Most of us have not experienced a crisis of the magnitude of the COVID-

19 pandemic. Support and unity are the things which are keeping us

motivated in these difficult times. While the aim of The Reflection is to

keep the students and faculty up-to-date with the recent global and

domestic research in various fields, the actions undertaken by the

several departments of Jai Hind College Autonomous during this crisis

is no less than an achievement.

It is during such times that we get an opportunity to push and rise

above ourselves. With so much time on our hands, we can expand our

mind to its horizons and generate revolutionary ideas. The Reflection is

where all these revolutionary ideas can unite and inspire. Each page of

the e-newsletter speaks of the initiative, efforts, and innovation by Jai

Hind College Autonomous.

We take immense pleasure in being the area where the union of these

ideas can ensue. Given the current times, this issue is also dedicated to

all the faculty and students. They have continued to face the hardships

of life and maintain the fire within them to learn. We can learn and get

inspired by even the most minute phenomenon, and The Reflection is

where we can reflect on these.

We formed an LMS Committee of 9 teachers who are more techno-savvy to guide & problem shoot ononline teaching. We formed an SMS Committee of all our CRs & SRs to assist class & subject teachers in fine-tuning ofonline activities. We use Zoom & Google Class Room for a well-balanced approach. The use of WhatsApp by stream in-charges continues for direct communication with all students &parents. As per Govt. directives, online activities are for 3 hours daily; with a well balanced time table. There are 2 teachers in every lecture; one the subject teacher & the other a stand –by teacher to take careof disturbances due to connectivity, power etc.

'You are your only limit.'Jai Hind College Autonomous Junior College strongly believes in the above quote. Covid-19 brought us atdoors of abrupt & sudden closure of college from 21/3/2020; in the middle of exam season when we werehalfway with FY XI Annual Exams & assessment & moderation of HSC 2020 answer books.The extended periods of lock-down added to the uncertainty. But this feeling was only for a short period oftime. We teachers could sense the wind of changes & we braced up for the same.‘

'To teach is to learn.’ From as early as mid - April, we started attending webinars organized by JHC & other institutions to learnseveral skills related to presentations, preparations of digital content, conduct online classes, execute anonline assessment, organizing online events, getting acquainted with different online platforms & use ofapplications & tools. The learning process continued during the assessment & moderation of HSC answerbooks in May-June.

With the declaration of online results of FY XI in mid-June, now it was time to put all learning to good use.With the Govt. go-ahead for online teaching: learning; JHC JC was one of the first colleges in Mumbai to startit from July 1, 2020. A small step in the right direction was a big leap in future. The road ahead was long &winding, but our pace was slow & steady. We faced turbulence but we held together & manoeuvred. Thechallenges were big & tough but our resolve to give the best to the students worked as catharsis.

After completing their graduations, moststudents want to pursue further studies.A majority of these wish to enrol forprograms leading to a PhD – in institutesof repute. However, the road to thismuch-desired path is challenged byentrance exams which sieve out the verybest of the students. In order to help ourstudents, get guidance and answers totheir anxious queries, a talk “Crackingentrance exams”, was organized on 17thSeptember 2020, with the speaker beingnone other than one of our ex-studentMs Amruta Naik. Amruta is currently aSenior Research Fellow at theprestigious institute of National Centrefor Biological Sciences (NCBS),Bengaluru. She has prepared hard andwell for the various entrance exams heldthroughout the country and has faredvery well in them. The talk was an onlineinteractive session particularly for thestudents of second- and third-yearBiological Sciences at Jai Hind College.Amruta provided very effective studymethods, and tips to prepare forentrance exams and the interviews thatfollow most of these.

Choosing a career that is right foroneself is always a dilemma for mostindividuals. This dilemma is alwaysweighing heavy on our students too. Inorder to help them get some clarity intheir decision making, the Departmentof Biotechnology organized a talk “Scopeof Biotechnology and Allied Sciences” on9th October 2020, with Mr NikhilBardeskar who also happens to be one ofour students from an earlier batch.Nikhil has been working towards hisPhD degree at the National Institute forResearch in Reproductive Health(NIRRH), Mumbai. He is currentlyworking as an Editor at CrimsonInteractive Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai. Thespeaker gave a detailed idea about theopportunity, future scopes and researchareas to the students after completingtheir graduation. On the whole, it was afruitful session for the students and theyfound it very helpful.

The Physics Discussion Club (PDC) wasinitiated under the aegis of the PhysicsDepartment from 2019-20. The studentsgather once every week and one/twostudents presented using PPT a detailedoverview of a Physics-related topic(research problems/current interest).

This will be followed by a Q and Asession or an exchange of ideas orsuggestions among students. Till now,eight such sessions have been conductedduring the months of August,September, October, and November,each session lasting for one and a halfhours. The benefits of such a club aremany. Besides fostering communicationon science among and between FY, SY,and TY students, it will also enable thestudents to get acquainted with currentresearch activities happening around theglobe.

