President’s Message...
Since the last newsletter, we have had a busy schedule. We started with a Tech Session at Black Forest Auto,
which was well attended. Thanks to Mike McKinney for being such a gracious host. Next we had an Autocross
and Defensive Driving class hosted by the Pearsons and Sirnys. Thank you. The event was very informative and
enjoyable, even for those of us that do not drive that fast. The facilities at State Fair Park were quite nice. The
fact they included the cones for the autocross course was great. The third event was the Spring Car Rallye. The
weather did not cooperate, but rallies are always fun. Thanks to Dan Hellenberg and Francesca Abbate.
By the time you read this newsletter we will have teed off at Song Bird Hills for our annual golf outing. As the
saying goes, “ even a bad day at golf is better than any day at work”. It will be a good day and I hope to see
many of you join us.
After golf we have the Masterpiece Auto Show, an excellent event to show off your Mercedes-Benz at a one-day
event. Plus, there are a number of Drive-to-Dine locations scheduled the next couple of months.
As you can see your section continues to offer great events for your participation. Please show your appreciation
by attending some, or all events. Hope to see many of you at these events.

On the beautiful, first day of summer 13
Mercedes-Benzes of all eras & types (and
one BMW, Al's Benz was at home, or so
he said) journeyed from all over the state
to Hereford & HopsHereford & HopsHereford & HopsHereford & Hops in Wausau for a cas-
ual lunch - and much car talk! After two
hours of wonderful conviviality and cama-
raderie the magnificent caravan set out
on the 10 mile drive through the beautiful rural Wisconsin countryside to the home of Karl &
Ruth Middelhauve. Their log home and matching garage were splendid, and their graciousness
in welcoming our group into it could not have been better. However, the true stars of the after-
noon were on the hoods and trunks of the 17 M-
100 engined 600 series Mercedes-Benzes in Karl's
collection, nestled in his custom built combination
garage and storage area.
Karl & Ruth relocated to north-central Wisconsin
from rural Pennsylvania in the fall of '07, and it
took six 26' trucks to move the car collection! And
this isn't just a collection of "lookers" - Karl has
restored, or is in the process of restoring, each and
everyone one of them!
In fact, two of them are being attended to now in
the garage area, while various items from others
are being painted or re-chromed or having their
wood interiors redone. Karl does all the mechanical work himself in his "one man garage."
Needless to say, he has spares galore, including complete engines and transmissions. While
some of the vehicles are in just-out-of-the-factory condition, he has also improved on them with
state of the art computer fuel management systems and newly
designed motor mounts.
Several have had superchargers installed to increase the output
to 600HP! In conjunction with his friend and the designer of the
original 600 style, Paul Bracq, Karl has also built two El Camino
style 600's: EL Benzo & The Benzenino - they must be seen to be
believed! Just to spice up his immaculate garage are a 50's era
open wheeled race car and a BMW motorcycle with sidecar;
along with some nice 300
series M-B’s.
After experiencing the jaw-dropping aspect of all this Mer-
cedes-Benz history, we enjoyed Ruth's delicious home-
made strawberry pie, raspberry torte & Bundt cake at a
table set up right in the garage. Excellent cars and won-
derful people made for a truly great day. Thanks to all
who drove all the miles to get here, and a special thanks
to Karl & Ruth for the 600’s and the hospitality!!!

YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS ARE CURRENTLY PROPOSING SIX (6) ALTERATIONS TO OUR WISCONSIN SEC-TION BY-LAWS. BRIEF EXPLANATIONS OF THE ALTERATIONS ARE GIVEN IN THE ATTACHED INSERT. PLEASE REVIEW THESE PROPOSED ALTERATIONS, OR THE COMPLETE 11-PAGE MBCA WISCONSIN SEC-TION BY-LAW DOCUMENT ON OUR CLUB WEBSITE AT www.mbca-wi.org. YOU WILL BE RECEIVING A BALLOT FOR A VOTE OF APPROVAL or DISAPPROVAL IN THE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER BADGER STAR, or MAY VOTE ONLINE. (PAPER VOTES WILL BE COLLECTED AT THE OCTOBER ANNUAL MEETING.) THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION. Specific questions regarding these proposed alterations may be directed to Phillip Nicholas, Ph. # (262) 960-0211, or via email at [email protected].
By-Law Revisions Proposed
Proposed ALTERATION 1 TO EXPAND THE DEFINITION of the term ASSOCIATE MEMBER TO INCLUDE SIGNIFICANT OTHER or PARTNER, aside from SPOUSE.
Specifically, this change is proposed in the following section of the BY-LAWS:
Article II, Section 2, part C. The Board recommends your vote of approval, or ‘yes’ to this By-Law alteration.
*****************************************
Proposed ALTERATION 2
TO INCLUDE ASSOCIATE MEMBERS in the RIGHTS, PRIVILEGES, and ELECTION PRO CESS OF THE CLUB.
Here, an ASSOCIATE member is defined as a spouse or partner of an ACTIVE member, OR a dependent who is 18 years old or older. In other words, ASSOCIATES are adult family members of the dues-paying member.
Specifically, these changes are proposed in the following sections of the BY-LAWS:
1. Article II, Section 4, part A. 2. Article IV, Section 8. The Board recommends your vote of approval, or ‘yes’ to this By-Law alteration.
*****************************************
Proposed ALTERATION 3
TO CHANGE THE MONTHS OF OUR FISCAL YEAR.
Here, the proposed change would alter the MBCA-WI fiscal year from the October 1 through September 30 fiscal year (currently observed) to a January 1 through December 31 standardized scheme.
Specifically, this change is proposed in the following section of the BY-LAWS:
Article IV, Section 4. The Board recommends your vote of approval, or ‘yes’ to this By-Law alteration.
*****************************************

