It’s not garbage if it can be reused, repaired, recycled or composted. This handy guide is an update of our 2002 Reduce-Reuse-Recycle brochure. There are many new services available to help your household or business participate in a meaningful effort to reduce waste, support the local economy, and adapt to climate change. We estimate that every year, 20,000 tonnes of "garbage" are buried in local landfills. At least 75% of this can be recycled or composted with options that currently exist or will be available in the near future. For every tonne of material landfilled, 1 job is created. When that same tonne is recycled, 10 jobs are created. Use the map to find numbered locations; each location is only numbered once although some accept more than one product type. Also known as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), this regulation is based on the principle that suppliers, manufacturers, and consumers share the responsibility to minimize environmental impact of the products they make, sell and use. This system shifts the financial cost of recycling and disposal of products from all taxpayers to industry and consumers through a deposit-refund system, and provides an incentive to design products that will not end up in a landfill. Products covered under this regulation include: • Beverage Containers (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) • Lubricating oil, oil filters and oil containers • Electronics (August 1-TVs, VCRs, Computers, Printers) • Medications/Pharmaceutical products • Hazardous materials specifically paint, flammable liquids, domestic pesticide and gasoline (handled by productcare.org) • Tires • Tree marking paint Eyeglasses Check with local eye care shops and optometrists. Used glasses are redistributed through global aid programs. Hazardous Waste Consumer grade pesticides, flammable liquids, and gasoline are included in the ProductCare recycling program (see Paints for locations). These materials are better used up or avoided all together. Natural, non-toxic alternatives to pesticides and cleaning products are a better choice. Check out the Household Hazardous Waste Toxics Toolkit at rcbc.bc.ca for more information and simple recipes for making your own household cleaners. Climate Change and RecyclingThe manufacture, distribution, and use of products—as well as management of the resulting waste—all result inemissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that affect theEarth’s climate. Waste prevention and recycling are realways to help address climate change.

1 tonne of aluminum recycled = 12 tonnes ofcarbon dioxide (C02) prevented

1 tonne of newspaper recycled = 2.3 tonnes of C02prevented

The volume of one tonne of GHGs would fill a two-storey,three bedroom house. A typical late-model sport utilityvehicle driven 20,000 km per year produces 6 tonnes ofC02. For more information and ideas, seewww.onelesstonne.ca, www.climatechange.gc.ca &www.climatechangesolutions.com.