Also, in the current situation wheresocial interactions are minimal, ameeting of students sharing the samepassion of Physics can be beneficial fortheir mental well-being.

The topics that the students arepresenting are be chosen by them. Butthe quality and validity of thepresentation are approved by thefaculty-in-charge (Dr Niyaz Ahmed K C)prior to the presentation.

Since many students were interested inthis course, it has been converted into aAAA course.

Department of Life Sciences is wellknown for its research in the college.In 2019-20, our students baggedseveral prizes right from institutes likeIIT to our college’s ‘XPlore’.

This year we encouraged our studentsto write research articles. Our TYstudents Varisha Khan and JhansiBhansali have published researcharticles in scientific journals.

They both have co-authored thearticle based on the contemporarytopic titled ‘Bioinformatics ApproachOn Evolution And Phylogeny OfSARS COV-2 And Host Ace2 ProteinReceptor’ published in the journalCompendium of ‘Research Insights ofLife Science Students’.

Jaansi Bhansali wrote an informativearticle on ‘Proteomics Of Alzheimer'sDisease’ and Varisha Khan wrote aninteresting topic on ‘Sleep Paralysis-Supernatural or Science’ in the samejournal. All three articles were wellreceived by the scientific fraternity.

Department of Botany is one of theoldest and only departments with allstaff members with PhD and thelaboratory recognised for M.Sc. (byresearch) and PhD. The staff membersand students are motivated to take upresearch projects in various inter andintra-disciplinary subjects. In 2018 –2019 our students bagged several prizesincluding a silver medal in Avishkar, aclean sweep in undergraduate categoryat an international conference etc.

The staff members help students to notonly work on research projects butencourage them to participate in variouscompetitions, conferences etc. Threestudents of 2019 – 2020 batch havealready written a research paper on“Larvicidal activity of essential oil frombottlebrush plant” which iscommunicated for publication.

We also ensure our students have all-round development and to achieve thesame, A lecture on “Nature Driven LifeJourney” was held by Department ofBotany and Microbiology in associationwith Nature Club, Jai Hind College on22nd September 2020.

Other than these activities, the staffmembers also keep updating their skillsby attending various courses, webinars,conferences etc.

Dr Sangeeta Godbole was invited atInstitute of Science as an external subjectexpert for conducting online vivas forstudents desirous to submit the researchproposals for pursuing PhD programme.

Dr Devangi Chachad has been selected asa member, Board of studies at K.C.College, HSNC University.

Dr Archana Ashtekar was an integral partof organizing the first-ever onlineteacher’s day celebration in Jai HindCollege.

Ms Prathma Nemane facilitated the“Wellness Wellbeing through TibetanSinging Bowls” workshop on 21st August2020. She taught meditation and gave alive demonstration of healing modalitythrough Tibetan Singing bowls. Sheimparted knowledge of understandingthe dimensions of wellness andtechniques to improve wellbeing. On 25th August 2020, Ms ZennobiiaEdulkaka conducted the “Philosophy ofPythagorean Numbers'' workshop whereshe gave a detailed introduction toPythagorean Numbers forunderstanding and exploring ourmission through tapping into our lifepath numbers. Our Board of Studies member andalumnus Ms Juthika Mehta took a livelyand highly interactive guest lecture titled“Philosophy – The Bridge to the World”on 10th September 2020. She coveredthemes such as the role of philosophy invarious dimensions with specialreference to the sports.Alumnus Ms. Janki Mehta conducted aworkshop on 11th September 2020 titled“Building Resilience Through Mind,Body and Spirit” in collaboration withRotaract club of Jai Hind College (RCJC)

This workshop emphasized on themeaning of resilience and itsimportance, finding an internal anchorand taught students how to buildresilience for a balanced life. National Service Scheme (NSS) andDepartment of Philosophy collaboratedfor a workshop titled “Yoga for OnlineTeaching and Learning” which wasfacilitated by Ms. Simmin Bawa on 19thSeptember 2020. Another fun and healthy workshop titled“Laughter Yoga workshop” held on 10thOctober 2020 conducted by Ms. SimminBawa and the NSS. This workshopexplored the healthy connectionbetween laughter and yoga.

The History department has beenresolutely striving towards providingholistic education with an emphasis onhoning reading and research skills of itsstudents. They were motivated to enrolfor value-added online courses that willendow a platform for aninterdisciplinary approach towardshumanities, develop communicationskills and facilitate market placement.

The faculty has managed to completeFDP’s, Seminars, Workshops, andConferences that assist in the teaching-learning process, evaluation techniquesand research skills. The faculty has alsosuccessfully completed the courses itenrolled for Teaching was resumedthrough Google Meet and regularreading material, PPTs and referencesare being shared with students.

