LOVING HEARTS AND HANDS KNIT AND CROCHET GROUP
Our March meeting was attended by fourteen ladies. Many beautiful articles were turned in. We have been receiving thank you notes from recipients of the holiday bags filled with our works, which were distributed in December to Mott Hospital. They cheered young children to a lovely note from the niece of a ninety six year old resident of a Livonia nursing facility. Our brightly colored items such as shawls, lap blankets, afghans and hats bring so much cheer to those who are ailing. We are also donating some of our works for the Silent Auction at the Guardian Angel event to support the St. Louis Center.

NOTE FROM THE IACL BOARD OF DIRECTORS: As outlined and explained at the General Membership Meeting on April 25, 2017, the Board of Directors unanimously decided to increase the price of weekly pasta dinners. This change is necessary to keep pace with increased inflation and costs of food service, entertainment and overall operating expenses. As you know, the prices have not been adjusted in SEVERAL years. Be assured that this price increase merely covers our cost of operating and does not in any way reflect a profit to the IACL Club or Banquet Center. The Board has decided that it is in the best interest of the membership and the future of the IACL to no longer lose money week after week, year after year. The price increase has begun on June 1, 2017. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with our efforts to reduce operating costs as we continue to improve our Club. NEW PRICING: Members: $15.00 | Non-Members: $20.00 | Children: $7.00 Sincerely, IACL Board Of Directors
THURSDAY NIGHT PASTA RUSTICA
Martini Madness KaraokeMartini Madness Karaoke was held on May 18th at the Italian American Club of Livonia Lower Level. It was such a fun time that we decided to make this a yearly event. The martinis were flowing at the bar which helped Gabriel from Downriver Karaoke and DJ Services motivate the guests to sing their hearts out. The light up martini glasses were a hit too.
Club Members Rose Paulus and Joe Todaro were recently in Milwaukee Wisconsin during the 3rd week of April to be part of Rose’s grandson’s wedding.
Eric Borchert was married to Cassandra Wagner in Milwaukee on Friday, April 27, 2018. It was a great day...as family arrived from Florida, Texas, Michigan and other parts to celebrate.
Eric is an art teacher in the public-school system and Cassandra is in the business world.
The couple will reside in Milwaukee. Eric is Rose’s first grandchild to marry and it was very exciting for us all! Congratulations to the family.

Italian American Club of Livonia Supports St. Louis Center in 23rd Year
The Italian American Club of Livonia held its 23rd annual dinner/dance fundraiser at its Banquet Center on Sunday April 29, 2018 to benefit St. Louis Center in Chelsea, MI. Led by Committee chairwoman Mary Galasso, Past President of the IACL, more than 200 people were present to enjoy a wonderful gourmet dinner of Chicken Florentine, Penne Pasta with Palomino sauce, and twice baked potatoes prepared by Chef Nandi. The day began with Mass in the lower level with Fr. Enzo Addari, SdC. as celebrant at noon, and participants enjoyed a silent auction, mini-bar raffle, and a gift raffle during the event. After dinner, guests enjoyed gelato from Carvel’s, delicacies from Dunia Sweets, homemade Italian cookies baked by club members, and fruit from Joe’s Produce.
Deacon Mike Martin of St. Mary Parish in Chelsea, MI received the St. Louis Guanella Humanitarian Award for his spiritual work with the poor on the streets of Flint, and shared his experiences of helping the homeless, bringing people back to the faith and teaching job skills to help many become employable. Following the Guanellian Award, Maria Harris, chair of the Italian American Club Charitable Foundation, made a donation of $5,000 to assist the needs of St. Louis Center. Finally, the popular Amici Band performed for the crowd and brought people to their feet while performing “classics” from the 70’s and some of the crowd’s favorite traditional Italian music. Traditionally, this event has been a benefit to defray the expenses of the St. Louis Center transportation program, including the purchase and maintenance of vehicles, the cost of fuel, and the salary of a driver for the residents.
St. Louis Center is a residential care facility located in Chelsea, MI west of Ann Arbor that cares for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is run by the Servants of Charity; a Catholic missionary order of priests founded in Italy, and has been in operation since 1960. For more information about St. Louis Center, please visit www.stlouiscenter.org.

