Objective:TodesignanddemonstrateaGUIfordevice(s)inasmarthouse’smediaroom.Thede-signshouldhavebroaduserappealfromastandpointofusefullness,intuativeoperationandcompellingvisuals.
Goal:Ourmaingoalwastosimplifytheinteractionsrequiredinanentertainmentroom.Oursecondarygoalsweretofreespaceintheroomandmaketheroommoreflexibletouserneeds.Toopenuptheroomweneededtoremoveclutterandobjectsthatwerenotintegraltotheroomasawhole.Toincreasetheflexibilityoftheroomwewantedtoaddfunctionalitythatwouldallowuserstoacomplishtaskstheywerealreadydoinginenter-tainmentroomsbyutilizingoursystem.Ratherthanbringinginexternalmeansoftaskcompletion.

OnethingInoticedwasthatwhenwewouldcomebacktomyapartmentfromgoingtothestoreortoseeamoviewewouldopenthedoor.ThenbecautiousbecauseIhaveacatanditispitchblackintheroom.Whoeverenteredfirstwouldtrytoreacharoundthecornertohitthelightswitchwhiletheotherpersontriedtoshutthedoorbeforemycatranoutorgotsteppedon.IfthelightswouldhavejustcomeonwhensheorIenteredtheroomwewouldn’thavetostumbleforfiveminutes.
Theimmediategoalwastryingtoseewithoutinjuringherself.Thelongtermgoalwastryingtogettoapointofrelaxation.Theactionstakenwereherusingthekeytoopenmydoor,thencautiouslysteppinginside,followedbystumblingaroundthecornertofindalightswitch.

AnotherthingInoticedwasthatunlikeinamovietheaterwhereifyouneedtogotothebathroomyoucan’tpausethemovieinthetheater,youcaninahouse.Insteadofpausingtheshowormovieshewaswatchingshewouldjustgetupandgodoit.Thenwhenshegotbackshewouldaskmetorewindit.ThatcouldhavebeenbecauseIwasthereandsheexpectedmetopauseit,butitneedstobemoreintui-tive.ItneedstoalmostseemasiftheGUIknowsyouleftthearea.
Theimmediategoalwastodosomethingotherthanusingtheentertainmentsystem.Thelongtermgoalwastobeabletocontinuewatchingitwithoutmissinganything.Theactionsweregettingupfromchair,walkingtokitchen,bathroom,computer,etc.Thencomingbacktoentertainmentareaandaskingto
rewinditorwhyIdidn’tpauseit.
Remotes
EverytimemygirlfriendwantedtoturnontheTelevisionandCableBox,therewasalwaysanordealoverwhatbuttonstopressinwhatorder.Shewouldoftenjusthitpoweronmycableremotebutitisn’tsettoturnontheTVtooorshewouldhitthebuttonsbutinthewrongordernotturningiton.Itiscon-fusingtoeveryonewhentherearethreeremotes;onethatdoeseverything,onethatdoessomethings,andonethatisuseless.TheGUIshouldhelpnarrowitdowntotheonethatdoeseverythingremote.
TheimmediategoalwastoturnontheTVandCableBox.ThelongtermgoalwastoactuallywatchTV.Theactionstakenweresittingdown,pickinguptheremotes,pushingTV,thenpower,thencable,then
power.
Sleeping
AnotherthingInoticedwasthatIwouldbeonthecomputer;whichisprobablyabout6feetawayfrommyfuton,butfacingawayfromit,andIwouldturnaroundandshewouldbylyingthere.SoIwouldgetupandwalkoverandshewouldbeasleep.However,theTelevisionwouldstillbeloud,oratleastasloudasitshouldbeifsomeonewasactuallywatchingit.SotheGUIshouldhavesomewayofdetectingifpeopleareasleeporactuallyusingthemediadevices.
Theimmediategoalwasresting,checkingonsomeone.Thelongtermgoalwasfallingasleep,turningdownTelevision.Theactionstepswerelayingdownandpassingout.Alsolookingbehindmyself,get-tingup,lookingtocheckongirlfriend,turningdownTV.

Throughmyethnographicresearchthreemainthemescameupthatplayedamajorroleinshapingthisprojectstroage,clutter,remotesandinstallation.
Storage Problems: Inmyhouse’sentertainmentroomthereisamassivestorageproblem.Thereisanentertainmentconsoleandalarge9footcubedstoragetablethatisfullofunusedmoviesandwhateverelsemightbehidinginthere.
Clutter: Thereisalsoaproblemofunusedorunwantedthingstakingupspacewhichcouldbeusedforsomethingelse.Thisincludesanumberofremotesandisinsomewaysrelatedtothestorageproblemsfoundintheroom.
Remotes and installation: Oneofthebigproblemsistheremotecrisis.Theroomhasthreeremotesthatalldomuchthesamething.Oneforthetelevisionandonlyusedtochangesourceinput.Oneforourolderaudiosystem,andoneforcable.Thereisalsoaninstallationproblemthatariseswhenanewdeviceneedstobeaddedtothesystem.Cablesfromdifferentdeviceschaintheoncemodularcabinetstogetherandareatriskofbreakingwhenanythingismoved.

Audio & Video Selector Therearetoomanymediaplayersandgameplayersinmymediaroom,itisverycumbersometoconversion.Ifmyfamilymemberwantstouseamediaplayerorvideogame,theyonlyusethe“Audioandvideoselector”totransformbetweenmediaplayerandvideogame.
TheAudioandvideoselectorhasfivebuttonstoonnectwitheachmediadevice,althoughitiseasytouseaudioandvideoselector,itcanbehardtoremembereachbutton.Ifyouwantusesomemediaplayer,youmusttryeachbuttonuntilyoufindtherightone.

Numerous Remotes Whileoneremotecansometimesbeconfusingenoughasitis,whenpeoplehavemultipleelectrnicstheyalsotendtohavealotmoreremotes.Thiscancausesomeconfusionwhenitcomestofindingtheremoteneededtoaccomplishyourtask.Thisisexpeciallysowhenyouhavemorethanoneremotethathaschannelorvolumecontrols,suchaswhenyouhaveacableboxorevendvdcontrol.
Multi Tasking Inoticedthatunlesstheysatdowntowatchamovie,peoplewouldmultitaskanddoanumberofdifferentactivities.Peoplewouldwatchtv,readabook,checktheiremail,socialize,andeventrytogetsomeworkdone.Whilethesetaskswouldn’tdirectlyinterferewitheachother,itwasinconvenianttogetupandfindthelaptoporgotothefilingcainettogetthepaperwork.
Thermostat Therewerealsoafewinstancewheretherewasaneedtochangethetemperature.Unfortunalyethethermostatwasaconsiderabledistanceaway,makinganyatmoshpericcontrolachore.

Overview
Wewillbeutilizingkeyfeaturesofthedifferenttechnologiesweresearched.TheIdeaoriginallywastodosomethingverymuchlikethelogitechremote,justmorestreamlined.Eventuallyhowevertheideasgrewintosomethingthatasimpleremotecouldnothandle.TouchlightisaveryinterestingtechnologyandthebackbonetotheMasssystem.ByusingitwehavedesignedaGUIthatisveryaccurateinit’sgesturebasedinteractions;becausetheTouchlightisbothatouchscreenandacamera.Wewillhaveeverywallusingthistechnologymakingiteasytopinpointgesturesbyseeingnotonlywhattheyaredoing;buttheangle,direction,andintensityatwhichuserswillgesture.Itwillalsoplayabigroleinallowingmulitpleuserstousethesystemsimultaneously;sinceitcanseewhoisusingthesystemandwheretheyareusingitonthewalls.
