Tait, Sister A.M. Daughter of James and Agnes Tait of Fremantle and Carmel. Acted voluntarily as district nurse before the coming of the Silver Chain Bush Nursing Association. She was a prime mover toward obtaining a district nurse and was a member of the local CWA which raised the necessary finance.

Tait. Margaret Flora 1968 First superintendent of junior primary schools in WA, appointed 1954, retired December 1963. Died aged 64 years.

Talbot, Elizabeth Haldane

1872 1945 Nee Coward. Born Adelaide SA. Married in Perth to AJ (Tommy) Talbot 2 August 1904, went to live at Mundrabilla Station 60 miles west of Eucla. During 10 years there reared family of 4 children, did much work attending sick and accident cases for white and native people. Once went 3 years before seeing another white woman. Often left alone for months with native workers whilst husband was droving. Later moved to Kalgoorlie, then moved to Mounts Bay Road Perth, where she died.

Talbot, Mabel Born Devonshire, England. Came to Perth 1939. State president of Labour Women’s Organisation; vice president Women’s Service guild. Went to England 1949 and returned 1953. Continued community activities. Member of Slow Learners’ Association. Chairman single unit flats. Vice president Native Welfare Association, also the Tree Society. Member Pan Pacific Association.

Tapper, Mary Ann 1835 1922 Nee Cook. Born Norwich, England. Arrived Fremantle 1846. Died aged 87 years.

Tawler, Ellen Catherine Arrived from England and made her home in Northampton 1880, later settling in Geraldton. Great worker for children sick in hospitals, also Christian temperance worker.

Taylor, Rebecca Lamont 1940. Arrived in Yuna district October 1910. Helped in cases of sickness as no doctor. Delivered 11 of the first babies born around Yuna district.

Taylor, Ada 1931 Nee Rothacker. Wife of William Alexander Taylor. Arrived Kintore near Coolgardie 1898. Went to Broad Arrow 1900. Had 7 children. Died at Broad Arrow.

Taylor, Amelia 12 Dec 1885 1 Feb 1955 Pioneer of Pingelly, lived there for 50 years. Had 6 children and fostered State ward children and babies. Died age 70 years.

Taylor, Annie Elizabeth 3 Mar 1859 Wife of Richard who was member of water police at Rottnest. First child born on Rottnest. Later transferred to Carnarvon as Sergeant of Police. Mother of 1st white child born at Carnarvon, a son Harry, and was presented with silver tea service by Council.

Taylor, Jane Fisher 9 Aug 1853 8 May 1942 Nee Ballantyne. Wife of Robert Smith. Born Ireland. Died in Perth aged 89 years. Came from Victoria with her husband and 8 children in 1891. Took up virgin land at “The Grange”, Katanning.

Taylor, Kitty Wife of Walter Taylor. Pioneer of Latham.

Taylor, Mary Alice 29 Nov 1874 10 Aug 1946 Nee Organ. Wife of William Henry Taylor. Married in Esperance 26 September 1899. As a bride went by horse and dray to her home arriving there 7 January 1900, a long drive through bush tracks. She set up housekeeping in a tent whilst her husband went prospecting. In April she became ill and expected her 1st child and had to make same rough trip to Esperance, then coach to Kalgoorlie – baby born 20 September 1900. A life of service in Ravensthorpe.

Taylor, Mary Ann 1865 1950 Nee Field. Born Tipperary, York. Arrived Southern Cross 1894. 12 children of the marriage.

Taylor, Mary Yates Nee Bussell. Arrived with her mother aboard “James Pattison” in 1833. Married 18 September 1837. Governor Stirling attended the wedding. Endured hardship when their farm proved unsuccessful. Thesis at Rooney Library, Education Department.

Taylor, May Bell Pioneer woman arrived at Tambellup district 1898. Acted as midwife.

Teakle, Bertha 1876 1961 Nee Bridgeman. Wife of David John Teakle. Married 1900. Migrated from SA 1901, one of the first families to take up farming in northern districts, only transport horse drawn vehicles. She reared family of 7 children. Her main activities were for Methodist Church, CWA and Red Cross

Teakle, Clarissa 1865 Nee Jarrad. Wife of John Saunders Teakle. Born in SA. After marriage migrated to Isseka via Northampton 1901, where they took up land and farmed until retirement. She was known to all as Grandma Teakle and often acted as midwife. Died aged 62 years.

Teale, Dorothy Arrived Fremantle 1921 with husband and first 2 sons, lived at Mt Helena where 3rd son was born. Mr Teale employed as farm labourer, later allocated block 1923 at Turkey Hill - Depression forced them to abandon this farm. Moved to Corinthian, husband employed as miner, 7 more children born here. 1940 moved to Southern Cross, husband died 1955. Mrs Teale died at Southern Cross 1957. a willing worker for Anglican church, helped in many other places.

Teasdale, Martha Bell Arrived in WA from England 1911, lived in the Belka Valley until her death 28 November 1960. The farm was known as “Cumberland Farm”, Belka.

Arrived from England as a young bride 1911, went to virgin block and bag house. Here she raised 6 children, made clothes and educated her family. Never to busy ot help her neighbours.

Temby, Elizabeth Jane 1881 Nee Hocking. Born Clunes, Victoria. Left Victoria before 1st World War, came to Perth and married. Lived in Perth where children were educated. Bought property at Bodallin and developed it. 1st house was primitive iron hut until 1930 when new house was built. Mrs Temby grew vegetables, made own brad, butter, pickled meat to keep it without refrigeration. Retired from farm 1945, left it to their son.

Temby, Hilda Jane Came from SA 1900, went to Tambellup and was first post mistress. Lived there until 1966.

Temperley, Ivy Wife of Norman Temperley. Pioneered golf in WA.

Terlich, Louisa Arrived at Katanning from NSW 1892.

Terrell, Anne Wife of Thomas Terrell. Pioneer of Brookbanks near Coolgardie 1902-1916.

Thackrah, Susannah Nee Johnson. Daughter of John Henry Johnson, an early pioneer of the State. Wife of Robert Henry Thackrah who was born at Dale Bridge 1858, educated in Northam where he went into business helped by his wife.

Thelly, Amy Ethel Nee Pethitt. With her husband Martin Thelly, came to Cunderdin 1908, taking up virgin land on which they pioneered.

