I have also emphasized the fact that Jesus is everything to us and that he has indeed done wondrous things for us. It is so easy to get caught in a loop, however… We go through the year and do the same things over and over and think often, “Well, here we are again.” We say this, forgetting that the person you are today has never been “here” before. We are always changing. As we go through our liturgical year or our seasonal year for that matter, we should always come to the various celebrations with a sense of newness. Our years are not circular; rather, they are spiral. We descend more deeply into our lives just as certainly as we continue further in time in them, too. As we come to the situations in our life, we come ever new. In our lives, we often stagnate; we often get used to how things have been and when change happens, we react not always to protect the good, but rather to protect the familiar. What I come to in prayer as I consider these things is a constant reminder that our focus should be on us, in as much as we are in Christ and share his life. The most important thing that we do is come together and celebrate this fact. All of our disagreements, differences, feuds, and quarrels amount to nothing but silliness when we realize what we receive at Christmas—when we realize that he who is coming into the world calls us to love without exception. The light has entered the world—a light that no darkness can extinguish. These are not just words; it is a reality of the life we share. God has given you his joy and true fullness. This Christmas, put out of our heart and mind all worry and care, if only for just a few hours, and after Christmas, make celebration of the good God has done for you the center of your life. Celebrate everything, for you have gained everything. The night may come, but the sun has risen; Christ has been born, the darkness is over. Don’t be afraid; you have everything. Merry Christmas from a servant truly grateful for all you are to me! Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others.

As we quickly (in about 4 hours) approach Christmas, we come closer to the full

realization that God became human. I have spent the last few weeks speaking about this

event, mostly to encourage a reflection on what this means. I have also emphasized the fact

that Jesus is everything to us and that he has indeed done wondrous things for us.

It is so easy to get caught in a loop, however… We go through the year and do the same

things over and over and think often, “Well, here we are again.” We say this, forgetting that

the person you are today has never been “here” before. We are always changing. As we go

through our liturgical year or our seasonal year for that matter, we should always come to

the various celebrations with a sense of newness. Our years are not circular; rather, they are

spiral. We descend more deeply into our lives just as certainly as we continue further in time

in them, too. As we come to the situations in our life, we come ever new.

In our lives, we often stagnate; we often get used to how things have been and when

change happens, we react not always to protect the good, but rather to protect the familiar.

What I come to in prayer as I consider these things is a constant reminder that our focus

should be on us, in as much as we are in Christ and share his life. The most important thing

that we do is come together and celebrate this fact. All of our disagreements, differences,

feuds, and quarrels amount to nothing but silliness when we realize what we receive at

Christmas—when we realize that he who is coming into the world calls us to love without

exception.

The light has entered the world—a light that no darkness can extinguish. These are not

just words; it is a reality of the life we share. God has given you his joy and true fullness.

This Christmas, put out of our heart and mind all worry and care, if only for just a few

hours, and after Christmas, make celebration of the good God has done for you the center of

your life. Celebrate everything, for you have gained everything. The night may come, but the

sun has risen; Christ has been born, the darkness is over. Don’t be afraid; you have

everything. Merry Christmas from a servant truly grateful for all you are to me!

Your servant in Our Blessed Lord,

Fr. Michael

When the World Was Dark

When the world was dark and the city was quiet, you came. And no one knew. Only the few who dared to believe that God might do something different.

Will you do the same this Christmas, Lord?

Will you come into the darkness of today’s world; not the friendly darkness as when sleep rescues us from tiredness, but the fearful darkness, in which people have stopped believing

that war will end or that food will come or that a government will change or that the Church cares?

Will you come into that darkness and do something different to save your people from death and des-pair?

Will you come into the quietness of this place, not the friendly quietness as when lovers hold hand, but the fearful silence when the phone has not rung, the letter has not come,

the friendly voice no longer speaks, the doctor’s face says it all?

Will you come into that darkness, and do something different, not to distract, but to embrace your people?

And will you come into the dark corners and the quiet places of our lives?

