~ REFLECTION ~

Today we begin a stretch of Ordinary Time that will last almost two months. Except for today, all the Sunday Gospels will be from Saint Matthew, and all, including today, will be about Jesus’ early public ministry. Let us travel with Jesus these coming weeks as he sets out to proclaim the reign of God, eager to listen and learn what it means to be a disciple.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the mo-ment. This sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning, and those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in Ameri-ca until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges. But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrong-ful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drink-ing from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has en- gulfed the Negro communi- ty must not lead us to a dis- trust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their free-dom is inextrica- bly bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back. No podemos caminar solos. No podemos dar vuelta atras. Martin Luther King Jr. 1963

Did You Know? Help children communicate by reading between the lines. When children express that something is wrong at school or with other activ-ities, it's often the job of caregivers to read between the lines to determine what's really going on. They might say "I'm bored" and need your guidance find-

ing a better school-life balance or engaging in more challenging academic work. Ask them to give examples and to help you un-derstand what is going on. If the child is still being vague, remind them that they can tell you anything and that you'll listen with an open mind. As parents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids deal well with negative feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some way, keeping an open line of communication with kids will enable you to be their advocate. Sabia Usted?
