Join the Cal Poly Symphony in an exploration of dance across the historical spectrum. Enjoy both the intimate music of Claude Debussy and Howard Hanson, featuring guest artists Marcia Dickstein, harp, and Suzanne Duffy, flute, as well as the unbridled exuberance of Arturo Márquez’ “Danzon No. 2.”

WINTER CONCERT: STUDENT SOLOIST SHOWCASESunday, March 3, 2019 3 p.m., Harold J. Miossi Hall

Every year, the symphony holds auditions for student soloists of any major. The prize for several of them is a performance with the symphony! Come hear this year’s winners and celebrate musical talent from across the university.

SPRING CONCERT – FATE: TCHAIKOVSKY 4Saturday, June 8, 2019 8 p.m., Harold J. Miossi Hall

“Our symphony progresses.” Such were the words that Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote in 1877 to Nadezhda Filaretovna von Meck. Madame von Meck, as she is often known, idolized Tchaikovsky’s music, supported him for years, shared a very personal and prolific correspondence with him and insisted that they never meet. She also very much wanted to know what “their” symphony was about.

In a rare departure, Tchaikovsky wrote to her a full explanation of the meaning of his fourth symphony, centered on the idea of

“Fate, the decisive force which prevents our hopes of happiness from being realized …” Come join the symphony as it traces the crushing depths of despair and passionate moments of hope in Tchaikovsky’s epic musical struggle.

• Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36• Additional works

SPRING CONCERT: COLOR OF SOUNDSunday, June 9, 2019 3 p.m., Harold J. Miossi Hall

We encounter wave behavior through numerous sensory experiences including sight, touch and aural experiences. Music has been described as the “transfer of energy,” and in live performances, the energy moves in waves from the stage to the audience to excite not only the senses, but also the emotions. The Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble investigate the relationship between spectra of music and visual color through works by James Stephenson and Michael Colgrass.

NEW DIRECTOR OF BANDSEffective September 2018, Christopher J. Woodruff

will be Cal Poly’s new director of bands. He previously served as associate director.

The University Jazz Bands combine the professionalism of working jazz bands with the rigor of cutting-edge repertoire. In addition to the concerts in the Performing Arts Center’s Miossi Hall and Spanos Theatre, the University Jazz Bands perform regularly at the Jubilee by the Sea jazz festival in Pismo Beach in October, the Strawberry Festival in Arroyo Grande in May, various swing dances and other concerts in the community.

Pieces for the concerts can draw from almost any source — including genres such as cartoon music, Ethiopian pop music, rock, rhythm and blues, and swing — by groups such as Led Zeppelin and Tower of Power, past jazz masters and rising new musicians, as well as the most advanced modern big band compositions, often as recorded and performed by the original artists.