Thomas, Emma Eliza 25 Mar 1872 21 Sept 1954 Nee Burchell. Wife of Herbert Frederick Thomas, police inspector of Broome 1894-1899. Born Norwood SA. Married in Perth 1893, went to Broome where living was hard, supplies limited, shipping uncertain. November 1946 awarded Red Cross medal and ribbon for honorary work Red Cross Mt Lawley. 4 boys.

Thomas, Evelyn Pioneer of the district. Through the last war at Pingrup.

Thomas, J.M. K.B.M. 25 Sept 1959 Nee Howe. Born Torquay, Devon, England. Came to SA on “Orizaba”, later wrecked off Rottnest. Married and lived in Gawler. 10 years later came to WA, taking up land at Wagin. Late went to Goldfields, Boulder. 1900’s went to Caversham, clearing land to start orchard where she worked and kept it going whilst husband worked to pay off property. One of earliest settlers in Swan District. Pianist, kept busy playing 1st World War for Red Cross & RSL; organist for local church. Died aged 89 years.

Thomas, Jane Mt Magnet

Thomas, Louise Nee Caporn. Arrived Swan River settlement on ship “Simon Taylor” 1842, settled near Point Walter with parents. Married, later moved to Champion Bay area, pioneered in this area; Louisa’s remaining 5 children married and settled there. Went to Roebourne Pilbara district with McKenzie Grant; son Alex lived Roebourne for many years, youngest son William spent all his life in Geraldton. Mr Thomas died

from sunstroke. About 1903 Mrs Thomas returned to White Gum Valley where she died some years later.

Thomas, Maria 10 June 1865 15 May 1940 Wife of Dan. Born at Northampton. Mother died when she was 9 years old, she lived with Captain & Mrs Samuel Mitchell, “Chiverton House”, as nursemaid, later lived with magistrate & Mrs Maitland Brown at Geraldton. When old enough went back to father, 2 brothers and a sister. Lived near Wheel of Fortune, Northampton; she cared for sick, washed and ironed 6 days a week. Married in 1886, aged 21 years, travelled with husband, a teamster and endured many hardships on the track. Later settled on farm near Northampton. Known for her good work. Buried in Northampton cemetery.

Thomas, Mary 1892 Nee Woodrow. Born Devonshire, England. Came to Albany with her husband approx. 1836. With Mr Greenshields, her husband built St Johns church, Albany. Reared 8 children.

Thomas, Rose The oldest settler of Maya district, arrived there February 1923.

Thomas, Winifred Mary 1871 Nee Brownrigg. Born Toodyay. Married Charles Frederick Thomas of Mooyoonooka 1891 at Geraldton. Her husband took 1st load of diggers and gear to gold rush at Cue, after couple of trips they returned to their farm at Mooyoonooka. 1906 Mr Thomas took up land at Three Springs, she was 2nd woman to come there, known as the “mother of Three Springs”. Later years conditions became easier, Mrs Thomas able to pursue her hobbies and interests.

Thompson, Cecelia Adelaide Maud

1871 Wife of Frank Snellgrove Thompson. Arrived WA as a bride, went directly to Warrawagine Station, a most isolated outpost on edge of desert. 18 months without seeing another white woman and lived under very primitive and lonely conditions. 1914 they pioneered a farm at Katanning.

Nee Nicholls. Arrived Doodlakine 23 November 1910. Married Bryce Thompson 1917 and went ot live in Bruce Rock on virgin land.

Thompson, Hilda Wife of Frederick. Came to Kondinin 1919. Had 7 children. Property known as Henclersyde Farm.

Thompson, Janet Born Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In 1924 did first weaving of cloth at Albany Woollen Mills – spun the first yarn for woven blankets, rugs and melange.

Thompson, Margaret Nee Murphy. Born Ireland, daughter of Patrick Murphy and Mary Egan. Married 18 November 1855, Robert, son of Charles Thompson & Helen Cowl, living at Bibino WA. Marriage recorded parochial records, Benedictine Abbey, New Norcia. Land taken up 1864, property known as Jiorol in name of Thompson & Hunt.

Thompson, Miriam 12 April 1863 1933 Born Bingley, Yorkshire, England. Came to WA 9 November 1896. 6 children, last born on the farm 3 May 1909.

Thompson, Rebecca 1889 Wife of William Edmund Thompson. Born Pembroke, Wales. Qualified as a school teacher, came to WA 1913, teaching at Muradup & Kwolyn. Married at Shackleton 19 July 1921. Settled at Burakin October 1925, virgin land Ningham Loc. 107, lived in tent and home built of timber and hession, earth floor, iron roof. Raised 2 children, nearest railway being Ballidu 26 miles away, doctor and hospital 50 miles away. Left district 958 following husband’s death.

Thompson, Sarah Jane With daughter Alice, arrived in Kununoppin 1912, kept boarding house, drapers and newsagency and helped in all community work. After daughter arrived she carried in the shop.

23 Nov 1885 1959 Nee Wheatley. Married Andrew Knox Thomson 1917. Five children. Lived 42 years at Lake Mears. Died in car accident.

Thomson, Mary Pioneered farm south east of Tammin 18 miles, 1911.

Thornett, Anne Marie 6 June 1873 10 Nov 1963 Born Narrabi, NSW. Came to Dowerin 1909. Foundation member of CWA, also Anglican guild member. Exhibitor and worker for Agricultural Society.

Thornton, Florence May Arrived Denmark district 1907 and took up virgin land. Property still in family.

15 Nov 1882 Family were first settlers in district, 1869, 15 years before next settler arrived. Born Tambellup. Married there 4 October 1902, first wedding in district.

Throssell, Laura Jane Nee Smeed. Wife of Harry Fermaner Throssell. Born Kent, England; came to Australia aged 14. Married 1894 to HF Throssell, son of Hon. George Throssell. He was born

Northam October 1872. 1900 Mr & Mrs Throssell went on to Oakover Farm, 3 miles from Northam on York Road. She was keen horticulturalist, won many prizes at shows. Family of 1 son and 4 daughters.

Thurston, Eva May 1887 Nee Hodges. Wife of Victor T. Thurston. Born Adelaide. 1899 came to WA with her parents. Lived at Northam. Married 1912, went to live at Wyalkatchem when no railway, hospital, doctor there. Her husband, a blacksmith built 1st house in the town. 4 children.

