It Takes a Village:Family FindingBootcamp
6–10 July 2015
This is how the radical Family Finding approach works and these skills will be taught by Kevin Campbell to participants at the first Family Finding training to be held in Australia.
Resolutions Consultancy—the home of Signs of Safety—is proud to host Kevin Campbell’s first visit to Australia. This work-shop offers five days of Family Finding demonstration, coaching and hands-on learning to equip child protection professionals to find naturally connected networks for vulnerable children.
”Every child has family and they can be found
if we try.”

This five-day bootcamp offers hands-on train-ing, focused on finding naturally connected family in current Australian cases brought by participants. All attendees will be asked to identify one case they want help with to find family and naturally connected networks for a child or youth they are involved with. All attendees will be required to sign confidential-ity agreements to enable the approach to be demonstrated with participant’s actual cases.
To begin the week, Kevin will provide an in-troduction and overview of the model. From Monday afternoon onwards Kevin will demon-strate the Family Finding methods with actual cases, demonstrating the search and engage-ment tools and skills. Once Kevin has demon-strated the methods with two cases explaining and answering questions as he goes, partici-pants will then practice these skills on their own cases, working in small groups with Kevin providing coaching and assistance throughout.
When participants have learnt the search and initial engagement strategies and skills, they will then learn how to lead the initial Family Finding planning meetings. This will include how to work with the family support network so they become lifetime supports for the child, youth and parents.
During the five day programme participants will learn all aspects of the Family Finding Model including:
• Participatory continuum
• Three family meeting agendas
• Local and international search strategies to quickly find naturally connected networks
• Scripts for contacting and engaging family members
• Methods for building child and youth participation
• Methods for transforming parent involvement
• Community partnership strategies
• Youth permanency values
• Meeting facilitation skills
This five-day bootcamp will be both
practical and inspiring and will
fill fast so book early to join Kevin
Campbell at the beautiful Burswood
on Swan in Perth.
Family Finding is the most radical approach yet devised to equip child protection services to act with urgency to find and involve every naturally connected person available to support the vulnerable child or young person.
Dr Andrew Turnell
“ When we started the bootcamp we were all saying, ‘How can we possibly do this Family Finding work given our high case loads and the daily demands on us?’ By the end of the week, the discussion had shifted we were all saying, ‘How can we not do this work?’

Kevin Campbell is the founder of the Center
for Family Finding and Youth Connectedness.
Kevin developed Family Finding to find life-
long supports for children and young people
in foster care and for families involved with
child protection service.
He has provided training and assistance to
child welfare agencies throughout North
America in implementing Family Finding.
Considerable research has demonstrated
the effectiveness of the approach and has
drawn US federal government attention and
endorsement. The use of Family Finding has
been mandated in law by presidents Bush
and Obama in 2008, 2011 and 2014.
With its success in North America, Kevin is
increasingly introducing the Family Finding
approach internationally. Kevin has spoken
and published extensively on Family Find-
ing and youth permanency including being
featured twice on CBS 60 Minutes, the Wall
Street Journal, New York Times, Time Maga-
zine and many other publications. For more
information see www.familyfinding.org.
Resolutions Consultancy is directed by Dr Andrew Turnell and is the home of the Signs of Safety.
Andrew Turnell and Kevin Campbell have recognised that Family Finding and Signs of Safety are sister
approaches aimed at placing children, parents and extended families at the centre of child protection
services. To foster this work Kevin and Andrew have formed an international partnership to assist
practitioners and agencies to use and integrate the models they have created.
