ANZ’sInternational RescueOn the Cards readers regularly send us their ‘real life’ stories andwe look forward to receiving them. Unfortunately some of ourreaders have had their ANZ credit card stolen or been victims ofcredit card fraud. Thankfully ANZ has one of the most sophisticatedfraud detection systems in the world (see feature story inside)which means that if your card is stolen or misused, we can helpyou – immediately. Thanks to ANZ customer, Mr Ken Lorme, fortelling us his real life story.

Dear On the Cards,I was at a conference in Paris when I had my wallet stolen on theMetro. I never thought this would happen to me. I am relativelyyoung and fit. I knew my way around Paris having been therenumerous times.

I realised that it had been taken within one train stop. I immediatelycancelled my credit cards. Upon calling my hotel a few minuteslater, I had a message from my wife in Australia that the thieveshad charged $7,000 on the card. ANZ, had picked up thetransaction and phoned her. All this happened within 15 minutesfrom the time of theft.

I was really nervous at this point. I knew all my cash was gone,and that I would need to replace my licence etc, but now I maybe up for $7,000.

I spoke to an ANZ representative from the police station and theyorganised a cash advance. I received this at my hotel in a fewhours. They also arranged a temporary credit card which I coulduse for the remainder of my trip.

Everything that the representative said would be delivered (cashadvance, temporary credit card) was delivered, on time, to theexact location. My wallet and it's contents were gone, but withoutthis service I would have had a very miserable trip.

When I called home, the bank had cancelled the $7,000transaction. I was relieved.

I learned a powerful lesson on what goes on behind the sceneswith our credit cards. There is a very sophisticated network to help.I never gave this any thought before this episode. The price I payfor the use of my credit card is well worth this behind the sceneshelp alone.

Unfortunately credit card fraud is fast becoming a factof life and while we all need to take some basic stepsto protect our cards from misuse, sometimes even themost vigilant person can be an unwitting victim ofcredit card fraud.

Of course you may have travelled to Perth that veryday and the transaction, although a bit of out theordinary, might have been perfectly legitimate.