Tilley, Jan Born England, 1 of a family of 15 who all migrated to WA whilst young. Came to Morawa to work 1922, married a farmer the next year. Family of 4 boys who all reside at Morawa

Tilley, Susan Jane 1870 27 Nov 1947 Nee Tunstall. Married Alfred Ernst Tilley 1891, a boat builder and owner of TSS “Zephyr” & “Emerald”. Lived in convict house where traffic bridge is in Fremantle. 5 of the 7 children were born on the banks of the Swan River.

Tinker, Albina First marriage – Lindley. First midwife at Tammin where she settled 1897.

Tinson, Gertrude May 14 April 1897 Nee Breakwell. Married Edgar Tinson 28 August 1920. Mandurah Peel Estate. Settled in district 1924. 5 children.

Tobias, Louisa As a bride went to Coolgardie from Melbourne 1894, the last 10 miles by horse and dray. Her 1st child was 4th white child

born in Coolgardie. Later her husband, self and 5 children pioneered new farm at Yorkrakine, lived 2 years in barn with earth floor and hessian walls.

Tobin, Hannah Maria 17 Jan 1872 15 Dec 1962 Left England 1882 on SS “Scottish Admiral” for Queensland. Arrived WA 1901 with young family. Went to Maylands 1905, lived there for 57 years. Helped and supported local church and community organisations, received an award 1951 from Mothers’ Union for loyal work at St Lukes church Maylands. Died aged 90 years.

Todd, Mary Alice Came from England 1911, went to virgin block, pioneered a farm until 1960. A willing worker in agriculture and horticultural society, Anglican church guild and most social affairs

Toll, Violet Nee Boddington. Wife of Andrew. Pioneer of Stoke farm, Highbury, which she developed with her husband. Arab horses, sheep and cattle.

Tomelty, Ethel Isabel Early settler in Lake Varley district, early January 1929 to approximately 1955.

Toms, Christina 17 Sept 1884 Born at Williams. Helped her husband and later 2 daughters to run a country shop during 2nd War. Had 5 daughters. Always very interested in district activities, CWA, sport and church. A fine woman who inspired many.

Toms, Ethel First teacher at East Denmark school about 1918, later at Denmark. Founder of Denmark dramatic club for young people. The Denmark school library is named in her honour in recognition of the work she did for young people.

Tonkin, Dinah Nee Edwards. Arrived Swan River Colony aged 13 years in February 1830 on the “Hoogli”. Later married John Foss Tonkin (who also came out on the “Hoogli”). Her father came

out under contract to build the first mill in WA for Lionel Samson.

Tonkin, Emma Elizabeth 1869 Ca.1953 Nee Turner. Wife of Charles Phillip Tonkin. Born at Serpentine. First postmistress at Serpentine.

Tonkin, Margaret Ann Isabella

Nee Daddow. Pioneer, took up virgin land Yilgarn Loc. 234, 32 miles north of Burracoppin. In 1923 at Warralakin.

Townsend, Elizabeth 1942 Pioneered virgin land in Cuballing district just after turn of century. Owing to prevailing conditions eg lack of transport, hospitals, etc. on many occasions she confined those women in need, also went to anyone in need in the district.

Townsend, Elizabeth Nee Gamlen. Wife of David. Came to WA from SA in 1894. Acquired land at Cuballing. Pioneered farm. Known later as “Cammodine”.

Townsend, Florence Pioneered ladies bowling club at Narrogin. With her husband established the greens and small club house, lending money, furniture and crockery from her home. Was a foundation member.

Townsend, Mary Nee Gillam. Married Harry Townsend at St Johns Church of England on 23 March 1876, spent honeymoon at “Bolgamup” in the Porongurups where they went with horse and dray. First on farm known as Silver Grass, then to “Dovedale” at Tenterden. Went to Albany for stores with horse and dray, trip took 3 days each way.

Tranter, Annie Came to Pingrup 1921 and started Sunday School, continued until her death aged 49 years.

Trappitt, Rachel Edith 1888 1956 Nee Littleboy. Wife of Henry Charles Trappitt. Borden 1923.

Tratham, Clara Came from SA 1903; pioneer of farm until 1958.

Tratham, Kathie Came from SA 1903, went to Tambellup. Was first trained nurse and midwife there. Lived there until 1956.

Tratman, Bessie 1949 Nee Way. Arrived Kalgoorlie shortly after Paddy Hannan found gold. Started 1st hospital made of hessian and lined with green baize. Used flat soda water for patients, water being very scarce. Became matron of 1st hospital built in Kalgoorlie. 1896 married Arthur Vernon Harvey, daughter born 1897 (now Mrs Salmond. SA). Husband went to Boer War, she returned to Kalgoorlie as matron. Her father was Dr Ed. W. Way of Adelaide, an uncle Sir Samuel Way, her brother was Dr Inman Way of Boulder. As Miss Way she pioneered nursing in the Goldfields, examined and set papers for the trainee nurses 1894. 1915 she married Charles S. Tratman, her 2nd husband. She died at her South Perth home.

Travers, Georgina 1880 Born Scotland. Went first to Broome, her husband was a pearler. Went to Carnarvon May 1907, opened store (Travers’ Store) at Yankee Town. In 1911 opened store in Robinson Street, East Carnarvon.

Trevena, Sarah 1868 1941 Nee Gardiner. Wife of Edwin. Born Ferguson district. Pioneer of Preston Valley district where they took up virgin land in 1902.

Treasure, Emma Jane 25 Dec 1868 Nee Carpenter. Wife of John Treasure. Born Arthur River. Married at Kojonup 14 August 1886, lived in Kojonup where her husband went farming and carrying. Lived in Esperance and Norseman for several years, then returned to Kojonup. Reared family of 6 sons and 3 daughters.

Tregenza, Mary Jane 1964 Nee Brown. Married 1906, settled on homestead block at South Caroling 1906. Lived in hessian and gimlet stick house until home could be built. Reared 4 sons and 4 daughters. Buried at South Caroling.

Tregurtha, Mrs B. Organised first boys’ hostel in Northam 1922-1925, “Warri House”, Gordon Street Northam. Also first professional woman golfer in Northam.

