J-04 WEIGH LOSS OF OIL AND ASPHALT (THICK FILM TEST)

    (PA030476)

    (AASHTO T4782)

    (ASTM D680)

    I. PURPOSE

The purpose of this experiment is to determine weigh loss of oil and asphalt with heating and

certain thickness, the result are presented as comparison of its original weigh.

    II. TOOLS

    i. Termometer

    ii.

    Oven that are equipped:

    a. Heat adjuster until (1801)0C.

    b. Metal dish 25 cm in diameter, hangs in the oven on the vertical axis and

rotates at a speed of 5 to 6 rounds per minute.

    iii. Cup

iv. Metal or glass cylindrical, with a flat bottom in the size: diameter 55 mm and height

    35 mm.

    v.

Weighing scale analytic, dengan kapasitas (0,001 200) grams.

    III. SPECIMENT

    a. Preparation. Mixed the sample of oil and asphalt then heated but make sure mixture

    are fuly blended.

    b.

Pour sample about (500,5) gram inside cup after its temperature had cooled down

and weigh it with accuracy of 0.01 gram

    c.

Specimen need to free from water.

    IV. PROCEDURE

    a. Placing the test substance on the plate after the oven reaches temperature (163 1) 0

    C.

    b. Install thermometer on the stand that is located at a distance of 1.9 cm from the edge

of the dish with the tip of 6 mm above the dish.

    c.

Taking a test specimen of the oven after 5 hours to 5 hours 15 minutes.

    VI. ANALYSIS

    a. Experiment analysis

Before the experiment is carried out, we gather ourself at the property material

laboratory to prepare our specimen. Then, we prepare all the tools that includes

thermometer, an oven, cup, cylinder and weighing scale. Firstly, we are going to mix

all the specimen by blending them till they are evenly mixed. Specimen are to be

placed at cup for about (500,5) gram and after it has been left colded weigh it for

about 0.01 gram accuracy (A). After weighing it we obtain specimen for about 38.5

gram. This specimen are used for the penetration test first before we proceed to

heating it inside the oven till 163 Co. The weigh of the specimen is about 38.3 gram

after it had been heated in the oven for more than 5 hour long.

    b.

    Data Analysis

The result of this experiment that is obtain is the weigh the specimen after and before

it has been subjected to heating. The weigh before heating is 38.5 gram and the weigh

of the experiment after the specimen had been heated is 38.3 gram. With this result

we could also determine the percentage of weigh loss in refer to its original weigh

    c. Error Analysis

Mixing error. Students might do some mistakes in mixing the as mixture must

be perfectly blended to avoid air void.

Estimation and Roundoff error We did not follow the actual heating temperature and time, as we may heat the

    specimen for too long.

    VII. CONCLUSION

There is about 0.519% of weigh loss
