Residents asked to take part in study

COOS COUNTY — A project to install new radio towers to improve 911 service in Coos County is progressing.

On July 13-17, site surveys of radio tower locations were conduct-ed by members of Coos County first responders and the vendor for the project, according to a press release from the Coos County Sher-iff’s Office. The project was funded through a tax option levy approved by Coos County voters in May.

In the two months since voter approval, an im-plementation committee comprising the Coos Forest Protective Association, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, the Bandon Rural

Fire Department, the Myrtle Point Fire Department, Myrtle Point Ambulance, and the police departments of Coos Bay and North Bend have met weekly and bi-weekly with Codan, the vendor for the project.

During this past week, two engineers from Codan, as well as two site survey engineers from Microwave Networks (a sub-contractor to Codan), have traveled around Coos County inspecting and surveying sites for use in this project, as well as attempting to identify equipment that can be re-used in the hopes of keeping costs to a mini-mum.

“The plan is to replace the countywide simulcast

radio system with a more encompassing system which will allow radio communications throughout a larger portion of Coos County,” said a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

The current system, which has been failing for the past few years, had been built around a “ring” of tower sites situated more on the western portion of Coos County. The new system is being planned to encom-pass a larger territory. The new system will also use updated microwave dishes with larger bandwidth to transmit radio message from multiple agencies in an expeditious manner.

The site surveys were conducted to inspect the

sites for needs to upgrade the system. The cities of Coos Bay and North Bend and their radio systems were evaluated also to cre-ate a plan for their upgrade.

Three dispatch centers in Coos County, two of which are primary 911 centers, are connected to all govern-mental first responders via radio except for the Oregon State Police.

“Coos County is a large county, with approximately 1,800 square miles of land,” stated the Sheriff’s Office. “Many missions face first responders from ambu-lance calls, to structure fires, wildland fires, police enforcement and search and rescue in the vast forest lands. This new system is

being designed to encom-pass all of these missions and challenges.”

The implementation committee will continue to update the voters as the project continues.

COOS COUNTY — About 110 Coos County residents have signed up to report their temperature and other COVID-19 symptoms for up to one year.

Why? To provide state and local officials infor-mation that will help them make decisions about how to keep Oregon open and safe.

Since it was announced in May, the Oregon Health & Science University-led Key to Oregon study has been measuring COVID-19 prevalence throughout the state. So far, nearly 9,000 Oregonians have enrolled

statewide.The study aims to enroll

up to 100,000 randomly se-lected Oregonians, who will spend less than 10 minutes a day to report their tempera-ture and other symptoms on a secure website. Up to 10,000 of those enrolled will also be selected for asymptomatic testing, or testing those who do not have symptoms, to better measure an often-invisible source of COVID-19’s spread.

Those who take part are helping protect their families and communities. OHSU will share study

findings with state and local decision makers, who can use the data to make decisions to meet the state’s economic and social needs — including reopening or closing local businesses and schools — while also protecting human health and lives.

“We are deeply grateful to those willing to volunteer their time to this important work,” said the study’s lead researcher, Jackie Shannon, Ph.D. “Each person who spends less than 10 minutes a day on this study will help us better understand how the virus is affecting Orego-

nians. If you were randomly selected, please consider taking part to help your community stay open.”

Nearly 3,400 Coos County households have been invited to participate in the study, and should have received mail notices in May. Those mailings includ-ed instructions about how to enroll online. If you lost your invite but are interested in enrolling, send an email to [email protected].

CORVALLIS — As the Oregon State Univer-sity Extension Service Master Food Preserver program turns 40, its ho-tline is once again ready to take calls.

The toll-free hotline at 800-354-7319 runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Fri-day. When the hotline is closed, callers can leave a message. The hotline is staffed by certified Master Food Preserver volunteers and is avail-able statewide.

Calls to the hotline are expected to boom during the pandemic as people discover the satisfaction of growing and pre-serving their own food. Already this year, food preservation questions to OSU Extension’s Ask an Expert online service have more than doubled compared to the first half of 2019. June alone saw a fourfold jump in que-ries, according to Teresa Crowley, who staffs the Master Food Preserver program.

Started 40 years ago in Lane County, the program has grown to include 324 Master Food Preservers, who must complete an eight-week course to be certified and start volunteer shifts on the hotline.

In 1980, Nellie Oehler, a co-coordinator and one of the founders of the program, recognized the need to provide food safety and preser-vation information for people putting up food, a practice that soared during the back-to-the-earth movement that started in the 1960s and ran through much of the 1980s. As the program got started and volun-teers stepped up for training, the idea of a hotline emerged and one was started in 1990.

“We were getting a lot of calls at the local Extension offic-es,” Oehler said. “The Extension Service has always been known for research-based food preservation information.

We were getting calls from all over.”

So, the hotline was born. At first, calls were only taken in the 541-area code, but as de-mand grew, the program switched to an 800 number to service all of Oregon. Many people were working from iffy online sources or old family recipes, which were outdated or had safety issues.

“Old methods were popping up that weren’t safe,” Oehler said. “Our No. 1 goal was to pre-vent foodborne illness-es.”

At least 60% of ques-tions have food safety implications, she said. Some could have serious consequences.

“That’s why I think it’s important to have the hotline,” Oehler said. “We do save lives.”

And now, customers at a Pacific Northwest retailer have another option for learning about food preservation. In partnership with OSU

Extension, Bi-Mart has placed signage and information in food preservation aisles in the employee-owned chain’s 80 stores in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

The Extension-de-signed posters and brochures provide tips on canning, freezing, smoking, pickling, drying, jerky and jams and jellies. They come complete with a QR code that, when scanned with a smartphone, takes you to OSU Extension’s Home Food Safety and Preservation website with additional informa-tion.

“Gardening, my good-ness, gardening is crazy,” said Don Leber, vice president of advertising and marketing for Bi-Mart. “All these people are think-ing ‘What will we do with all this food?’ We’re think-ing of a lot of the newbies who may not know how to start. And now with OSU’s help, we’ve got the infor-mation. It’s a match made in heaven.”

Most commonly, hotline callers ask about preserving salsa, to-matoes and tuna. OSU Extension offers publica-tions on each: Salsa Rec-ipes for Canning, Can-ning Seafood, Canning Tomatoes and Tomato Products and Safely Canning Foods: Pres-sure Canners, Pressure Cookers and Electric Pressure Cookers. Search the Extension catalog for “Food Preservation” and you’ll find more publica-tions, including some in Spanish.

Extension’s Ask an Expert, an online ques-tion-and-answer service, is another way to get information. Post a ques-tion and an expert will get back to you within 48 hours. They can offer in-formation about anything related to food preserva-tion from safety concerns to recipes.

There’s a free app – Canning Timer & Checklist – that provides reminders of essential steps in the canning

process.Also, check out the

new Facebook page and Instagram page.

Additionally, many Extension offices offer free pressure gauge testing. The hotline vol-unteers can provide you with information specific to your county.