Jul-Aug 08
Proposed ALTERATION 4
TO INCLUDE a ‘TWILIGHT’ PROVISION, or MAXIMUM TERM for TREASURER.
Here, the proposed change would limit the maximum term for a Director’s appointed position of Treas-urer (Wisconsin Section of the Club) to 2 consecutive years.
Specifically, this change is proposed in the following section of the BY-LAWS:
Article V, Section 4, part D. The Board recommends your vote of approval, or ‘yes’ to this By-Law alteration.
*****************************************
Proposed ALTERATION 5
TO REDUCE THE QUORUM TO 5% FOR ALL MEETINGS OF THE M EMBERS.
Previously, it took 30 people to vote on anything of importance dealing with the Club’s membership (with a Club that is currently averaging around 300 active members). A quorum is actually a percentage of active members in good standing, and this proposal for quorum is 5% (around 15 people for active membership of 300), down from 10%.
Specifically, this change is proposed in the following section of the BY-LAWS:
Article VI, Section 1, part D. The Board recommends your vote of approval, or ‘yes’ to this By-Law alteration.
*****************************************
Proposed ALTERATION 6
TO REDUCE REQUIRED NOMINATIONS FOR DIRECTOR POSITIO NS TO ONE.
Here, the proposed change would REQUIRE only one (1) name to be nominated (with a maximum of two permitted) for each term-expiring Director position. Previously, we had to have 2 nominees for each ex-piring Director position.
Specifically, this change is proposed in the following section of the By-LAWS:
Article VII, Section 2, part A. The Board recommends your vote of approval, or ‘yes’ to this By-Law alteration.

Regional Defensive DrivingRegional Defensive DrivingRegional Defensive DrivingRegional Defensive Driving and Autocross and Autocross and Autocross and Autocross
On May 10th, 2008 the Wisconsin Section - MBCA hosted this regional event in Milwaukee at Wisconsin’s State
Fair Park. Co-Chairpersons, Nancy Pearson (past President) and Bill Sirny (current board member) collabo-
rated for a well-organized, information-packed, and fun-
filled day with our cars. Anchor Bank made a donation to
help offset some expenses. We thank them, again.
Defensive driving was led by Western Reserve Section
members Frank and Mary Alice Cozza in the morning. Frank also set the autocross course for the afternoon.
Tech inspection was led by members Keith Higgins & his son, Kevin (who drives a hot BMW) and Keith Powers
of Black Forest. Driving instructors were Frank & Mary Alice Cozza, Terry Kiwala (Chicagoland section) and
Keith Higgins. Keith showed everyone how it was done on
the defensive driving course while taking Frank Cozza for
a ride. In the slalom section Keith clipped 3 of 4 cones and
brought one back for all to see under his classic SL. There
was plenty of help to reset the cones and most everyone
attending volunteered for something during the day.
Nancy had arranged for driver fuel with a catered lunch
box by Erin Subway, a franchise owned by the daughter of
long-time member Colleen Lowry. Jim and Cathy Loseke
brought added snacks and juice to supplement that ar-
ranged by Bill & Vicki Sirny.
There was activity all day. Adding to the sounds of the
day, the group was treated to numerous cavalry charges on a bugle by new member Gary Matthies while cars
were starting out. Over forty participated, including several teenage drivers. A number of Chicagoland mem-
bers took home trophies, including our Re-
gional Director, Bill Denton, who went home
a 1st Place winner.
Bill had the scoring charted in Excel and sev-
eral members brought FRS radios to facili-
tate communications. Thanks to everyone
who participated by driving and helping
with the work so we could all have a wonder-
ful experience learning about the handling
capabilities of our Mercedes Benz automo-
biles. Dean Pearson

