▼ INSuLAtING GLAZING ASSEMBLIES – GENERALTheseare sealedunits comprising twopanesofglasswhich,havingbeenassembledandsealedinthefactory,areseparatedbyaclosedhermeticspacecontainingairoraninsulatinggas.Themainaimofsuchassembliesistousetheinsulatingprop-ertiesoftheairorgasspacetolowerthethermaltransmittance(Ugvalue)oftheglazing.Thelatter’s insulatingpropertiescanbe further enhanced in variousways (low-emissivity coatings,gasandsoon).Theunitmaybedouble-ortriple-glazed.

▼ tHE AGc GuARANtEEWhen provided by AGC Flat Glass Europe, DGU are brandedThermobel.Theguaranteespecifiesthatvisionthroughitsinsu-latingglazingwillnotbeaffectedbycondensationordustontheinside of the unit. This guarantee does not cover breakage orcracksintheglassorreplacementwindowswhichhavebecomedefectiveoncetheguaranteeperiodontheoriginalglazinghasexpired.Pleaseseeduration,termsandconditionsoftheguar-antee.
▼ HEIGHtDouble-glazing units to travel through or to be fitted 800 mhigherinrelationtotheproductionlocationwilleitherbelev-elled out in advance in the workshop or will be fitted with alevellingmechanism.Itisimportanttospecifythiswhenplacingyourorder.
▼ MuLtIpLE FuNctIoNSBy varying Thermobel’s components, other functions can beobtainedwhichwill complement theglazing’s thermal insula-tion properties: enhanced thermal insulation, solar control,soundinsulation,safetyanddecoration.
THERMAL INSULATION
▼ INtRoDuctIoNThere are two types of assemblies providing thermal insula-tion:standardthermalinsulation(Ug>2)andenhancedthermalinsulation(Ug≤2):> standardthermalinsulation:consistsoftwopanesofPlanibel
glass> enhanced thermal insulation: in double glazing or triple
glazingwithoneortwocoatedglasses.Inallcases,theoverallUg-valueoftheglasscanbeenhancedby:> usingneutralandtransparentcoatingsappliedtotheglass.
Thesecoatingsare called“low-emissivity”or “high-perfor-mance”coatings
> makingthespaceraslargeaspossible> addingaWarm-Etypeinterlayerbetweenthetwopanesof

▼ WHY cHooSE tHERMALLY touGHENED HSt GLASS?The glass may contain nickel sulphide inclusions (NiS) whichcanvaryinsizefromafewmicronstoafewmillimetres.Theseinclusionshaveaspecialcrystallinestructurewhichisdifferentatlow(largervolume)andhigh(smallervolume)temperatures.In the case of a thermally toughened glass, the NiS acquiretheirstablestructureatahightemperaturewhentheglass isheatedtoapproximately650°C.TherapidcoolinginvolvedinthetougheningprocessdoesnotgivetheNiStimetoacquiretheirstable low-temperaturestructurebefore theglasssolidi-fies.Theglassisthereforeprocessedatitsoperatingtempera-ture.During this time, the increase in the volumeof theNiSinclusionscancausethesheetofglasstobreakspontaneouslyonceithasbeeninstalled.
Tolimittheriskofbreakage,thermallytoughenedglassescanbeheat-soaked.ThisentailsplacingtheglassinafurnaceataconstanttemperatureforaspecificperiodtoprocesstheNiS.AnybreakagecausedbycriticalNiScrystalswillthereforeoccurduringheatsoaking.
