek towalk closest to Him.

Bad things do happen to good people andthat is just where this passage of scripturecomes in to give a message of encourage-ment and hopes to assure us “in all thingsGod works for the good of those who loveHim, who have been called according to Hispurpose.”

and the very next verse tells us what Hispurpose is. it says, “for those God foreknewHe also predestined to be conformed to thelikeness of His son.” amen!

for example, let us look at three specificblessings that come into our lives throughour problems. and as we see how God hasused problems in the past to bring aboutgreat blessings, it will help us in the prob-lems we face today.

God Uses Problems to Direct and shapeUs. the difficult things we experience inlife, big and small, are not random freak

accidents or streaks of bad luck. they areallowed and at times even orchestrated byGod to direct us and to shape us into theimage of Jesus.

the problem is that we cannot see whatHe is doing while it is happening.

all we see are the chips flying. the chis-el’s blow is not evidence that God has left usor is angry with us, but rather that God isright in front of us: eyeing our progress, smoothing the rough edges, patiently bring-ing the image of Jesus out in us.

God Uses Problems to Correct Us.secondly; God can also use problems tocorrect us. sometimes you may be stuck ina rut and God uses problems to change yourdirection in life. it is not that you are doinganything wrong; it’s just that we need a newdirection. amen!

But there are other times when we aredefinitely wrong. we have strayed into sin,and we need God’s correction, His disci-pline, in order to have our fellowshiprestored with Him. so God will use someproblem in our life to stimulate us to thinkabout the sin that we have fallen into and tocorrect your behavior. If you would like to receive the entire message

Born in Dallas, in 1971, as Ericawright, now ErykahBadu attended an artsmagnet school in Dallas. she was work-ing as a teacher and part-time singer inDallas when she opened for D’angelo ata 1994 show. D’angelo’s manager, KedarMassenburg, was impressed with the per-formance and hooked her up with thesinger to record a cover of the MarvinGaye/tammi terrell duet “Preciouslove.” He also signed Badu to his recent-ly formed Kedar Entertainment label, andserved as producer for Baduizm, whichalso starred bassist Ron Carter and mem-bers of hip-hop avatars the Roots on sev-eral tracks.

Badu’s first single, On & On, became anumber one R&B hit in early 1997, andBaduizm followed it to the top of theR&B album charts by March. Openingfor R&B acts as well as rap’s wu-tangClan, Erykah Badu stopped just short ofnumber one on the pop album charts inapril. Her live album followed later inthe year.

in 2000,Badu returned with her highlyanticipated second studio album, Mama’sGun, which was co-produced by Badu,James Poyser, Bilal and Jay Dee and con-tained the hit single, Bag lady.Don Diego is a contemporary jazz

fusion saxophonist, vocalist and keyboardplayer who mix instrumental covers ofmodern and classic R&B with rap andpop vocals. His music is divinely focusedand undoubtedly appeals to the tastes ofsmooth jazz lovers. However, the urbanflavor of Don Diego’s music is unmistak-able. while Kenny G and Davidsandborn will be obvious, one will dis-cover the underlying influences of mod-ern gospel and classic Detroit soul.

in recent years, Diego has recorded withjazz greats Kirk whalum and Geraldalbright. He reached the Billboard chartswith it Never Rains in southernCalifornia on his “Razz” release andspent 26 weeks there. His music has beencovered from various artists from pop to

jazz including R&B superstar group toni!tony! toné! Don has performed withKenny G, George Howard and Najee. Hisversatility was on display when he touredwith Vanilla ice for three years and alsoplayed in B.B. King’s band.

Over the years, Don Diego has createda diverse audio canvas on which he paintshis masterful and culturally delightfulmusical offerings. Don Diego Jazz is allthat. His silky smooth melodies and ener-getic stage presence lights up every venuehe plays, and he always brings the crowdto their feet!

when it comes to naming those mostresponsible for the health and breadth ofthe current Dallas blues scene, R.l.Griffin is one of the first names to cometo mind. He hails from the East texastown of Kilgore, texas. He is often called“the Right Reverend of the Blues” or“ting –a-ling.”Mr. Griffin was the onlyperson in his family who was interested inmusic when he began playing in the bandat C.B.DansbyHigh school. His banddirector, Mr. Rufus B. anderson, was theperson who encouraged him to startsinging. initially a drummer, singingcame about only after he was requested tosing his version of fever by little willieJohn.