On June 8th, members of the Wisconsin Section braved historically threatening weather for the 2008
Spring Road Rallye. The observation and distance course be-
gan in Beloit and wound through South-Central Wisconsin’s
country roads and small towns (including the Rallye Masters’
favorite, Footville.)
Getting to Beloit in the morning rain was, in itself, an interest-
ing ride. Thankfully, after a very brief rain at the beginning of
the rallye, the skies cleared, and the convertibles put their tops
down—though the sun couldn’t stop the (relatively) minor
flooding that made some sections of the route more challenging
than planned! Everyone made it through—or around—the
“puddles” and certain teams actually called it their favorite
part of the drive.
After the rallye, we had drinks and a wonderful dinner at the Gun Club in Beloit
where the winners were announced. In first place were Nils Crough and Stephen
Kness, who also have the honor of holding the Sections’ Roberta Schmidt traveling
trophy. (Nils was last fall’s Rallye Master—aside from skill, maybe planning a ral-
lye pays off?) In second place were Jim & Cathy Loseke. Third place went to Dean
& Nancy Pearson. Just after departing the Gun Club the torrential rains returned;
just in time for the trip home. Jim & Cathy had the heavy rain until north of Mil-
waukee as they returned to Green Bay via I-43. To all who signed up a very big
thank you! Dan Hellenberg and Francesca Abbate

Janesville Fahren zum Essen Group Sees Rain, Sun & Stars…
On May 3rd a dozen members met for lunch at Applebees in Janesville.
After a nice meal the rain stopped and the group caravanned to an ob-
scure location near the GM plant. This industrial building houses the
auto and memorabilia collection of Dave Braaten (seen in the upper pic-
ture on the right.) Dave spent a lot of time in the petroleum business
and 30 years racing, collecting and restoring cars -- so he has more than
most. His favorites: M-B 300’s from the 1950’s and ‘60’s. There is
something unique about every one. He also likes the Bears (go figure)
and has an old Chevy from Mike Ditka, plus a couple of Thunderbirds.
His entire space is lined with service station and car items. Thank you,
Dave. We hope to see you at some events. DP

On Saturday, June 28, the Drive-to-Dine was in Wausau. It was a gorgeous day, full of sunshine. It just could not
get any better- or so we thought. Apparently people knew what was coming. I didn’t. Well, let me tell you if you
missed it, you missed out on THE event of the year so far. I expected a few, at most, of the legendary Mercedes 600’s.
We all drove in convoy to Karl’s. I was not prepared for what I saw as we entered the Middelhauve Estate. Besides
the most beautiful log home there was a ten bay garage with double occupancy in many of them. We parked in front
of the “garage”. People, the rest of the story should be a collection of all the superlative words in the dictionary. It
is hard to bring to words what we were about to see. Most stalls contained variations of the 600 including a 6.3.
Mr. Karl Middelhauve started out his life as a wood consultant. He had $100 and spent $93 on business cards and
stationary. He needed a good car and began with a Lincoln. (Well, you’ve got to start somewhere.) Eventually he got
a 300SE 6.3. It had a problem as it did not run well, but the dealer could not pinpoint the problem. So, Karl said:
“Well, I guess I have to get into it myself then.” Well, did he ever.
He got into it so far that he knows now as much, if not more, than the original engineers who designed this, the most
complicated car. As a matter of fact he even improves the best car in the world in many details. He even dares to
say that Die Engel von Sidelfingen sind nicht immer recht, the angels
from Sindelfingen are not always correct…… Sounds arrogant, but he
can back it up. He designed a computer engine management system,
that doubles the mileage (from 9mpg to 18mpg.) Not happy with the
motor mount, he designed a much better one.

He created a new body variation in the form of an El Camino he calls the El Benzo and Benzemino. Karl designed and
made a motor test rig, with an AMG 6.3 engine on it. It has all the controls from the car on it, so he can test the engine
before mounting it back in the car. He added a turbo charger to the 6.3, so now is produces 600hp!
He even made a test rig for the complicated hydraulics of the window operation. I’m sure the list goes on.
The shop is like a lab. So clean, so organized, and any mechanics dream. He has bins of cadmium plated bolts and nuts,
which were just old bolts, but are now cleaned and re-plated. Yes, I guess, he “got into it all right.”
But, with all the value of the cars and parts, you have to realize the MVP is Karl himself. All the knowledge he accumu-
lated in his head is just priceless. I hope someone can siphon some of that to preserve for prosperity.
One of our group asked Karl which is his favorite car in his collection. He stated that if you have children, it is impossi-
ble to choose one over the other.
We were very grateful for the hospitality, especially for his wife, Ruth, who made some exquisite pies and refreshments.
Made so impeccable just like the Benzes. It was so much to take in all at once, so I hope he will have us back sometime.
