    INTRODUCTION

KANDHARI BEVERAGES PVT. LTD (KBPL) is the approved franchisee bottler for Coca Cola

India to bottle various soft soft drink brands owned by CCI. KBPL is situated in Nabipur village,

in Sirhind block, in Fatehgarh Sahib District. Geographically, the plant is located near the Delhi

Amritsar national highway (Shershah Suri Marg). The founder of this plant is Mr. jaspal singhkandhari. CCI (COCA COLA INDIA) has two types of plants (COBO [Company-owned bottlingoperations] or FOBO [Franchisee-owned bottling operations]). This plant is not owned and

operated by Coca-Cola but is a franchisee-based operation (FOBO). The plant was firstestablished in December 1999, though it commenced production of CSDs (carbonated soft

drinks) only after six months of its inception, that is, June 2000. The plant area lies in the

planned industrial area of Fatehgarh Sahib district where the government encouraged industries

to be set up. In view of this, a tax holiday was also given for promoting new industries. But, as ofnow, KBPL, Nabipur, is the only largest industry in this region and no other big industries have

come up. The area, in spite of attempts of the government to set up industries, remains primarily

    an agricultural area.

The plant mainly produces CSDs in RGBs (refillable glass bottles), and PET (polyethyleneterephthalate) bottles. AMCOR is the supplier of PET bottles, which is an Indian PET

manufacturer company. The plant uses groundwater for production purposes.

    CAPACITY OF PLANT

The plant has one RGB line and one PET line. It installed one additional juice line in February2004. Potentially, the plant has the capacity to produce 500 RGBs per minute while PET line can

produce 120 PET bottles per minute. The juice line, running at full swing, can produce 166

    bottles per minute.

    MANUFACTURING PROCESS

The very first step of this process is to get water from deep earth through bore well. There are

two bore wells in KBPL. After getting water from earth it passes through 5 different purification

processes. First they store the water in water tanks having capacity of 15 KL each for chemical

dosing. Then it goes for sand filtration, carbon filtration, activated carbon filtration and

last for U.V light filtration. The water becomes free from pesticides, insecticides and all type of

impurities. The waste of water goes into A.T.Pplant for further consumption. The plant is totally

automated. After every season they change the filters and as necessary. Second step is

dissolution of sucrose and flavor syrups. They produce 2400 liter of CSD (carbonated soft

drinks) from 1 liter of syrup. Then another section comes where CO2 gas , and mixture of

sucrose and flavors filled into bottles through filter crowner. CO2 works as preservative, chilling

property, low PH and for taste. The filling of bottles happens at very low temperature and high

pressure. The output of machine is 420 B/M for thumbs up and varies from product to product. After all this final bottles goes for its packaging.

    CSR AND ENVIRNOMENTAL INTIATIVES BY

    KBPL

Water-related corporate social responsibility initiatives: Representatives of the plant

informed that the CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives largely focus on community

welfare and the maintenance of good neighborly relations with the surrounding community.

According to the plant, all community initiatives are need based, as identified by the community.

The unit reported that a good relationship of the surrounding villages with the plant prevailed

from the initial stages. CSR initiatives are under the charge of the Director General and an

assistant manager who also has other responsibilities, for example, water resource management

systems, in the plant. Since scarcity of water was not reported in the surrounding villages, theplant did not undertake any water initiatives till 2003. However, the plant management indicated

that they plan to construct an overhead tank in Nabipur as well as a few rainwater-harvesting

structures in the areas surrounding the plant. As per documents received from the CCI, the

company recommended the installation of a rainwater harvesting scheme at the plant in 2004.
