The Hudson iT 2011 salary guide reflects how salaries have fluctuated across the industry. These figures have been researched by our industry experts and come from a variety of sources including job offers by clients, candidate disclosure of salaries and advertised salaries. we have also taken into account current market conditions and forecasts as well as our many years of collective experience between our recruitment experts.

it is important to note that all salaries are dependent on a number of key factors such as size of company, location, industry and so forth. while it does vary across the technical skill/role, a standard rule of thumb is that for

the majority of roles, those in junior positions will have two to four years experience, intermediate four to ten years and senior over ten years' experience. This document should be used as a guide only and please note that the figures are base salary and do not include the bonus or benefits element of the role.

please feel free to contact one of our consultants if you have specific queries as they would be delighted to assist you.

Regards

Hudson IT

following on from the global financial crisis, we began to see gradual improvement in the early part of 2010, and this has continued into 2011 so far. The london iT sector has now picked up some pace with the fastest rise in permanent salaries for the last number of months. The volume of hires taking place however, is not sufficient enough to absorb the job losses in the public sector.

it appears that the same vertical markets are continuing to lead the way in hires such as financial services, insurance and professional services sectors.

On the contract/interim side of the market we have started to see rates gradually increasing again, although still nowhere near where they were prior to the global financial crisis. The number of contract/interim hires has also steadily risen in volume.

2010 was a year for recovery, as the south west technology market began to show signs of sustained growth for the first time since 2008. The major catalyst for change was the revival of permanent and interim recruitment in the financial services sector and renewed confidence from investors in technology firms looking to build neat tools for the modern web.

The financial services sector has deep roots in the south west. with the commencement of large-scale regulatory and organisational change programmes, we experienced a major spike in the recruitment of technology professionals. project managers, business analysts and testers were top of the list for banks, seeking to integrate systems and platforms as a result of mergers, or third party development projects. salaries and contract rates for such candidates have risen sharply.

it’s fair to say the recruitment merry-go-round is back in action in 2011; we’ve seen the highest levels of permanent and interim technology hiring since the credit crunch began and this has been experienced broadly, both by geography and industry. a question mark remains over if we have yet to feel the full brunt of the public sector cuts, but the early signs are that the private sector is holding up its part of the bargain in the south west.

we have also seen a surge in the life, pensions and investments sub sector in 2011,with the emergence of numerous small-medium sized platform providers bolstering the regions recovery and status as a home to talented domain specialists.

renewed confidence in the technical start-up space and fresh investment from venture capitalists has seen notable growth among young technology companies with fresh ideas and relevant products. The south west has produced some bright sparks that are making international waves across software as a service, Cloud computing and smartphone application development. strong software developers, with skills in modern web technologies, continue to be in high demand.

HOme COuNTies

On the whole 2010 was a relatively tough year for iT, although certain emerging technology areas continued to grow, most notably Cloud computing and cyber security.

with the uk government having to make some tough decisions around budgets and spending cuts there was an inevitable freeze in ‘new hire’ recruitment strategies. The freeze appeared to affect every part of the public and not for profit sectors, in particular at the strategic projects and new programme rollout stages, across the NHs and local government.

to the market, albeit tentatively, beginning their hiring process once again. This was initially to fulfill replacements for those lost due to natural attrition, then more latterly to recruit managerial and strategic posts. There has also been a noticeable focus around emerging technologies and business critical projects, which may previously have been postponed due to uncertainty over budgets.

although there has been a slight increase in the number of available candidates in the marketplace over the last 12-18 months, outstanding candidates and specific skill sets are still in high demand in the Home Counties. This appears to have positively contributed to maintaining, and in some cases increasing salary levels to pre-down turn levels.

within the sme space we have noted a level of growth, while not quite at the pre-downturn volume, a positive result, especially as the spectre of a double dip recession passed. a level of confidence also appears to have returned within Commerce & industry, most notably within retail, fmCg, pharmaceuticals and financial services. The telco sector has been slower to respond, any growth has been predominantly driven through change and transformation programmes. Current activity levels point towards greater growth as we move further into 2011.

iT temporary and interim staff levels were sustained or grew slightly in some areas, compared to 2009, the most notable growth was in the final quarter of 2010. Towards the end of 2010 clients started to come back

THe midlaNds

with such a large exposure to the manufacturing sector, the midlands' iT market was always going to be severely hit by any downturn which affected industry and consumer confidence and therefore the likelihood of any capital outlay. as a result job losses, closures and restricted working practices were extremely common.

However throughout 2010 and 2011 so far, the midlands is showing signs of a much recovered industry. Confidence has returned to the region and the weak pound has meant overseas demand for manufactured products, particularly the precision engineered or prestige goods which the midlands so excels at, has increased significantly.

This has had a knock on effect in terms of an increase in demand for both operational and project focused technology professionals. it has also meant that rates and salaries have recovered almost to their pre 2008 levels. indeed they have even increased for those with “in demand” skills such as erp, solutions architecture and business intelligence.

levels. This has resulted in an end to the decline of rates and salaries in the North and for candidates with in demand skill sets such as C# or business intelligence, salaries have actually increased.

The only fly in the ointment of this recent upturn is the plight of some candidates in the public sector, who are facing up to mandatory salary or rate reductions, or in some cases redundancy.

THe NOrTH

The iT market was undoubtedly one of the first markets to feel the pinch from the credit crunch, 2008/2009 and early 2010 were certainly some very difficult times for the iT sector in the North. The North is one of the main uk centres for banking and professional services outside of london, but it experienced project freezes and postponement, job losses and redundancies. This led to a huge increase in the number of available technology staff in the market, both contract and permanent. The consequence was a reduction in salaries and day rates.

On a positive front, iT was one of the first sectors to come out of the recession. with recovering business confidence, large technology projects are re-emerging and being restarted with renewed vigour, as they are, in effect, two years overdue. Hudson iT estimates demand for technology staff to have increased roughly fourfold from 2009

Throughout 2010 we experienced growth, particularly in the financial services sector which grew rapidly creating employment for many contractors. while sme, engineering and new company formations/consolidations created exciting new opportunities for permanent staff to move into new roles.

The significant growth in vacancies has resulted in 2011 seeing the return of the candidate driven market in both the contract and the permanent marketplace. High quality candidates, especially those with good all round skills, encompassing iT and broader business skills, can expect several offers, counter offers or buy back offers from their existing employers and significant wage rises accordingly.

while the outlook for iT in scotland is positive we do anticipate challenging times ahead as a result of skills shortages which will require many employers to reconsider how they attract new candidates and more importantly, how they retain existing employees.

growth in contract pay has in general slowly climbed throughout 2010, with pressure points in certain skill sets. There are, however concerns that starting salaries for permanent staff are beginning to increase, potentially limiting opportunities for job creation and further business growth in the future.

key areas of demand for the remainder of 2011 are expected to be similar to those in demand throughout 2010:

| project and programme management

| pmO

| Business and systems analysis

| Testing

| agile/scrum methodologies

| .Net developers

| Java developers (all flavours)

| middleware and storage skills