Treloar, Elizabeth Maria Feb 1875 15 March 1958 Nee Overall. Born Victoria. Came to Perth and married 12 June 1894, journeyed to Bridgetown by coach and to their farm by horse and cart, distance of 20 miles to “Beda”. Lived there all her life, helped in all public activities and reared family of 3 sons and 8 daughters, including triplets. Buried at Boyup Brook.

Treloar, Rose Anna Wife of William. Pioneer of Katanning. Arrived from SA with husband and 3 children 1899. Farmed 7 miles east of Katanning.

Trigwell, Fanny Nee Gardiner. Wife of Alfred Trigwell whom she married 1889. Miss Gardiner was 1st schoolmistress ar Ferguson 1875 with 12 pupils, she taught there until 1885 when the school was transferred to Minninup, later Donnybrook. Trigwell, Lucy 1858 1918 Nee Chapman. Born Harvey. Wife of Walter Trigwell of Careydale, Donnybrook, whom she married 20 June 18977 at St Pauls Church (later cathedral) Bunbury. She was Donnybrook’s first midwife. Often travelling long distances on foot or on horseback to attend her cases, going as far as Boyup Brook, Millingup, Cundinup. Nearest doctor was at Bunbury, 25 miles away. Not only did she work for the community, but reared family of 11 children.

Trinidad, Louise Emma 1886 Born Dandenong, Victoria. Came to WA aged 12 years. Married in Perth 26 October 1907, then went to virgin land at Ejanding, 12 miles from Dowerin with her husband where they farmed for 30 years. Family of 5 children.

Trong, Auguste 15 Aug 1966 Arrived in Coolgardie and married on 26 August 1896, went to Boulder to live, later to Burtville and Laverton. She died in Esperance 2 months before her 95th birthday.

Troup, Emily Nee Pike; formerly Mrs Hillary. Arrived in Kukerin with husband and 2 small girls to take up virgin land, only transport a horse and cart. Store was 25 miles away, doctor 50 miles. 3rd daughter born 1914. Widowed 1925, later married Mr A. Troup, a pioneer farmer of the district. They retired to Albany 1945.

Truscott, Louisa 1870 July 1968 1896 went to Bremer Bay as a bride with her husband who was in postal service there.

Truslove, Charlotte Hannah

1916 Nee Gee. Parents came on the “Caroline”. Charlotte was born Murray Street Perth. Married John Truslove. Lived mostly in Wanneroo, Swan and Midland districts. Had an inn between Guildford and Bullsbrook. Eldest son was first police officer at Esperance. She had a large family. Died Midland aged 83 years.

Tucker, Ethel Rosina 1886 1960 Wife of FR Tucker. Family of 7 sons and 2 daughters, 3 sons went to war. Died at Capel.

Tucker, Irene Capel Arrived in Australia 1912. Married 1921; went to virgin block at South Kuminin, helped husband pioneer the property. Travelled every 3 months to Doodlakine to get her stores, going by horse and cart 80 miles.

Tuckey, Lucy Sarah 11 June 1870 28 May 1954 Nee Green. Wife of Edward. Born Pinjarra, one of 12 children. Married at Pinjarra by Rev. Alderson; 4 children. Went farming and fruit growing at Coolup on Murray River. A keen needlewoman and housewife, excelled in horticulture. Hard worker for Red Cross and CWA. They retired to Mandurah and celebrated their golden and diamond wedding. Mrs Tuckey died at Pinjarra aged 84 years.

Tuckey, Maryann Esther Arrived from England 1830, shortly after settles in Mandurah where she lived all her life. With nursing experience she gave assistance as midwife to women who settled there. With her husband went through much hardship to make prosperous life for others. She taught natives.

Turner, Ada Elizabeth Went to outback NSW as bride of 19 years in 1866 or 87. Ger eldest daughter was born at Balranald 1868. She had 10 children. Came to WA 1902 and took up land at Narrogin 14-mile brook – cleared the land with her husband, looked after the farm while he got road work, etc. to establish the farm.

Turner. Elizabeth 1961 Wife of D.J. Turner. Came to WA as bride early 1900’s, lived on Goldfields, Kalgoorlie, etc. in tents. Took up virgin land East Pingelly 1906.

Turner. Elizabeth Sept 1959 Nee Brown. Arrived Fremantle 4 March 1913, 2 days later married George Edward Turner at St Marys church, Colin Street Wet Perth. After 12 months living in tents at Manjimup, they went to Wyalkatchem where she helped

husband establish a general store and contracting business. They later took up farming. 4 daughters and 1 son. Aged 79 years, buried at Wyalkatchem.

Turner, Elsie May Came to WA with parents after a month’s trip from England, came from landing at Albany to Perth where they lived for a few weeks. The family moved to Beenup (now Byford), but she stayed in Perth with friends to learn telegraphy. When Armadale post office was opened, she was appointed postmistress.

Turner, Olivia 1897 Came to Albany from SA 1905, was married at St Johns Church, went to virgin property on the Warren Road, East Katanning. Built a home themselves in which they lived for 9 years, then built a stone house.

Turner, Mrs Sam Came to WA with parents from England, travelled fro Albany to Perth where they lived for few weeks before taking up land at Beenup (now Byford).

Twine, Ida May 1880 1954 Born New Zealand, spent most of her girlhood in Adelaide, then moved to Fremantle with her parents and became a qualified schoolteacher. Married near Toodyay 1900, they took up farming, living in a tent until brick house was built. Always assited newcomers. Was a good shot and horse rider. 8 girls and 2 boys. Moved to Beverley 1921, was a foundation member of CWA, served a term as president. Died at Beverley

Twine, Sister Ilene Trained Sydney and Melbourne. Pioneered infant health centres in many parts of WA, first at Bridgetown, November 1849. Eventually took over as correspondence sister. Also worked in various metro and suburban areas until her retirement 1967.

Tyrrell, Catherine 1926 Pioneer of virgin land at Waterloo. Drove from Fremantle by horse and dray in 1892 and lived there until her death, aged 93 years.

Tyler, Annie Louisa 25 May 1851 26 Jan 1937 Nee Toovey. Born in Guildford, lived in Katanning and acted as midwife in early days. She died there.

