* St Comgall (c. 510–520 – 597/602), an early Irish saint, was the founder and abbot of the great Irish monastery at Bangor in present-day Northern Ireland.

9:00hrs Meet the coach and driver for the start of today’s visits, the first of which is to Glendalough where we visit the early Christian monastic settlement that was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century and is the home to one of the most important monastic sites in Ireland.

Friday 18th AugustFull Day of visits

DAY 6:

Meet the coach for the start of your full day of visits which will begin with the transfer to *St Comgall’s Abbey in Bangor.

16:30hrs Visit to *Monasterboice High Crosses (see note).

17:15hrs Meet the coach and continue your journey to St Columban's in Dalgan Park, Navan.

17:45hrs Arrive in Dalgan Park for evening meal.

19:00hrs Evening Prayer in college chapel.

19:30hrs After Evening Prayer re-join the coach and transfer back to Dublin.

10:30hrs Audio-visual and talk at the Visitors’ Centre.

11:00hrs Guided pilgrim walk through Monastic City and to Upper Lake.

12:30hrs Meet the coach and driver for the transfer from Upper Lake to Laragh Community Centre. Light Lunch.

14:00hrs Once again, meet the coach for the transfer from Laragh Community Centre to Magheramore, the Columban Sisters' Motherhouse.

15:30hrs Eucharist and afternoon tea in Magheramore.

17:00hrs Join the coach and transfer back to Dublin to the hotel.

19:00hrs Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant.

Columbanus studied initially with Abbot Sinell of Cluaninis, before moving on to a monastery headed by the abbot, later canonized as Saint Comgall. It was under his direction, in the Abbey of Bangor in County Down, that Columbanus formally embraced the monastic calling, as one of a growing number of monks drawn to the Bangor community's ascetic rigor and intellectual vitality.

* Monasterboice Crosses date back as far as the 9th and 10th centuries and are internationally recognised icons of early medieval Ireland. There will also be the opportunity to see the Round Tower and early monastic ruins during your visit.

Note: As the group needs to leave the hotel very early tomorrow morning, please arrange for any incidental bills to be settled tonight.

Meet your coach and driver for a prompt departure to the airport for your flight to Basel.Arrive Dublin airport.

06:40hrs Departure of flight from Dublin to Basel (where the Swiss, French and German borders meet) (see note below).

On arrival in Basel, pass through immigration and customs to the arrivals hall where you will be met by your coach driver. Once the coach is loaded you will begin your journey to Luxeuil-les-Bains.

Open air Eucharist en route.

On arrival in Luxeuil-les-Bains you will be taken to the Abbaye St Colomban where accommodation has been arranged for the next three nights on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.

DAY 8:

Eucharist with parish community followed by reception and formal welcome to pilgrims by "Les Amis de St Columban" (The Friends of St Columban).

14:00hrs For those not wishing to join the Pilgrim walk, a coach will collect you from the Abbaye.

Breakfast is served in the Abbaye dining room.

Pilgrim walk to San Valbert. San Valbert was a place of retreat founded by the second Abbot after St. Columban of Luxueil. The Hermitage preserves some of the old ruins that have been restored in recent years.

15:00hrs Shared reflection and guided prayer in San Valbert.

17:00hrs Meet the coach and driver for the transfer from San Valbert to Luxeuil. A visit to the church in Fontaine for evening prayer and a short guided walk from the Church to the site of Columban's third monastery.

19:00hrs Once back in Luxeuil-les-Bains, dinner will be served at the Abbaye.

Note: Today you will be travelling to France. Please remember to keep your passport and airline itinerary/receipt, which constitutes your passenger ticket, in an easy accessible place for airport procedures. Please remember to pack any large containers of liquids (more than 100ml) inside your baggage that will be checked in. Any other small liquids must fit within a small plastic bag which cannot exceed a one litre capacity. Please also ensure that any electronic devices carried in the hand baggage e.g. mobile phones, tablets etc are sufficiently charged so that they can be turned on if required.

Monday 21st AugustSainte Marie-en-Chanois and Annegray

DAY 9:

9:30hrs A coach has been arranged this morning to take members of the group who wish to do the Pilgrim walk from Raddon to Sainte Marie-en Chanois, which is the site of the cave where St. Columban went to pray.Once these group members have been dropped off in Raddon, the coach will return to Luxeuil-les-Bains to collect the remainder of the group.

Breakfast is served in the Abbaye dining room.

11:30hrs They will join the coach for transfer from Luxeuil-les-Bains to Sainte Marie-en-Chanois.Moments of reflection and penitential stations on the site of where St Columban prayed.Packed lunch on site (depending on weather). Group members will have time in the morning (to purchase their lunch) before leaving Luxeuil-les-Bains.

