In the heart of the city lies Piazza del Duomo, designed by celebrated architect Giovanni Vaccarini, surrounded by elegant baroque buildings and the Basilica della Collegiata. DAY 5: VALLETTA, MALTA Founded by the Knights of St. John and deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site, Malta’s picturesque capital offers a grand collection of honey-colored limestone buildings and ancient fortifications. See the Caravaggio tour de force The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist inside St. John’s Co-Cathedral. DAY 6: CORFU, GREECE Relax along the idyllic coastline of Corfu with its unique coastal landscapes and cypress-studded hillsides. Progress inland and uncover the city’s layered history through the variety of its architecture—ancient ruins, eighteenth-century palaces, and a European colonial-style old town. DAY 7: KOTOR, MONTENEGRO Beneath the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovc ´ en lies the secluded coastal city of Kotor. Settled during Roman times, this medieval, UNESCO-listed walled city showcases narrow streets, Venetian architecture, and the twelfth-century St. Tryphon Cathedral. DAY 8: SPLIT, CROATIA Split is a town built around the Roman palace of Diocletian, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the historic palace then check out Split’s Archaeological Museum, peruse the many restaurants and shops in town, or climb up to the bell tower of St. Dominus Cathedral, the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world. DAY 9: RAVENNA, ITALY Captivating Ravenna is an off-the-beaten-path treasure filled with Byzantine charm. Explore the city’s eight UNESCO-listed churches and mausoleums adorned with incredible early Christian mosaics and frescoes.