Mr. Griffin hit Dallas in 1965 after hereceived a job offer from Big Bo thomasof the Empire Room. from there hiscareer spannedtours in texashonky tonks likel o u a n n ’ s ,Kenneth’s Place, the Red Jacket andthe Climax Club, later owned by thelegendary gunmanJack Ruby. He hada regular gig at theClimax Club intyler for 7 years. He played at theClimax Club from

thursday through saturday and he wouldreturn to Dallas on sunday night.

from working in tyler, Griffin decidedto open his own club. the club was calledthe Blues alley from 1987 to 1993. thename was changed to the BluesPalace, and after moving across the street to abigger, nicer place, the club is now calledthe R.l.’s BluesPalace #2.

Bobby Patterson was born in Dallas, texas, and like many other Dallas–basedblues musicians, he is a vocalist andmulti- instrumentalist who continues thesoul-blues tradition of people like Bobby“Blue” Bland, Otis Redding, and wilsonPickett.

Bobby Patterson has worked all aspectsof the blues record business as a song-writer, producer, promotion man andlabel owner. He began performing whenhe was ten, playing the guitar and thedrums. He formed a band called theRoyal Rockers when he was still in histeens. the Royal Rockers won talentcontests in and around Dallas; and in1957 the band won a talent contest whichled to a trip to California to record a trackfor liberty Records.

the record was never released, butwhile attending arlington College, he meta classmate who was the son of a localrecord company owner and in 1962, herecorded, you Just Got to Understand for

so who will be holding down the fortfor DisD until a permanent superin-tendent is hired? and the winner for

the interim superintendent of Dallasindependent school District is alan King, following the resignation of Dr. MichaelHinojosa. as you may know by now, Hinojosa has

accepted the position of superintendent inCobb County, Georgia near atlanta. Hislast day on the job for DisD will be June30. as DisD says goodbye and farewell toDr. Michael Hinojosa, they welcome inter-im superintendent, alan King.

King is currently the district’s chief finan-cial officer, and will now assumeHinojosa’s job responsibilities. King’sbiggest challenge will be something he’svery familiar with — the school budget —and how to deal with all the cuts that willhave to be made in the coming months.

DisD trustees have named alan King, the district’s chief financial officer, asinterim superintendent on Monday night.

“we have 20,000 hard-working employ-

ees in this district, and i’m going to doeverything i can to help those people suc-ceed at their jobs,” King said. King hasbeen a Certified Public accountant for 33years.

King worked as Deputy superintendentfor 12 years with lewisville isD prior totaking the CfO position with Dallas isD.Before that, he was an assistant superinten-dent in the Goose Creek school District fora decade. “He’s got a stellar record in termsof his impact of leading school systems,”said DisD trustee Mike Morath.

so why does King feel he is more capablein this interim position than the other can-didates?

“i’ve seen a lot during my career. i feellike with my experience and with the staffwe have in the district we should be able toaccomplish everything we need to do,” hesaid.

President angela Davis said she was ini-tially concerned that King didn’t have theproper background for the position, but shethinks he is a good choice because of hisfinancial experience which will help thedistrict with its current budget crisis.

Considering DisD’s past financial strug-

gles, why shouldn’t alan King lead the dis-trict through their current financial crisisand on into the near future?

District officials said King was one ofnearly 15 people considered for the interimposition, but one of the few who didn’thave a background as an educator. so thatmeans he knows the money end of thebusiness, what is he going to do about theeducation part of his job? what is in storefor the children’s education in DisD? Orany other issues DisD will face?

“How can you run a school system if youdon’t have training in the education field?”

asked thomas Muhammad, who opposedKing’s appointment.

while King may have some critics in thecommunity, King managed to receive aunanimous vote of confidence from boardmembers.

“Being the superintendent of DisD is atough job,” said DisD Board Presidentlew Blackburn. “No matter who steps in,we think alan King can handle it for sixmonths while we take time to search for anew superintendent.”the interim positioncomes without a pay raise. Hinojosa’ssalary of more than $235,000 will go backto the district’s budget to be used else-where.

King emphasized that he only wants thisjob for the short term; he will not throw hishat into the ring to be Hinojosa’s perma-nent successor.

“it’s been a great ride,” Hinojosa toldtrustees Monday night. “it’s been the bestjob i’ve ever had. it was difficult at times, but obviously rewarding.” Hinojosa willsoon begin work with the Cobb Countyschools in suburban atlanta.

so now we want to know, where doesDisD go from here?