13:30hrs After lunch, re-join the coach for the transfer from Sainte Marie-en-Chanois to Annegray (the location where St. Columban built his first monastery on the site of a ruined Roman fort). There is an opportunity for those pilgrims who wish to walk the final three kilometres to the site to disembark from the coach prior to arrival.

Upon arrival at Annegray there will be time for private prayer. Here is also an opportunity to do the Stations, walking around the ruins praying the prayers that are included in your St Columban prayer book.Guided pilgrim walk on site and Eucharist.

16:40hrs Re-join the coach for the transfer from Annegray back to Luxeuil-les-Bains.

18:00hrs Guided walk through the excavations in the town centre.Dinner tonight will be served at the Abbaye.

Tuesday 22nd AugustFrance to Austria (Luxeuil-les-Bains to Bregenz)

DAY 10:

9:00hrs After breakfast, check out of the hotel and load up the coach (Please check out of the hotel ensuring that you have paid for any extras, and all room keys have been handed into reception).

Today you will be travelling from France into Austria.

Breakfast is served in the Abbaye dining room.

10:00hrs En route a stop will be made at Le Corbusier Chapel in Ronchamp where the group will attend a Eucharist. The chapel was completed in 1954 and is one of the finest examples of the architecture of Franco-Swiss architect, Le Corbusier, and one of the most important examples of 20th-century religious architecture.

09:00hrs Pilgrim Walk to Gebhardsberg, a pilgrim site from early monastic times. Here you will also enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city and Lake Constance.

09:45hrs The coach will leave the hotel with those not on walk.

10:00hrs Mass in chapel on Gebhardsberg.

11:00hrs The coach will leave from Gebhardsberg and transfer to Lindau.

11:45hrs Walking tour of local town.

13:00hrs Personal time to explore.

16:30hrs Return to Bregenz via ferry on Lake Constance.Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant.

* St. Gallus is the original site of the church dedicated to St. Aurelia. When Columban first arrived at Lake Constance, he found that the Chapel which was dedicated to St. Aurelia, was being used for pagan worship. He commanded St. Gall, one of his disciples who spoke the local language, to preach and convert the inhabitants. Many were indeed converted and images of local gods were destroyed and St. Columban blessed the little church, placing the relics of St. Aurelia beneath the altar.

Friday 25th AugustBregenz to St Gallen and Disentis

Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant.After breakfast, check out of the hotel and meet your coach and driver. Today you will be travelling from France into Switzerland. This coach will now stay with the group until you reach Olivone.

09:15hrs Arrive St Gallen. * You will visit the Cathedral and the tomb of St. Gall who was the most famous disciple of St. Columban. He remained behind, to allow St. Columban to continue his journey over the alps.

08:15hrs Once the coach is loaded, start the journey towards Disentis stopping at St Gallen en route.

Morning Eucharist.After Eucharist, check out of Kloster Disentis and meet the coach and driver. Once the coach is loaded, begin the journey towards Olivone. Today you will be travelling from Switzerland into Italy. The journey will take you via the Lucamagno Pass and there will be several stops en route.Pilgrims wishing to walk a section of the Pass will have the opportunity to do so whilst others can make the journey on the coach.

Arrive in San Colombano al Lambro, a region noted for its wine production.

Breakfast is served at the Albergo.After breakfast check out of the Albergo, meet the Italian coach and driver in order to load the coach and begin the journey to Bobbio.

Mass in San Colombano al Lambro.17:00hrs Arrive in Bobbio.On arrival you will be taken to the Crypt of St Columban, the coach will continue to the accommodation with luggage. *Castello Sforzesco was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remains of a 14th-century fortification. Later renovated and enlarged, in the 16th and 17th centuries it was one of the largest citadels in Europe. Extensively rebuilt by Luca Beltrami in 1891–1905, it now houses several of the city's museums and art collections.

Thursday 31st August Milan to Rome

DAY 19:

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and meet the coach and driver to load up. Once loaded, transfer to *Pinacoteca Ambrosiana where a guided tour has been arranged.

9:30hrs

* The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana was established in April 1618, when Cardinal Federico Borromeo donated his collection of paintings, drawings and statues.

Inside the Pinacoteca, we admire some of the greatest masterpieces of all times: The Musician by Leonardo da Vinci, The Basket of Fruit by Caravaggio, The cartoon for the School of Athens by Raphael, the Adoration of the Magi by Titian, the Madonna del Padiglione by Sandro Botticelli and the magnificent Vases of Flowers by Jan Brueghel.

After the tour, re-join the coach and transfer to the railway station.

On arrival, unload the coach and make your way into the station.

A guided visit has been arranged to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

After Mass you will enjoy morning tea with H.E. Melissa Hitchman, the Australian Ambassador to the Holy See. The Australian Embassy is located on the other side of the Tiber to St. Peter’s.

This will be followed by a walking tour led by Columban Fr. Robert McCulloch through the historic centre of this magnificent city, during which time there will be an opportunity to purchase lunch. Return to the college.
