SRI LANKA
PERAHERA FESTIVAL
The island of Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, has been regarded by travellers as the Jewel of the Indian Ocean. Approximately the size of Tasmania, the island is situated just north of the equator and offers visitors a rich variety of culture, scenery and wildlife. The country is renowned for its palm-fringed
thbeaches, ruins dating back to the 4 century BC, tea plantations and exotic mountain scenery, making it an ideal honeymoon destination. Famous for its large variety of curries and other cuisines, the country also produces many tropical fruits. Sri Lanka is famous for its gemstones, including rubies and sapphires, and more than 10,000 people are employed in the jewellery manufacturing industry.
The Perahera Festival, which is regarded as Asia's greatest pageant, has been celebrated since 310AD on the first full moon in August. During the Festival, which commemorates the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, more than 80 colourfully decorated elephants are paraded through the streets of Kandy.
Journeys Worldwide obtains excellent seats to view the procession, which takes place at night.