Reach Out and

Touch

And the Kingshall answerand say unto

them, verily i sayunto, inasmuch thesemy breathen, ye havedone it unto one ofthe coin, if you did

not these things you have also done themunto Jesus.”

Jealousy is the key issue for man toreach out and touch someone else. it’sjust like the songwriter says, “Reach outand touch somebody’s hand, makes this abetter place because you can.” you see, ifwe could do that, the first thing it woulddo is erase jealousy. Jealousy is the keyproblem.

Example: people who know how tomake money, because of social prestigeand feeling threatened by the ones hehelps. you know, now days we don’twant to do anything for anybody.

we want to gather up everything forourselves and forget about everyone else.you know what we say, they are grownlike i am, let them do what i’ve done.well, maybe they can’t do what you do.Maybe they don’t have the know – howlike you do, or maybe they are notequipped with the talents God blessedyou with. you see, Christian has the toolsto reach out and touch others. He has thelikeness of Christ – he has the Holyspirit.

anyone having the power of the Holyspirit has the power to make or bringabout change. if anybody have the toolsto reach out and touch, it is the Christian.if just the Christians would committhemselves to reaching out to others, wewould make a big difference in the drugproblem, in our community, and in oursociety.

if the Christian really wanted to reachout and touch, we would take on min-istries of evangelism, mission and teach-ing. we need to take God’s messageeverywhere; the jailhouses, the streets, and hospitals.

we should set up drug related programsin our churches, and teenage pregnancyprograms in our churches. you see, wehave the tools to reach out and touch, butjust won’t enough of us take uponhim/herself to do it. you see, we justwon’t do things like that. you know whatwe say? i don’t want to get involved.well! we are already involved.

we need to practice what Christ taughtus. Jesus taught us to reach out and touch, that we might make other’s life moremeaningful, and make our surroundings abetter and more productive place to live.

the more lives we touch, the morepeople we can lead to Jesus Christ forthat final touch. Jesus taught us the mean-ing of reaching out to others during Hisministry here on earth. Jesus reached outand touched lives everywhere He went.He didn’t ask, are you a Christian? Or doyou have money? He did not say i don’tthink i ought to get involved. when Jesustouched people’s lives with that onetouch He touched many others. in Matt8:1-4.

He touched a leper and leprosy disap-peared, Matt. 8:5-13, healed a RomanCaptain’s servant. Matt. 8:14-15, Heheals Peter’s mother-in-law. Matt. 8:23-27, Jesus touched his disciples’ unstablespirit. you see, we as laymen should takea lesson from our lord, learning the truemeaning of how vital, and how impera-tive it is to help other people to become abetter and more stable individual.

let us not forget to read our Bibles.May the lord BlEss yOU REal

GOOD, and may He ever keep you in Hisloving care.

young Davidhad a child-liketrust in God.

He’d spent many nightsunder the stars tendinghis sheep. He’d killed alion and a bear to pro-tect his flock. He trustedGod. what wentwrong? when tempta-tion came, David theking could not resist.

Beware when suc-cess comes your wayand everything is just asyou would have it. that

is when satan likes to bring about your fall. Recentlywe’ve had a number of politicians, athletics, moviestars, and ministers whose careers were flawed bytheir immoral and unethical activities. Often peoplewill try to justify these actions by saying somethingwas missing from the marriage, or else this wouldnot have happened. yes sir... plenty was missingfrom the marriage. the betrayer’s commitment totheir spouse, their decency, their conscience, theirmorals, their ethics, and their sense of responsibilityto their family. i’ve seen it happen so many times. aperson will forfeit 100% for the 20% that they thinkthey are missing at home. 100% is greater than 20%any day.

somehow as adults, living in a complicated world,we lose that child-like faith.David saw Bathsheba. was that a sin? i don’t think

so. sin began when he planned to see her. this led todeception and finally to murder. Could this havebeen the man of whom God said, “you have notbeen like my servant David, who kept my com-mandments, and followed me with all his heart, doing only that which was right in my eyes” (1Kings 14:8b)?

David sincerely repented later for his terrible mis-take and surrendered to God (see Ps. 51). God for-gave him and loved him. we have a forgiving Godwho will always care for us if we repent and trulybelieve.

what would entice you to compromise your char-acter, your commitments, or your honesty? yes, Godforgives us and loves us. yes, we have a forgivingGod who loves us, and who will always care for usif we repent and truly believe. and yes... there willbe consequences for our actions.

