Small, medium and large businesses are encouraged to attend the workshop and receive instruction on how to apply for this new tax credit program available from the state of California. Come and learn how your business can apply for millions in available new tax credits. The workshop and the program are both free and available to businesses of all sizes. What is the California Competes Tax Credit? The California Competes Tax Credit is an income tax credit available to businesses that want to locate in California or stay and grow in California. Tax credit agreements will be negotiated by GO-Biz and approved by a statutorily created "California Competes Tax Credit Committee," consisting of the State Treasurer, the Director of the Department of Finance, the Director of GO-Biz, and one appointee each by the Speaker of the Assembly and Senate Committee on Rules. *An Imperial Valley project successfully received $3.1 million in the last allocation, the third largest award to date*

The first application period of this fiscal year for the California Competes Tax Credit (CCTC) started on September 29, 2014, with $45 million in tax credits available. The deadline to submit applications is October 27, 2014 at 11:59 (Pacific Time), and the online application website will automatically close once this deadline has passed. The online application can be accessed at www.calcompetes.ca.gov.

Imperial Valley Regional Algae Tour Imperial Valley Economic Development Corporation partnered with the Algae Biomass Organization to host a regional algae tour in Imperial Valley as part of the Algae Biomass Summit which was held in San Diego, CA on September 29 - October 2,

2014. Over 100 summit attendees including researchers and industry leaders, participated in a walk-through tour of Earthrise Nutritionals, Hyperlight and the Center for Energy Sustainability - San Diego State University, Imperial Valley Campus on September 29. Additional tour sites featured: CalEnergy Geothermal Plants, California Ethanol & Power, Canergy, IID - Unit 3, Imperial Valley College, John L. Featherstone Geothermal Plant, Mesquite Lake Energy Park, Ormat, Oberon Fuels, Salton Sea Restoration and Renewable Energy area and Synthetic Genomics. CaliBaja Bi-National Mega-Region CALIBAJA BI-NATIONAL MEGA-REGION SEEKS TO ATTRACT

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT The CaliBaja Bi-National Mega-Region seeks to attract foreign direct investment into the region. CaliBaja is set to host the 2016 World Forum for Foreign Direct Investment in San Diego, CA. On September 23, 2014 Bob Watkins, chairman, CaliBaja Bi-National Mega-Region traveled to London, England to engage site selectors, corporate foreign direct investment decision makers and senior real estate developers to garner interest in the region. "Being able to host the first World Forum for FDI as a bi-national event provides a prime opportunity to attract investment and job creation to San Diego County, Imperial County and Baja California," said Bob Watkins. Additionally, Carlo Bonfante, secretary of economic development, Baja California, Mexico and Juan Antonio Martinez, undersecretary of economic development, State of Baja California, Mexico, invited the CaliBaja Bi-National Mega-Region to join the Governor of Baja California Francisco Vega de Lamadrid on a trade mission to Tokyo, Japan. The Governor’s Office of Baja California believed a strong CaliBaja presence would create a favorable impression with Japanese executives. Thomas Topuzes, vice-chair, CaliBaja Bi-National Mega-Region was able to meet with many members of the delegation. Topuzes said, “Marketing as the CaliBaja Bi-national Mega-Region allows us to leverage our resources and distinguish our area as a global competitor.” The CaliBaja Bi-National Mega-Region is a globally unique bi-national location for business investments. CaliBaja encompasses the entire California - Baja, Mexico border region that includes San Diego County, Imperial County and Baja California, Mexico.