Online revision lectures for TYBA Batch2019-2020 and for students appearingfor ATKT exams was conducted. 2019-20 major batch student YuktaHatiramani was invited by Dr ArchanaMishra to teach the present SYBAHistory students blogging. TheSYBAstudents wrote blogs as part oftheir CA2 for the History Paper III-EarlyIndian History (Stone Age c. to 326 B.C).

The Students of SYBA FC (B) Divisionmade videos on socially vulnerablegroups during Covid-19 as instructed byDr Archana Mishra in order to createawareness regarding the impact of theCoronavirus.

.For the Students of FYBCOM (B)division Mrs Safina Rakhangi organizedan online debate on 20th October 2020The two debating groups presented theirviews on “Should Reservation System beabolished in India? followed by aninteractive session. The students got aninsight into the topic. Mrs SafinaRakhangi has been appointed as theMember (Ag) Ad-hoc Board of Studies inthe subject of Foundation Course underthe Faculty of Humanities in H.S.N.CUniversity. She attended the BOSmeeting on 12th October 2020 to discussand approve the syllabus. She wasappointed as a Rapporteur for theCapacity-building Workshop forTeachers held on 10th November 2020.

With the advent of the new Academicsession, there was a shift from offline toonline teaching and evaluation. Hence,with a view to providing a wholesomeonline learning experience, theDepartment organized several webinarsand virtual activities to make teaching &learning meaningful, enriching andengaging for the students. On 17th August 2020, a webinar wasorganized on ‘Fake News & ArtificialIntelligence: Threat to Democracy’. Thespeaker was Harini Calamur, a journalistby profession. Her talk was so thought-provoking that it nudged the students todwell deep into the issues pertaining toFake News. Another webinar was organized on 22ndAugust on ‘An Introduction to PublicPolicy’ by Ms. Nanadini Naik from St.Xavier’s College.

It was soon followed by a virtual talk on29th August 2020 on ‘The Group,Systems and Elite Theories of PublicPolicy’ by Ms. Vandita Morarka, CEO of“One Future Collective”. Ms. VanditaMorarka delivered another onlinelecture on 10th September 2020 on“Games, Institutional and Incrementaltheories”. Yet another much-appreciatedwebinar was organized on “Feminism”on 16th October 2020 by Ms. AanchalJain. She is an activist, socialentrepreneur, actor, director, andfacilitator working at the intersection ofgender, theatre, sexuality, mental health,and art. She is the founder of the“Thought Project”. Soon then on 24thOctober 2020, the Departmentcelebrated “United Nations at 75”. Dr.Uttara Sahasrabuddhe, Head, Dept ofCivics & Politics, University of Mumbaidelivered a virtual talk on ‘UnitedNations at 75’. It was followed by adebate and a quiz competition. Thedebate was centred around the theme“The Security Council will perishwithout Reforms - For or Against themotion.” The quiz was on the UnitedNations and its functionality. Thisactivity helped the students to learn andshowcase their knowledge.

Out of the many clubs within ourdepartment, ConCourse focuses onfulfilling the point to give our studentscontrol over all the other aspects to leada business. ConCourse was the firstsession for this academic year thatwitnessed all the three batches cometogether to attend a unique session onsecularism and communal harmony byMr Ram Puniyani.

He is a former professor of biomedicalengineering and former senior medicalofficer affiliated with the Indian Instituteof Technology Bombay for over 27years. On 23rd October 2020,ConCourse organized a session with MrSachin Dedhia: an independentcybercrime investigator whoseoccupational and technical expertise hasbeen of use to the cyber cell departmentof the Mumbai police.

ConCourse session centred around thetopic of career guidance with Ms VibhaKagzi. With a plethora of achievementsin her repertoire, she is best known forauthoring the book “Break the MBACode” and is the CEO & founder ofReachIvy.com. A Harvard alum, sheguided the students through theintimidating process of applying for atop-tier college.

Endeavour aims at nurturing acommunity of writers. It is a researchclub which provides a platform forexceptional and unique minds to puttheir matter to work. In difficult times,where most of the people gave up,endeavour decided to inspire thestudents by hosting interviews withsuccessful alumni.

These sessions started with ShaunakMajumder, BFM’18, who shared hissuccess story, his journey in college andhis current achievements. The nextsession was taken over by Gargi Mishra,the winner of various nationallyestablished research competitions. The editorial organised a session aboutwhat it truly stands for, under theguidance of Ms Debjani Banerjee, anavid researcher who has publishedpapers at Oxford, AACSB, Edinburgh,and the first PAN IIT conference inmanagement.

The Financial Cell of Jai Hind Collegepredominantly works to bridge the ever-widening gap between the practical andthe theoretical worlds of finance.