Most of the time, i allowhim to be the one to dole outthe actual punishments, whether it’s a restriction or aspanking, i let him decidewithout stepping in, even wheni don’t agree. when it’s some-thing i’m getting on myteenage son about, it neverseems to be good enough for my husband.i know i’m more lenient, but i just don’tbelieve every incident warrants a jail sen-tence or a 4 hour lecture. so i tell my sonthis is what happened, this is how i want-ed it corrected, and i give him a timeframe, if needed. No matter what it is, myhusband comes right behind me andthrows something else in. it infuriates meto no end. i tell him that makes me feellike he thinks of me as the lesser parent. He says it’s just operating as a two-parenthousehold. But if it were about operatingas a two-parent household, wouldn’t wecome to a conclusion as one, instead ofhim overriding what i say? How can i

change this dynamic in myhousehold? How can i makemy husband see that my dis-cipline works just as well ashis?

Equal Parenting Opportunity

Dear Equal,

Discuss with your husbandabout how you’re uncom-fortable with him undermin-ing your authority. let him

know that it bothers you and has becomea problem. it’s time to be honest with himabout it. your household needs the onevoice of whichever one of you is issuingthe discipline. so, the two of you mustagree that it is a one voice householdwhere the two of you come together andsupport the discipline that has been ren-dered.

conquering the land he had promised toabraham fell to him.

God made him a promise that Hewould be with him as He had been withMoses, He would not fail him or aban-don him. God is a promise keeper, what-ever he promises He will do. Jesuspromised the church to come again andreceive us unto myself He will keep hispromise.

sunday we celebrated the lord’ssupper, the message was delivered byPastor l.t.Morgan from the subject“Keep your feet clean” John 13:1-17. the focus of the message was the spir-

itual lesson Jesus taught as he washed

the disciple’s feet. Because we practicewashing the saints feet we were blessedto hear the spiritual message in the act.Jesus in preparation to leave the disci-ples and hearing them discussing whowould be the greatest among them, wanted to unite them and teach themtheir need for repentance and the great-ness of servant hood, began to washtheir feet.

Peter objected to him washing his feetand declaring that he would never washhis feet Jesus said “if i don’t wash you”you can’t be part of what i’m doing.

Peter then wanted to be washed allover, but Jesus wanted them to knowthat once they were cleaned by hisblood they did not need a second wash-ing, but because we sometimes sin, weneed repentance, and we are cleanagain.

He was drawing from the Oldtestament Priest who was washed allover once when they took office, buteach time they came to serve they had tostop at the laver and wash their handsand feet so they would not die. thankGod for the Blood!

It is importantthat we preparefor many

things in life, and itis also importantthat we prepare ourhearts for genuinefellowship withGod. when welook into God’sword and see hisglory and grace, this causes us to see

the wretchedness of our own hearts. thisis what happened to isaiah; “then said i,woe is me! for i am undone, because i ama man of unclean lips, and i dwell in themidst of a people of unclean lips” (isaiah6:5). as we need God’s holy word and aparticular verse convicts us, we will wantto come to the lord in repentance andconfession. we will need to confess ourspecific sins, naming them before him.But we can take comfort in the fact that“if we confess our sins. He is faithful andjust to forgive us our sins, and to cleanseus from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

one athletics? were athletics in theNCaa designed to just builddorms, and add to the physicalstructure of these schools?

in an attempt to right some seri-ous injustices several groups have come up with plans topay athletes; and they should. the largest facility on everymajor campus in this country is the football stadium.Other than food and physical up keep none of the revenueis spent on the athletes.

the University of texas made upwards of $83 Millionon football alone last year. there is no one person, place,or thing responsible for that much financial support . theNfl is on strike right now trying to figure out how to split$9 billion. the key word is split. the NCaa doesn’t wantto split anything.

in every college town in america everybody in townmakes money on game day, with the exception of the ath-lete. Hotels, traffic cops, car thieves, parking attendants, everybody but the athlete, and if he makes a couple buckson the cool, then, it’s a violation. why are these young peo-ple held to a higher standards than those academic scholar-ship students? they can’t receive gifts; they have to watchwho they go to church with; they can’t go to the super -Bowls with the wrong people, etc. Everything i mentionedis un-american.