We ask this not because we are guilt-ridden or want to be, but because the fullness our lives long for depends on us being as open and vulnerable to you as you were to us, when you came, wearing no more than diapers, and trusting human hands to hold their maker.

Will you come into our lives, if we open them to you and do something different?

When the world was dark and the city was quiet you came. You crept in beside us.

Do the same this Christmas, Lord. Do the same this Christmas. Amen. From “Cloth for the Cradle” by the Iona Community, 2000

from your St. Benedict Parish family

Sharing the Gospel The angels shared the good news about Jesus so people could worship him, too. Maybe it was the way they glowed when they sang about Jesus. Maybe it was the words or the tune of their songs. After the angels left, those shepherds were curious enough to stop what they were doing and look for Jesus themselves. When they found him, they were thrilled. Everything the angels told them was true.

Prayer God, I am thankful that the an-gels and the shepherds spread the good news about Jesus.

Christmas Outreach 2017 Thanks to the many parishioners who have participated in recent weeks in so many ways to share their time, talent and treasure to make Christmas 2017 a bit brighter for others in our area. Over 50 families rang bells on December 2 as part of

our seventeenth annual participation in the Salvation Army red kettle fundraising.

Dozens helped sort 1000 pair of mittens in Dougherty Hall on December 3.

Our Angel Tree gift tags this year shared the wants and needs of so many local and area children and families.

In Bloomfield, 19 local children received gifts. 20 local migrant children received gifts.

In Canandaigua, 147 local children received gifts. 157 migrant children from Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Marion will receive gifts on Epiphany. They are mem-bers of 184 local families and 76 Marion families who requested assistance. Each of those families also re-ceived a food basket through the kindness of the St. Vincent de Paul Conference and the people of our faith community. In Bloomfield 110 families benefitted from the inventory at the Blessing Room.

We provided 56 presents for Friendship House in Mid-dlesex and 85 gifts to the children who attend Keuka Lake School for developmentally challenged pre-schoolers in Penn Yan. We also provided gifts for 8 local teens who will not be able to spend the Holidays with their biological families.

We cared for the needs of 161 senior citizens at Commu-nity Place on Parsells Avenue in Rochester and 46 in Elm Manor Nursing Home.

We reached out to 30 persons at the Victim Resource Center in Newark and 26 at Safe Harbors in Penn Yan.

...a lot of tags …a lot of needs ...a lot of outpouring of Christ’s love and generous sharing of our resources. Many thanks! And all that doesn’t even begin to measure the abundant inventory of donations for this year’s Christmas Shop on December 15. This year we saw over 600 adults and chil-dren seeking gifts for loved ones at the holidays.

The Gratitude Continues Many, many thanks for all the wonderful knitted mittens, hats, and scarves that you made and bought for the children of our St. Vincent de Paul Santa Helpers Program. Respons-es to our request were wonderful again this year. A sincere thank you to the many individuals and groups who supported this year’s Christmas Basket Program with your many acts of kindness and compassion. Your donated items have been distributed to 184 families in the Canan-daigua and Farmington area this Christmas Season. You have brought great comfort to those most in need. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to the Academy basketball teams for moving the food from the back of Dougherty Hall to the front of the Hall and the Academy lacrosse team for helping to carry the food boxes and present bags to the recipient’s cars. This project could not have been completed without their help. May God bless you and your families.

A Note of Thanks St. Bridget’s parish community would like to thank Jean Singer one of our oldest parishioners, and Kyle Marianacci for the restoration of the parish nativity set. Jean who is celebrating her 90th birthday this month painted the new Bethlehem scenery for the manger. Kyle whose grandfather Dominic constructed the crib some fifty plus years ago, re-fashioned the framework so it might last for another gener-ation. Our thanks to all involved.

Mina Ford & Caryl Favro checked in the guests at the Dec. 11th distribution of food & gifts in Bloomfield.

A glimpse of Dougherty Hall filled with food & presents for 184 families

Unwrapped gifts were available for guests in Bloomfield.

Dozens of new coats were offered to guests in Bloomfield.

Sadie McKee & Margo Page have welcomed guests in Canandaigua on distribution day for the last 18 years.
