Here’s What We’re Learning!

Grade 1

Kindergarten

For Literacy we are working on or reading by way of practicing fluency and learning new words and spelling

rules. We are also working on learning our long vowels. In grade one we are also working on writing sentences;

that begin with capitals and end with periods. We are writing a lot about penguins as we have also begun a large

unit on penguins. There is a major project that is a component of this unit.

For Math, we are finishing review with skip counting by fives and twos. We are beginning an addition and sub-

traction unit, of which simple problem solving will be a part. For addition and subtraction we will use numbers

from 1 to 20.

For Science we are beginning a unit on senses. This is a major unit of science,

and will focus on components of sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste. Our

main focus for the next while will be on sight and sound.

For Social Studies, students are finishing up their learning about rights and

responsibilities, and will begin to learn more about community as we look in

detail at concepts of rural and urban in regard to what they each look like, and

life, living, and community both in rural and urban areas.

Miss. Conrad, Mrs. Hundal, and Miss. Karim

We had a good start to second term in Kindergarten. We would like to extend thanks to our parents for helping their

children finish their homework over the winter break. Mrs. Zaseybida’s class has been focusing further on commu-

nity helpers, as well both classes have been continuing to complete their social studies puzzle pieces each month –

it has been great learning about each other! The students will continue to learn about winter, seasons, weather and

living and non-living things as a part of our literacy and science curriculum. In math this month, we will continue to

learn about sound and action patterns, 2-D shapes, colour words, and sorting objects based on a single attribute.

We have been learning Habit 3: Put First Things First in the month of January. The students learned how they can

practice this habit in their lives by understanding and setting priorities (do the most important things first), being

organized, and making and following a schedule. Work first, then play!

The Kindergarten students made a humble effort to bring joy to others and give back to the community by complet-

ing their SEVA PROJECT before the winter break. The money that we raised from the Pizza Lunch Fundraiser was

used to buy Christmas presents for a Punjabi family in need.

HAPPY NEW YEAR from,

Mrs. Zaseybida and Mrs. Parhar

Grade 2

Grade 2/3

For Literacy, we are going to focus on explanatory texts which tells readers how and why things are the way they

are, or how things work. This writing genre is similar to descriptive texts, but they give a reader more of a tech-

nical explanation or an examination of a scientific phenomenon, such as how ice makes a drink cold.

For Math, we are focusing on our addition and subtraction strategies unit; students are to develop number sense

by representing and describing numbers to 100 concretely, pictorially, and symbolically. Students are to demon-

strate an understanding of addition (limited to 1 and 2-digit numerals. Students will learn how to use personal

strategies for adding and subtracting with and without the support of manipulative materials.

For science, we are currently working on our Hot and Cold Temperature unit. In this unit the student goals are to

recognize and describe the roles of insulation in keeping things hot or cold. Students will be able to identify plac-

es where some form of insulation is used for example; clothing, refrigerator, coolers, and homes.

Our concentration for Social Studies has been on looking at various communities within Canada. Students were to

demonstrate an understanding of cultures in Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. In class, we focused on how these

communities have evolved over time. We are looking at our second unit which is based on looking at people. Stu-

dents will learn to appreciate the diversity and vastness of Canada’s land and people.

Mrs. Kaur and Ms. Gill

For Literacy, we are focussing on expanding our sentences to make them more interesting. We are also continuing to work on

organizing our writing and creating paragraphs. Once we learn how to write paragraphs, we will move on to letter writing.

For Math, we are focusing on our addition and subtraction strategies unit; students are to develop number sense by representing

and describing numbers to 100 (grade 2) and 1000 (grade 3) concretely, pictorially, and symbolically. Students are to demon-

strate an understanding of addition. Students will learn how to use personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and with-

out the support of manipulatives.

For science, in grade 2, we are currently working on our Hot and Cold Temperature unit. In this unit the student goals are to rec-

ognize and describe the roles of insulation in keeping things hot or cold. Students will be able to identify places where some

form of insulation is used for example; clothing, refrigerator, coolers, and homes. The grade 3 students will be learning about

hearing and sound. They will learn about how the ear works. They will gain some hands on knowledge when they visit Telus

Sparks Centre for a field trip.

Our concentration for Social Studies in grade 2 has been on looking at various communities within Canada. Students were to

demonstrate an understanding of cultures in Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. In class, we focused on how these communities

have evolved over time. We are looking at our second unit which is based on looking at people. Students will learn to appreciate

the diversity and vastness of Canada’s land and people. The grade 3 students will be learning about the quality of life in Ukraine

and will compare the geographical features of Canada to that of Ukraine.

In Physical Education we will continue our basketball unit.

Grade 3

Punjabi/Gurmat

After a restful and rejuvenating break, we are happy to see that the students are just as rested and excited to

learn. In Math, students are finishing up the Addition and Subtraction unit and moving onto the Multiplication

and Division unit. With the completion of their holiday homework package, students are already ahead of the

game when it comes to multiplication and division. The Khalsa School Calgary Plane is ready to return home

after a long visit to Ukraine. For Mr. Hasegawa’s social studies students, they are learning about different festi-

vals and celebrations in Ukraine as well as getting their first taste of their national dish (borsch). A few stu-

dents will admit that even though it might not look appetizing, they sure loved the taste. To wrap up our Hear-

ing and Sound unit for science, students will expand their knowledge by taking a special visit to the Telus

Spark Center on January 29. We are sure looking forward to it and hoping that this adventure will create last-

ing memories. In Literacy, students are working on their story writing. We sure can’t wait to see what kind of

interesting stories they come up with. We are kicking off the new year with a bang, but do not worry, there are

more fun and exciting things to look forward to in the near future.

Mr. Hasegawa and Mrs. Khera

Punjabi/Gurmat teachers thank all parents who have put considerate effort to help their chil-

dren completing their winter break homework. We have seen improvement in reading and

writing in those students who practice Punjabi at home. Our KG and G-1 students will be

reading and writing Punjabi alphabets and practicing letter sounds. G-1s will be working on

Sihari and Bihari matra words in February. G-2s are working on different matras according to

their capabilities. The advanced levelled G-2 students will be working on sentence structure

and next lessons in Punjabi book. The third grade students are working on different matras,

making plural words, changing genders and opposite words in Punjabi.

In Gurmat, all students will be learning pronouncing and memorizing at least 15 pauris of

Japji Sahib. Parents are requested to recite Japji Sahib everyday with their children.

KGs, G-1s and G-2s will be learning next sargams and singing shabads in Kirtan class.