Uglow, Louise Victoria May 1872 Born Clunes, Victoria. Arrived Perth 1896. Married Horace W Uglow 1904 St Marys Church of England West Perth. Went to Menzies, then a big mining town. Spun her own wool with an old spinning wheel.

Unstead, Jane 2 Oct 1871 26 Oct 1929 Nee Sallens. Born Victoria. Married and came to WA with 4 children in 1904, later 2 more children born. With her husband settled on virgin block at Scotts Brook 1905, horse and cart only transport – the trip to Scotts Brook from Fremantle took 10 days through rough tracks, camping at night and cooking damper, kangaroo and possum meat. An active member of Red Cross 1914-10.

Uphill, Annie 1864 1950 Nee Livingstone. Wife of R.G. Uphill. Born at Mt Gambier, SA. Married 1885. Came to WA with 2 month old daughter 1886, landing at Albany. Spent 5 years on Goldfields, 2 more children born there. 1891 moved to Greenbushes taking up virgin land Balingup Brook. Home built of ironstone, later additional rooms of timber. 4 more children born, she educated them all. Awarded certificate by Red Cross for her work during WWl. Retired to Greenbushes 1936 and died there.

Uphill, Gertrude Shaw Pioneer farming Tammin 4 July 1904 to November 1958.

Uren, A.G. Wife of Alfred Nicholas Uren. Arrived from SA 1892. Married a Southern Cross the same year in small church with earth floor and seats of boards placed on saplings hammered in ground. They went to Coolgardie by camel train where husband worked for several years in a mine. Later went to Kalgoorlie where father-in-law built first condenser for water.

They later attended ceremony of ‘turning on water’ from Mundaring Weir. Later years pioneered small mixed farm at Hamel.

Valentine, Olive Catherine

Nee Sinclair. Born at the “Patch”, Port Lincoln SA. Married 1910 to a forestry officer who resigned his duties to take up land at Morawa when first opened for selection February 1911. Property named “Santalia”. 5 children. Original home was hessian, water carted in 100 gallon lots 9 miles from homestead. Helped husband develop farm and hardship of getting good food made life difficult as roads and communities were non-existent. 1913 she made 40 mile journey by horse and cart to Dongara for birth of her youngest son. During WWl she managed farm whilst husband overseas. As district developed she offered her home to young people away from their family. Among other community interests, she was foundation member of Morawa CWA. Died in Morawa after 30 years of farming.

Vallance, May, JP As a JP sat on courts and was a member of Perth Women’s Service Guild, also a state president.

Valmadre, Alice Wife of Attillio Valmadre. Went to Narembeen East 1921 on virgin land.

Van, Nellie Gertrude Nee Foale. Came with her family from SA 1911. Settled on virgin land in Bruce Rock district. Married Wally Dew Van of Shackleton, helped to develop a farm.

Vanzetti, Evelyn 1883 1959 Wife of Francesco. Born SA. Came to WA as young girl, first to Moora. Married there 1903, then to Coorow where she settled on virgin land 1910. After 5 years husband went back to University teaching but Mrs Vanzetti kept farm going with help of her 2 sons. Later known as best farm in district.

Veall, Helen Ralston Came from England 1926 and went to Denmark. An active social worker for district and was first liaison officer of Red Cross.

Venning, Ethel Elizabeth 1886 1969 Nee Black. Wife of John Howard Venning. Pioneered in Pingelly 1904-1916; Gnowangerup 1916-1962. A pioneer of farm life, helped in all community activities, P&C, CWA, hospital board, etc.

Pioneer spirit keen despite hardships. Had 1 daughter in Day Dawn, 4 more children when they moved to Perth. Lived in Leederville many years, transport 1901-03 horse drawn coach to corner Newcastle and Oxford Streets.

Waddell, Edith Mabel Nee Proctor. Wife of William Waddell. Born Perth. Pioneered “Lamesley” farm in Walgoolan 1926.

Waddilove, Agnes Arrived from England 1918 and settled on virgin property at West Morawa. Great worker for all community efforts.

Wade, Emily Wife of Thomas Wade. Arrived WA 1830. Held large acreage, whish is now North Perth.

Wadsworth, Daisy June 1945 Arrived Nungarin May 1913. Was Foundation member of Nungarin CWA. 4 sons and 3 daughters.

Wager, Evangeline A. Nee Tuckey. Born in Mandurah. First postmistress, telegraphist in December 1886. She trained Clarence Cooper to be her successor. Lived to see her one-roomed cottage become a brick post office just a few doors away.

Waghorn, Mrs Wife of one of Cunderdin’s first farmers, the farm being only 1 mile from township. It passed into ownership of the AJ Kitto family and is owned by Lloyd Kitto. Farm is known as “Beaucant”.

Wahlsten, Lillian May Nee Miller. Wife of Roy Alexander Wahlsten. Pioneer of “Chilton Park”. Walgoolan 1923. Active in all district affairs, also CWA.

Waldeck, Catherine 1852 1935 Need Pearson. Wife of Joshua. Arrived Champion Bay as a baby, her mother was first white woman there. 1885 her husband went to south Murchison, previously had pioneered

at Greenough, then to Mt Magnet & Murchison. 13 children – one was speared by natives. Her last baby was born at station, no assistance, but died at 2 months.

Waldeck, Eleanor Nee York. First marriage – Gooch. Married in Culham church 1866, went to Wandagee October 1886. Pioneer of district.

Waldeck, Fredericka Wilhemina Ludovica

1905 Arrived Fremantle in barque “Addingham” 26 June 1836. Married in Perth 14 August 1836. Pioneer mission to natives at Middle Swan and Wanneroo 1846. Pioneer settler in Champion Bay district 1859 until her death at Greenough.

Waldeck, Isabella Nee Brand. Pioneer of Dongara 1867. 1866 owned “Bonniefield” and one of her children laid the foundation stone of Methodist Manse.

Wallbann, Mrs J. Family came to Scotts Brook from Victoria 1903, by buggy from Bridgetown, selected land and planted an orchard. Mrs Wallbann did bush nursing as nearest doctor was either Bridgetown or Bunbury and only transport spring cart. Nearest railway was at Bridgetown.