CULTURAL COMMITTEE
The IACL is strongly aligned with St. Louis Center in Chelsea, Michigan and sponsored the 23rd annual “Be An Angel” Dinner Dance on April 29 th in our beautiful Banquet Center. This event was previously held annually the last Sunday in January; however a Committee decision was made to move the event to April, a wise decision. Father Enzo, our IACL chaplain for many years along with our Committee agreed that this year’s fund raiser was the best. We raised over $25,000 for the benefit of the Center’s transportation expenses which include keeping three vans in good operating order and filled with fuel to transport the residence to school, work, doctor appointments and miscellaneous destinations. CULTURAL COMMITTEE
The mission of our Club and especially that of our Cultural Committee is to preserve the Italian Heritage which Maria Stante, our Cultural Committee Chair, is committed to doing. The Committee each year presents such events as La Befana, Carnevale, Ferragosto and on Thursday, June 7 th again held the tradition of celebrating the birth of Italy as a Republic with the FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA.
On June 2, 1946 shortly after the Second World War and the fall of Fascism the people of Italy were called to the polls to decide on the form of government – monarchy or republic. After 85 years of reign the male descendants of the House of Savoy were exiled and the Republic of Italy was born.
Our members and guests observed the procession of flags from USA, Italy and our staunch neighbor and ally Canada. Each countries’ anthem was honored at attention and Past President of IACL, Mary F. Galasso, narrated briefly on the significance of this special event noting that Italy now has twenty regions, similar to our various States and the fact that Italy and the United States of America are and have been strong allies since that significant event.

By: Gina Ruggirello It can be hard to believe that a new schoolyear is rapidly approaching as we begin to see the sun set on Summer 2018. For many of you, this new chapter has you traveling far and wide as you begin at a university. Although this transition can be nerve wracking to say the least, here are a few ways students and parents can help make the move a bit easier.
For the Student: For the Parent: Only bring the essentials! Managing living in a tight space requires you to utilize every nook and cranny you can get, so pack smart!
Shop smart! Try to buy any merchandise in advance and from stores outside of college towns, as these will often be picked over during move-in time.
Although it may be scary, put yourself out there! Try meeting some fellow hallmates during the first few days at school.
Encourage them! Social opportunities are nearly endless on campus, but sometimes a little nudge in the right direction is in order.
Stay fit! I promise you, there will be plenty of free time in college. Make use of it by continuing your workout regimen, or try a new class with a friend.
Teach healthy eating habits! Overeating and foregoing meals can be an issue for stressed students, so highlight the power of brainfood!
Show up to class! Not only will many of your classes be taking attendance, but being actively engaged in lecture gives you a better chance of succeeding.
Be supportive! College is different for everyone: some students take longer to adjust and this can show up in their academic performance.
Make good decisions! Remember: your primary purpose at any university is academic. Don’t put yourself in a situation where that could be jeopardized.
Be trusting of your student! If you are apprehensive about their new beginning, try to compromise a call schedule where you can check in with each other and catch up.
“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently” – Henry Ford

The Italian American Banquet & Conference Center is proud to announce that we have been awarded the 2018 Couple’s Choice Award from Wedding Wire. This is the second consecutive year that we have received the Couples’ Choice Award.
This award represents the top 5% of Wedding Profes-sionals on Wedding Wire. The Couples’ Choice Award honors the exemplary work and the highly regarded reputation we have established with our clients.
Winners are selected solely based on reviews from Newlyweds & are determined by a combination of excellence in four factors:1. Overall Rating2. Total Number of Reviews3. Review Performance from the Previous Year4. Consistency of Reviews from Year to Year
We are one of eighteen wedding venues in Metro Detroit that has received this award.
Congratulations to the Italian American Banquet & Conference Center Staff for all of their hard work. This great year would not have been possible without all of you. We cannot wait to see what’s to come!