Make the Move was a virtual Mock Stockevent organised by The Financial Cell,the aim of this event was to make surethe participants attain a realistic feel ofinvesting in the stock market. Lotto wasthe second event of The Financial Cellwhich took place via WhatsApp.

This event involved the participants in amood-boosting game of financialhousie. Another enticing event wasconducted, the Treasure Hunt. In thisknowledge and fun-filled event, theparticipants were required to completethe hunt within a stipulated amount oftime.

Bazaar focuses on giving the departmentstudents one platform that would keepthem up to date with the current affairsincorporated in the financial industry asa whole. It came up with nearly 14 to 15issues. All the issues revolving aroundfinancial literacy, Atma Nirbhar Bharat,markets during the lockdown, petrolrally, the impact of the current situationon India's top 10 businesses and manymore.

A monthly newsletter, initiated by theDepartment of BAF, BBI & BFM. Themain purpose of the newsletter is tohighlight the extensive efforts and therelentless efforts that the students of ourdepartment have put in order to giveopportunities even in the most difficulttimes.

They have come up with a new sectioncalled “Quarantine Diaries” where theyacknowledge the students of ourdepartment who have found ways to usethis time efficiently by participating in anumber of competitions.

The Societal Bridge aims to bridge thedistance between the individual studentsand their batch mates and to help peopleknow more about their peers and have awonderful time at Jai Hind.

Activities conducted by the societalbridge were as under:1. Hello World – Introductory sessionwith the batch of 2023.2. Fish Bond – A hilarious game to knoweach other better. 3. Being Beyond Brainy – a virtual fest incooperation with all the clubs of thedepartment combined.

She then explained the purposes ofreviewing the literature, in that shementioned that reviewing the literaturehelps us to know the methodologies thathave been used, main ideas, conclusions,theories, the establishment ofsimilarities and differences behind theproject are quite visible after reviewingthe literature.

She further explained the qualities of agood review paper, one of the qualities isthat it should clarify the state ofknowledge. While writing a review it isvery important to evaluate the sources.

The sources can be evaluated based onR.E.V.I.E.W. R stands for relevance, Estands for expertise, V stands forviewpoint, I stands for the intendedaudience, E stands for evidence and Wstands for when published. The webinarwas very informative, it gave students aclear picture of how to write a reviewarticle.

The new norm in scientific research”was a webinar organized under StarCollege scheme initiated by Scienceclub, Jai Hind College, on 21st October2020, to address young minds andquench their thirst for research in “thenew normal” which the world is nowsubjected to consequent to COVID -19.

Dr Shobha Udipi guided buddingresearchers with her vast knowledge andenormous experience. She has 96publications on her name in variouspeer-reviewed and reputed national andinternational journals. She hascontributed to chapters in almost 9books and has authored almost 5 books.She has tremendous experience as headof research projects both internationaland national level.

She had tremendous experiences underher name. She started her talk with abrief introduction on what are reviews.Review articles are papers that compile,summarize, critique and synthesizeavailable information on the topic. Shehelped students understand how to writea review article and how to collate andbring all the information together. Sheexplained the difference between theliterature review and reviewing theliterature.

On 15th Sept, Science Orientation at4 pm. On 16th Sept, organized an ArtsOrientation. On 19th Sept had a session bySimmin ma’am on 'Yoga and onlineteaching at 1 pm. On 21st September Organised GroupDiscussion from 4 pm to 5 pm forFirst-year NSS volunteers.

NSS organised several workshops,ranging from meditation sessions tocelebrating certain important days.

Online Teaching: SYJC XII onlineteaching began on July 1 and is going onsmoothly. In fact, end-October has seen50% of syllabus in the curriculum iscompleted by teachers.

The continuous online teaching for thelast 4 months & one week has instilledconfidence in students & parents aboutthe commitment of JHC JC towards ourstudents

FY XI Online Admission:

a) Open Merit List was announced on30/8/2020; JHC had record-breakingcut-offs with both Commerce & Arts at92.6% & Science at 89.6%.65% of totalstudents allotted in Science & 50% oftotal students allotted in Commerceopted for JHC as the first prioritycollege.

b) Minority Quota admission have beenon right from mid-august & JHC hasreceived good response from studentsesp. in Commerce where more than 2/3rd of total minority seats filled so far.

3. Teachers’ Training: Maharashtra StateBoard & SCERT organized onlinetraining for teachers in all subjects of thecurriculum of SY XII was held from29/10-4/11 & attended by every teacherof JHC JC.

The response from students has alsobeen very encouraging and all theirsuggestions have been implemented forthe online teaching process.

Online learning was a new and uniqueexperience. I was intrigued by thenumber of effort teachers put in to makeit as interesting as possible and teach usonline which was exceptional. I am veryfortunate to have been a part of thisamazing college! - Vaagish Sharma,Commerce