Wallis, Alice Chlovena 1948 First white woman to settle in the bush 4 miles east of what is now Ballidu, in January 1910 – nearest railhead was Goomalling, 70 miles away by sandalwood tracks. Nearest white woman was Mrs Sticklnad who lived 3 miles east of Wongan Hills, 35 miles away. Family lived in tents and bush shelter untilo rough humpy was erected, floor was levelled. Mrs Wallis lived in Ballidu until she was 80 years old. Died in Perth after a short illness.

Wallis, Emma 1852 Nee Green. Born at Mandurah. Wife of John Wallis. First nurse at Walliston and had over 200 babies to her credit. Where they settled was first called Wallis Crossing and Wallis Landing, sometimes 12 Mile Siding. In 1915 given the name Walliston.

Wallis, Kate Winifred Nee Edwards. Wife of Frederick Reuben Wallis. Daughter of Rev. Benjamin Edwards of SA. Married by Rev. Fred Finch at Kalamunda, 19 April 1905. Mr Wallis’ parents were early pioneers of Wallis’ Landing, now Walliston. Was postmistress for 33 years at Walliston. Foundation member and president of first Women’s Auxiliary of RSL, and remembered for her untiring efforts for comforts and music for wounded soldiers. 5 children.

1918 Arrived Australia from Halifax March 1908 with husband, J. Walshaw, 3 sons and 1 daughter. Took up virgin land at Kulikup 1908 and lived on the farm until her death, aged 66 years.

Walters, Mrs 26 Jan 1871 Nee Cronin. Wife of John Edgar Walter. Born at Kojonup, came to Katanning 1875 with her parents. Her mother died when she was 13 years old and with 2 older sisters they brought up younger children – 10 in the family. Married JE Walter of Rochester, Melbourne, 1907 in Katanning – he died 1907. For 18 years she lived with her daughter, Mrs Herzel Baker of Perth. As young girl she collected specimens of wildflowers and sent them to Baron von Mueller of Melbourne who started the first study of wildflowers in Australia 1880’s-1890’s. 3 kinds still in good numbers are Blue Smokebush found at Coolgardie, a single button daisy flower and blue lilac flower, similar to a daisy found at Palingup.

Walter, Ruby May Settled on virgin land 1911 at Denmark. Took a keen interest in progress of Scotsdale.

Walters, Annie Arrived Albany 9 January 1911 on the “Rimutaka”. Took up virgin country. Lived in a tent, cooked, etc. for gang of 6 men clearing for her husband, in the open. Stayed in Denmark over 40 years.

1865 1947 Wife of Charles Ferdinand Wanke. Born Goolwa SA. Pioneer of Katanning shire. Came to WA 1900 by ship SS “Coolgardie”, landed at Albany, travelled by buggy and horses to Mt Barker and from there by train to Katanning as road became impassable. Purchased Moojebin station where they farmed for 9 years, they then transferred to Katanning townsite. Mrs Wanke was Chairman of Road Board for 15 years. Mrs Wanke was active in public affairs. Had 7 children.

Wansborough, Frances Wife of George Wansborough, first cabinet maker and undertaker in York.

Wansborough, Hannah Prangle

1810 Born Maddington, Wilshire, England. 1831, aged 21 years married Daniel Wansborough. A few months later set off in the “Drumore” for Swan River Colony. After husband worked there a few years, they took up farming at York, 78 miles of unmade road in horse and buggy in all weather. Many attacks by hostile natives. Without any nursing or medical aid, she bore 10 children, 2 died in infancy. A quiet worker for all civic and district affairs. In later life lived in Perth. Died

Want, Fanny Kenny Nee Shears. Arrived from England and India 1929 and settled in Lake Carmody area with her family and sister. First 2 white women there. Inn 1930 moved to Kalgarin and farmed there until 1940. Died in 1954. Family of 4 children.

Ward, Amelia Born in SA, came to WA with her husband and spent many years farming at Ballaying, east Wagin. Took up virgin property.

Ward, Amelia Martha 1891 1933 Nee Crow. Born Fremantle. Went to Wiluna aged 18 or 19, worked at hotel and met Mr Ward who had butcher’s shop. Married in 1912. Had 7 sons and 1 daughter. Took up 1,000,000 acres virgin country 60 miles N.E. of Wiluna – no white man had been there. Road cut by hand so horses could get through. Home of angle iron posts and corrugated iron roof and sides was built – a bow shed being used as quarters in interim. Mail truck arrived once a month. Trips to Wiluna only made when absolutely necessary. Settled on station 1928, there another baby born. Mrs Ward taught children by correspondence as well as looking after large family and husband’s brother and father. Later she moved into Wiluna to live so the teenage children could go to school. 1933 a terrific storm hit Wiluna and whilst diverting water, she got a chill and died in 3 days. She had worked hard and had never been ill before.

Worked as dressmaker in Kalgoorlie. Lived in Kalgoorlie in early years 1890. Suffered many hardships, water being worst as they were only allowed few pints per day despite dust and heat.

Wardell-Johnson, Emily 1834 Feb 1914 Arrived in WA in sailing ship “Robert Morrison” in 1869. Wife of Rev. W. Wardell-Johnson, rector of Albany for 25 years.

Warnecke, Hannah Abt 1859 Nov 1922 Nee Loftus. Married Albert Christian Warnecke and came to WA 1894. Mr Warnecke selected land whilst with a surveying party early 1900’s. Hannah joined him in 1908. He was killed in a storm 1912 and Hannah carried on with help of 2 sons. Dick the eldest was killed at Gallipoli 1915, after this Hannah carried on with Victor, then aged 17 years.

Married Robert O’Connor 1906, lived at mining towns in tents, husband drove a camel team to Payne’s Find, took up pastoral leases “Bullingarra” and later “Youangarra”. Pioneer of the outback.

Waters, Ellen Wife of J.P. Waters. Came to Quairading 1909. Pioneered property known as “Kia-Ora”.

Waters, Rose 4 July 1887 18 Dec 1961 Nee Lee. Born at Ellins Brook on the Swan, only daughter of Mr & Mrs Fred Lee. Parents moved to Nunyle. She married Robert William Waters at Culham on 30 June 1909. They moved to a camp at Beejording, clearing land for other people until they saved enough money to take up a virgin block at Wyening which they called “Waterlee”. Eventually built 2-roomed house of rubberoid with a tin kitchen. Mrs Waters helped with clearing and burning off and joined

husband in all the pioneering. She could ride a horse and use a gun, play the organ for church and accordion for dances held in big barn they built in 1920s. 7 daughters and 2 sons. Buried Toodyay cemetery.

