The Italian “Research Doctorate”

is the formal equivalent of a PhD

was established in Italy in 1980

represents the third academic qualification after Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree

is the highest academic degree

Structure and Features

half of available PhD positions are covered by state grants

PhD Programs are from three to five years in length

during this period, students study in depth the research field of the PhD Program, develop research capabilities and carry out a personal research project

according to the Statistic Office of Education, University and Research Ministry, in 2006 in Italy about 12.000 doctoral students were admitted at PhD courses

THIRD YEAR Drawing up of doctoral thesis. PhD candidates are invited to give seminars on the results of their research
