CHAMPIONING CREATIVITY ACROSS THE ART AND DESIGN WORLD

This week was Thanksgiving over in the good ole U S of A and

so The Weekender decided to make a list of the things it was

truly thankful for. Unfortunately after several hours’ meditation

on the subject it was left with a piece of paper with the phrase

“jacket potatoes” scrawled in one corner, which was just a bit

sad. So here’s some things the Weekender is kind of grateful

for if you really twisted its arm – 1. Gin (delicious) 2. That

lions are either quite rare or in zoos (scared of lions) 3. Table

an ace birthday party). Onto this nonsense…

The secrets of The Weekender’s relentless energy and encyclopaedic knowledge of whimsical internet detritus have long been the subject of much debate, but have remained a closely guarded secret. Until now. You see, The Weekender exists in a state of perpetual hyperactivity, brought about by a regimented diet of caffeine pills, chocolate milk and Jammy Dodgers. In this heightened state of awareness it reclines in the centre of a multi-screen interface that bombards it with meme after meme of Paris Hilton photographs, Rick Astley and cats. You thought it was all fun and games over at The Weekender’s house right? Wrong, this is a serious business. Laugh with me!

This week we hung out with magazine cool-kids Vice, and talked publishing, parties and pissing people off, marvelled at the experimental poster creations of French designers, Helmo, and took some time to have an in-depth look at Hugo and Marie’s work for Rihanna’s latest album. Yeah, good. This week on Best of the Web, if we weren’t immersed in the womb-like plastic bubble of experimental living space Cocoon, we were waxing lyrical about the economic and social history of peanut butter or just thinking about what a great guy Jon Stewart is. He’s pretty great.-Creative Review served us up a delicious helping of Apple’s return to form in the world of print advertising, Dezeen showed us how to make our own glass-blown particle accelerator with the help of talented Hackney scientists Supercollider, and Port introduced us to one of the nicest, most philosophical piano repairmen we’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Critics of the weekEveryone knows that thanks to the shroud of anonymity prevalent online people are preferred to vent their anger about pretty much anything. But this collection of negative Google reviews of some of the world’s most stupendous sights has to be seen to be believed. Mount Everest is a particular favourite, dismissed simply as “Very bad.”

This week our studio was reveling in the intense heat of London’s week of summer – at last! – stocking up on Mars ice-cream bars by the dozen and sunning ourselves wherever possible. And yes, also giving out yards (Irish expression!) about transport disruptions that sunshine that the holiday smell of sunscreen made only mildly more bearable. We also had our Grads 2012 event, which was very exciting and filled with brilliant work and a fantastic mix of all sorts of talented people. In the meantime, we’ve received a massive variety of tremendous Things – five of which we showcase here in all their vibrant, fun-loving, map-addled glory. Enjoy.

This little publication is the limited edition, handprinted artwork for the newest music release from Zelt, 28° 8’ N 86° 51 E. Silkscreen printed in cyan and white on GF Smith Colourplan board and newsprint, it unfolds to reveal a beautiful mountainous landscape, full of distant peaks and icy summits. The title of the piece in fact refers to Mount Everest, and both artwork and the recording – the result of many years of improvisation and layering on home equipment – deals with the variously successful and ill-fated attempts to reach the highest point on the planet. Zelt consists of collaborative duo Phil Seddon and David Adams, and they officially released the tracks – which can also be streamed from their website.

I had to wear a tie all through school, but never a bow-tie. But I have always thought they were great. And Duval Timothy’s Bow Tie is super-great, because it’s handmade out of wool, is accompanied by beautiful “how-to-wear” illustrations, and comes in a bright red drawer-box that’s perfect for storage and also looks amazing – it’s like a staple bookshelf volume explaining how to be dapper in seconds.

It’s that time of the week again ladies and gentlemen, all together now; Uh-hmm, “Things, glorious Things! Hot sausage and mustard. While we’re in the mood, cold jelly and custard! What’s next?” is the question. And what’s next is this weeks Things, sent to us from all across the world. So sit back and enjoy this tuneful round-up of the delicious objects that landed on our plates this week.

he disclaimer which reads, “Take this book, but not your coffee, with a pinch of salt.” The book is full of illustrations and enough technical coffee information to shake two sticks at. All in all, it would satisfy even the most hardened coffee geek with its relevance while offering insights into general coffee related material such as when and how James Bond took his coffee in “Live and let die”. As it says itself in the front, “To everyone who enjoys their coffee more than the average person; this book is for you.”

CHAMPIONING CREATIVITY ACROSS THE ART AND DESIGN WORLD

YOUR NEW FAVOURITE PHOTOGRPAHER JANE STOCKDALE SHOWS US HER BOOKSHELF.

Wow! We didn’t know what to expect from Jane Stockdale’s seemingly bountiful bookshelf, but we had a feeling it would mirror her energised, powerful photographic skills that we have been gaping at in awe for years now. If you haven’t yet witnessed how Jane uses her camera to capture some of the world’s most electric moments from festivals to riots, it may be good to check out her website before you read on. You may have a new favourite photographer.

Brief-Its Nice That-D&AD

Brief-Its Nice That is an art and design web based publishing platform, which

attracts a diverse audience from creative directors to students. The brief is to

reconnect with the student audience through the promotion of the brand across

any medium. I have decided to develop the ideas of an already successful brand

with the ethos of interactivity. Creating an interactive app in which students can

connect with industry professionals as well as other students.

Concept-This section of the app is based around Its Nice That creating weekly

awards for students. This is not a new idea, however it is a proven one. Adding

competitiveness to the brand will encourage people to use the app and thus

create more interest in the brand. Prizes/awards will encourage students to

upload their work. I wanted to give this area of the app a more personal touch,

giving previous winners identities on the interface, as well as other students being

able to use it as a networking tool.

JESS KAYPhotography anyone can do.

We’ve written about a lot of Victionary’s new publications over the last couple of months, and who can blame us; they’ve got their finger on the pulse of trends in art, design and fashion more so than the vast majority of publishing outfits out there. So forgive us if we defer to them once again, but they’ve got another book fresh off the press and unsurprisingly, it’s a corker.

Concept-This plays on the interactivity of the design. I was aware I was

narrowing down the target audience to much, focusing on just Art and Design

students therefore I have decided to develop further a current idea on the website

that of ‘found’ things being displayed on the website. I have decided to create an

uploading platform, which will allow, not only students to upload art and design

but anything creating an area of inspiration as well as a discussion forum. Users

have the ability to pose questions as well as just look through for reference.
