1Research-based principles for designPower Point presentation
Educational psychologist, Richard Mayer, posits a theory of multimedia learning wherein he finds seven research-based principles for design.
• Students learn better 1. from words and pictures than from words alone (Multimedia
Principle)2. when corresponding words and pictures are presented near
rather than far from each other on the page or screen (Special Contiguity Principle)
3. when corresponding words and pictures are presented simultaneously rather than successively (Temporal Contiguity Principle)
Mayer, R. (2001). Multimedia Learning. Cambridge University Press. Rodriguez, R. (2005) Theories Into Practice with Blackboard ONLINE, University of
La Verne.

Eyes are attracted to great contrast●Contrast should fit information relevance●Important information should have high contrast
I use color or/and color
●Less relevant details should have lower contrast
Context should be hierarchical●Group related contexts● More details should be indented

present concepts visually with more diagrams than any others

Our eyes are attracted to:●Size●Contrast●Texture●Depth●Motion
To control focus, I use:●Larger size●Greater contrast●Different color●Hierarchy
●Should be easy to ignore lower levels as familiarity increases●Sometimes animation

5Power Point presentation
Addition to that I introduce1. Hierarchy of bullets
Nested bulleted and numbered lists Level 1 item 1
– Level 2 item 1 – Level 2 item 2
Level 1 item 2 1. Level 2 item 1 2. Level 2 item 2
Higher level more general info Lower level more specific info
2. Key words in red3. Important words in bold4. Ability to learn from slides
Example: Distributed Computing
Work distributed over networks N-Tier applications
– Split parts of applications over numerous computers1. User interface2. Business-logic processing3. Database
– Different parts interact when application runs

Summary: Requirements for slides
slides should have a tutorial value the student should be able to learn from slides
concepts should be presented as much as possible visually using diagrams, pictures etc.
corresponding words and pictures should be presented simultaneously rather than successively
context should be hierarchical slides should include nested bulleted or have numbered lists
Higher level more general info Lower level more specific info
contrast should fit information relevance key words should be presented in different color(s)
and in bold