the Big ten had meetings concerning paying athletes.the sEC had a group of coaches say they would pay themout of their pockets. the NCaa frowns on that. isn’t thathow the Civil war started? working people without paydoesn’t work it’s been tried.

some of the insane logic is… there is no equitable wayto pay them. some say big schools can pay better. someschools have better lodging, better food, etc. you don’t stopfeeding and lodging because texas has more money thantsU. sMU built a football stadium 13 years before theybuilt a library. the intent was to exploit athletes was therefrom the very beginning.Notre Dame might have 24,000 students but their stadium

holds upwards of 95,000 that’s intent, folks!Restricting the students from working is un-american

enough now they’re investigating a young man at Baylor, because his Mother borrowed and supposedly paid backsome money to an ex pro player. this world is run on bor-rowing and paying back money.

young man terrell Pryor Quarterback at the Ohio stateUniversity is under investigation for driving a car. theyhave kids in Junior high driving cars that’s pure racismsome of these kids do have parents! they send kids toCollege with credit cards. anybody can buy a car, anybodybut a football player.this is america, people. there are a few rights that come

with that. let’s get the NCaa, straight before we go toiran.

Little Known Black historyBy Bettye “Katt” Williams

The tunes and the beats of negro spiritualsand Gospel songs are highly influenced by themusic of their actual cultural environment. Itmeans that their styles are continuouslychanging. The very first negro spirituals wereinspired by African music even if the tuneswere not far from those of hymns. Some ofthem, which were called “shouts” were accom-panied with typical dancing including handclapping and foot tapping.

On January 6, 2009, seniorCorporal Norman smith, alongwith several other officers were

attempting to serve a warrant at the resi-dent of Charles Payne, located in the4900 Block of wadsworth Drive, at theOakwood Place apartments in Oak Cliff- an area known for drug use and sales.During this attempt, Corporal smith wasshot and killed. allegedly, smith and other officers went

to Payne’s front door, knocked on it, butdidnot announce who they were beforeattempting to serve an arrest warrant onsomeone in Payne’s home. then DallasPolice Chief David Kunkle said that itwas customary not to announce that youwere police officers, to get suspects tocome to the door.

it was reported that someone in theapartment called 911 about the same timeCorporal smith and the other officerswere outside knocking on the door andreported there were intruders outside.the caller told the dispatcher that two

men had tried to kick in the door and heshot at them.Police said that the men inthe apartment knew officers were at thedoor and were just buying time to flushdrugs down the toilet.

Payne’s attorney is expected to questionhim about the day of the shooting. it isexpected that Payne will try to convincejurors that he thought he was beingrobbed in his Oak Cliff apartment.

On tuesday, June 8, Payne took thestand in his own defense and testified thathe “heard a knock at his door andreceived no answer when he asked whowas outside.”He also stated that,“he gotthe gun from underneath his couch, cracked the door open and someone triedto kick in the door.” Payne said he beganfiring through the door believing thatsomeone was trying to rob him.

Dallas prosecutors will have to provethat Charles Payne fired the shot thatkilled smith and that he knew, before fir-ing his weapon thatpolice officers werestanding outside his apartment door.

the 29 year old Charles Payne nowfaces three charges including capital mur-

der of a public servant. if the jury findsPayne guilty, he faces the death penaltyfor the killing of Officer smith.

No doubt that this is truly a tragedy forboth sides of this situation. However, there are questions that should beanswered before jumping to conclusions. One life has already been lost, so let’s notmake the same mistake twice.

the fact still remains that all the factsand evidence in this case should be heardbefore a decision is made. Everyonedeserves a “fair” trial before being foundinnocent or guilty – including CharlesPayne.

it’s been said by some in that commu-nity that Corporal smith didnot have agood reputation because of the way heconducted business. However, accordingto the Police department, smith had agreat relationship with thecommunity.smith’s was the 79th Dallasofficer killed in the line of duty that year.

if jurors find Payne not guilty of thecapital murder charge, they could stillfind him guilty of lesser charges rangingfrom murder to manslaughter, to crimi-

nally negligent homicide, or they couldfind him not guilty.

Rev. archie alexander, sr. Pastor ofthe wiley Chapel Missionary BaptistChurch, where Payne has been a memberfor several years had this to say, “wewant everybody to keep us in yourprayers, and thank youfor all that youhave done.

at the end of the day, we all know thatGod is in control. we are looking for afavorable outcome for Charles Payne.”

Mistake or Murder? Is Charles Payne telling the truth?