Waters, Sarah 1799 1854 Wife of Thomas Waters. Came to WA from South Africa to marry and lived in new settlement, wedding took place in bush shed in St Georges Terrace. After they drove in dray to their home at Swan River settlement to find natives had burnt it down. After living an arduous life, she died peacefully at Guildford.

She also helped with clearing etc. Eight children of the marriage – last 2 being born in hospital. A wonderful pioneer, she had 25 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren.

Watts, Mrs Francis Mar 1849 1933 Nee Sherwood. 3rd daughter of Mr & Mrs Sherwood who arrived in colony 1853 from England. Educated in Perth where she lived until marriage to Francis Watts, whose parents arrived from England 1829. Travelled to their property at Wandering, 75 miles from Perth, by horse team. Virgin farm, surmounted difficulties of developing land. 11 children, 3 died in infancy. Widowed 1900, aged 53 years, she carried on farming with help of family. Resided on property until her death. 24 grandchildren. Buried Wandering cemetery, Anglican portion.

Watts, Joanna (Hanna) 1869 1942 Nee Davis. Born Tralee, Ireland. Arrived in Albany 1887. Taught at Albany school, later King River school and was governess to Sounness children. 1899 left Albany and was appointed to Wandering school where she met and married Francis Henry Watts1901. They pioneered farm at Dewlyeelin, Popanyinning, and she also worked for local organisations.

Pioneer woman of property known as Fair View, East Kendenup. Four sons, one daughter. Emigrated to Tasmania as a child of 13. Later served in Salvation Army and became an officer. Spent some years in SA, married in WA 1905 and lived at Pingelly, Kalgoorlie, Gnowangerup before coming to Kendenup.

Webb, Emma Louisa Formerly Mrs T. Browne. After her husband was killed by a falling tree, Mrs Webb re-married and went to live at Datatine, East Katanning early in 1918. She worked long, hard hours with her husband and had 3 daughters.

Instigated 1st CWA and lending library, opened boarding house, was interested in Red Cross and member of Women’s Auxiliary 1939-45 War. Helped many during drought and depression years.

West, Lavinia Jane Nee Height. Married Francis West 1908. Family od 2 daughters and 2 sons. Youngest son carrying on farm known as “Flemington” 12 miles from Wagin and taken up in virgin state. Lived in Wagin. 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren.

West, Marjorie Bowe Nee Stubbs. Came to Kondinin as 3rd school teacher. Married 1923, had 7 children. Property known as “Evasham Farm”.

West, Mary Pioneer of east Chapman district. Husband cleared and planted what land finances allowed, then set off with wagon and team carting supplies to Goldfields from Champion Bay to Leonora, away 5 months at a time, leaving wife alone to face hardships. He was still away when wheat ripened. As it

was their flour and seed for next year she went with 2 little daughter each day cutting off heads of wheat with scissors, putting them in cardboard box. Finally gathered the 50 acres and stored it safely ready for threshing when husband returned. Grain in those days was reaped and put in winnow for threshing. Her 3 brothers with widowed mother took up land nearby shortly afterwards and helped her. Reared 5 daughters and 2 sons. Christmas time all settlers gathered at her home. She worked hard for the community.

Nearest store and railway was at Mingenew, 40 miles with horse and cart. In 1917 she married, reared 2 children. Wife of Michael White of “Iron Hill”, Northam, where he farmed successfully for 25 years; he was also contract carter between Northam and Southern Cross at outbreak of Coolgardie Goldfields. He was a member of Agricultural Society and the race club. His wife helped him in all his activities. Died age 93 years.

When she came to Perth late 1930s, she sat for some years in the Married Womens’ court and was president of the Women Justices for some years.

Wilhelm, Emma 26 July 1878 Nee Richardson. Born Albany. Married at an early age and settled in Woodanilling district, with her husband pioneered the district. 9 children of the marriage. After a long illness, she died aged 71 years.

Williams, Hilda Annie 21 May 1880 Nee Jolly. Born at Moonta, SA. Married 1905 at home of her sister, Mrs Gilbert Hodges., then at Northam. They took up farming at Koomerkine, house was timber and bags. Goomalling was 25 miles away, nearest town where stores had to be bought, travelling by horse and buggy. She boarded 1st school teacher and all church services were held in her home. 6 children of the marriage.

Williams, Hilda Lydia Nee Bradtke. Went to Quelagetting, north-east of Meckering in 1906 as 1st white woman. Her first home was a gimlet hut and she did not see another white woman for 18 months.

(1st marriage – Mrs Hughes). Lost her 1st husband in SA. Left on farm with 5 children, youngest 2 years. Decided to sell up and settle in WA 1901. Here she met and married Henry Ch. Willmott and moved to Pingelly where they had taken up land in 1903. They started their home on virgin bush. She acted as midwife to neighbours and kept open house for new arrivals in district. Died aged 85 years.

Willox, Mrs Pioneer of Wialki, Ningham, location 3129, about 1928. First president of Wialki CWA 1934.

Wills, Annie Beatrice Nee Coatham. Married in her parents’ home Mt Lawley, went straight to ‘The Nook’ farm, 15 miles west of Brookton. 2-room home-made of mud bats, cooked in open with piano case to shield fire from wind. Transport was horse and cart. 4 children. Ears of wheat were plucked by hand and ground by mincer for porridge – kangaroo meat. Food was home-made bread and dripping. Once a week Mrs Wills walked 3 miles to Dale river to do washing. Supervised children’s correspondence lessons, helped husband harness team each morning, unharness at night. Never had holiday until she went to live in Brookton 5 May 1955, then aged 63 years.

Wilson, Janet Stevens Nee Fleming. Came to WA from England 1910. A teacher by profession, taught in England and in numerous country schools in WA until 1931.

Wilson, Margaretta Jane Arrived in WA from Scotland 1912, taught at Albany 2 years then transferred to Collie 1914, taught at Collie until her retirement in 1944. A member of CWA at least 41 years. Took a keen interest in community affairs.

