description

This document is a chapter from the book A Muslim Primer titled "The Status of Women". The book, which is marketed to adult audiences, describes itself as an attempt to explain Islam to Christian readers. The chapter contains numerous inaccuracies and a glaring omissions. The inaccuracies include unsupported and disputed claims that '1/3 of women in pre-Islam Arabia were slaves who went about unclothed', patently untrue claims such as 'women in Islam had rights not given to Western women until 100 years ago', and the anti-Muslim claim that Islam supports wife-beating. Perhaps the most ludicrous claim is that the Catholic church is "considering re-instituting polygamy as a Christian option", which would certainly be news to the Pope and other members of the Catholic clergy as well as ordinary congregants.Disregarded entirely is the fate of millions of Muslim girls, who are forcibly married under the age of fourteen or younger. This has been said to be the most serious health issue, and one of the most serious issues overall, in the Muslim world today. The fact that it is ignored is a stunning comment that 'the status of women' in both Islam and other religions remains minimal. The Verity Educate report and PENS website (www.newtonexcellence.org) have additional comments.