Wilson, Marian Caroline Nee Kekwick. Pioneered virgin land 1913, acquired by her husband 1911 in Dalwallinu area. Built up prosperous farm, was a pioneer in every sense of the word. A foundation member of St Peters church, East Fremantle, and president of Mothers’ Union there. Eldest child of W.D. Kekwick, second in command of John McDougall & Stuart expedition, Adelaide to Darwin 1862.

Wilson, Sarah Nee McGuire. Arrived WA about 1840. Married Alexander Wilson. Managed a furniture and interior decorating factory her husband started. 9 children of the marriage, 2 died in infancy. Lived in St Georges Terrace and later built a house in Condon Street, Claremont.

Wilson, Susannah Honoria

Wife of Thomas Charles Wilson of Caversham house, Guildford. Mother of 3 sons and 3 daughters. Taught at Kanowna early years. Held office of State president women’s auxiliary 6 years, state organiser, vice president and state president of CWA, and editor ‘The Countryman’ magazine for 11 years.

Windsor, Lucy Ellen Nee Lyons. Settled in Dowerin Lakes area 1903, only transport was horse and buggy, nearest town Goomalling, nearest neighbours 14 miles away. Assisted with carting of stone for their 9-roomed house. A regular worshipper at local Methodist Church. 6 children.

Winn, Mrs Wife of one of the earliest railway employees to come to Cunderdin. Arriving in the early period before 1900, these women, like Mrs Winn, endured great hardships to be with their husbands and played no small part in the development of the thriving township that is Cunderdin today.

Winnecke, Nellie Joy Went to Badgebup district October 1910.

Winner, Mrs Nee Sprunt. Came to live at Bodallin where Mr Winner was maintenance worker on Goldfields Water supply pipeline. Also owned and lived on small homestead block at Bodallin. She took on duties of postmistress in her own home, earliest post box was chaff bag hung at her front door. She gave outstanding service to the small community until official PO was erected. Soon after PO opened, Mr Winner died, family moved away from district.

Wisbey, Ada Came to Nyabing with her husband and 2 children 1912 and pioneered a property 1 mile from township. No clearing or house on property. Had another child in 1914.

Wise, Mrs Mr & Mrs Wise lived on virgin farm 20 miles north of Bodallin, lost everything when fire swept through, then moved by Agricultural Bank to farm named ‘Broadview’, 4 miles from township. A keen gardener, she grew most of the vegetables for family as well as lovely flower garden and many grape vines. Educated her daughter entirely by correspondence lessons.

Withnell, Emma 1841 1928 Born Beverley, married at Guildford 1860, went to Roebourne 1864. Known in North West as mother of medicine. Mother of 10 children. After an adventurous life in the North, the family came to Perth for a holiday, first in 14 years. Their home was name Mt Welcome at Roebourne. Later lived 50 miles east on Sherlock River. Died aged 87 year and with her husband is buried at Guildford.

1964 Descendant of the Morrells, founders of Northam, and the Leeders, founders of Leederville. Educated at Miss Carleton’s Ladies School, Northam and learned music from Sr Gertrude. Lived with her parents at Sylverton Farm, Jennapullin. After her marriage she lived in Northam. Died aged 80 years, leaving 7 children, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Woods, Mary Elizabeth Known as Molly. Wife of Captain James Woods. First woman to receive a pilot’s licence July 1930, graduate of WA Airways formed by Major Norman Brearley. She flew a DH60, also did a lot of flying with her husband. She was given the honour of flying in a Gypsy Moth to foothills of Darling Ranges to escort Amy Johnston to Maylands Aerodrome.

Woods, Priscilla Sara 1882 Born South Australia. Journeyed to Southern Cross as a young woman where she met and married Harold Woods. They came to Dowerin 1906, took up virgin land, house was of hessian and bush poles. Worked side by side with her husband to establish the farm. Goomalling nearest town 30 miles where she went for supplies in a spring cart, taking 2 days. Reared family of 2 sons and 3 daughters.

Worton, Annie Elizabeth 1886 Nee Jones. Wife of James Worton. Arrived as assisted migrant from England 1911, married in May the same year and travelled to Bolgart where they worked on the land. After a year or two went to Toodyay ad resided there until 1914, then later to Northam and Warralakin. Lived in tents and underwent many hardships.

Wright, Amelia 30 September 1885

Wife of W. Wright. Born Epping, Essex, England. Husband came out to WA December 1911, Amelia followed July 1912 on SS Ajana with 4 children under 5 years. Lived in camp at Yilimining. He worked on dam for 6 months, later moved to Mt Barker and too up 60 acres, camped, cleared and fenced it together. Amelia took up further 160 acres, after 2 years had pre-cut cottage sent from Perth. Now had family of 8 children. Mr Wright became bankrupt, an unpopular move as family were honest, hard workers. Amelia’s block sold to pay off debts. Left for Maddington, leaving 58 acres of orchard. Took up 3 acres of poultry farm. Husband died 1939, Amelia stayed on until 1944 then moved to Bentley.

Wright, Frances Esther 1870 1950 Wife of Robert Henry Wright. Born Albany. Appointed first head mistress Mt Barker school, opened 1893 with 30 pupils. 1894 married first postmaster at Mt Barker. She worked hard for community, especially young people. 1897 took up virgin land 3 miles from town, property still farmed by a son. First woman to act at Church of England synod in Groperland, chosen to represent home parish in Church parliament 1924. Due to her that idea of building church was

mooted – foundation stone laid by her October 1900. Died Mt Barker aged 80 years.

Founder of the first dramatic group in Narembeen district, wrote entire script for first production. Was 3rd school teacher and played a prominent part in all district activities up to the present time.

Yewers, Adela Maud Arrived at Merkanooka on a farm August 1910 after travelling by train to Mingenew. For stores they had to travel by horse and cart to Mingenew 30 miles away.

Yewers, Elizabeth Mabel Came to WA 1897 aged 16 years. Joined Education Department as pupil teacher 1907, took home science course during teaching on staff Plympton School, East Fremantle. Taught home science at Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Geraldton centres 1914-1922. Opened first classes of home science in those centres, also with 4 teachers under Miss Wylie’s leadership compiled “Golden Wattle” cook book. Made inspector and organiser of home science 1923 and held that position until retirement 1944. Always enthusiastic and practical in her work.
