SAMBORZEC

General info

Samborzec is in Świętokrzyskie province, the south – east of Poland, in the Samborzec commune. The village is 156 kilometers ( 2 hours and 20 minutes by car) from the city of

Samborzec and about 10 km (10 minutes by car) from Sandomierz.

The village of Samborzec is located on theedge of Sandomierz Upland, in its northwestern part, on the border os Sandomierz Baisn, near the river Vistula.

In the Samborzec commune there are over 9 thousand citizens.

There are over 70 villages, and 3 Roman Catholic churches in Samborzec, Chobrzany and Skotniki.

First settlements in this area appeared around 4 – 7 thousand years ago.

The founder of Samborzec was a knight called Sambor. He founded this village in 13th century.

FAMOUS PEOPLE-Antoni Rewera

-Władysław Miegoń

Antoni Rewera: Father Antoni Rewera was born in Samborzec in 1869 (6 I). He was the parish priest in St. Joseph parish in Sandomierz and the professor in the local seminary. During the II World War arrested by the German police (Gestapo), died in the concentration camp in Dachau (Germany) on the 1 X 1942. Proclaimed blessed by the Pope John Paul II in 1999.

Władysław Miegoń: Father Władysław Miegoń was also born in Samborzec in 1892. He was A.Rewera’s nephew. He worked as a chaplain and the commodore in the Polish Naval Forces. During the II World War he voluntarily joined his fellow officers arrested by the Germans and was transported with them to the Dachau concentration camp. Tortured and tormented to death on the15 X. Beatified by the Pope John Paul II on the 13 VI 1999.

The Holy Trinity Church in Samborzec

The Holy Trinity Church in Samborzec was built in the XIII century. It is the largest monument in Samborzec. In the church there is an altar of the Holy Trinity. Near the church it is the parish cemetery.

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH IN SKOTNIKISkotniki parish was mentioned in documents dating from 1323r. as the property Bogoriów Skotnicki . The first stone church was founded in 1347r. by Jarosław Bogoria - Archbishop of Gniezno. The consecration of the church takes place in 1370r. The first major renovation was carried out in the 2nd half of the eighteenth century, when it was built porch and two storey atrium of the vestry.

St John the Evangelist Church in ChobrzanyAt the beginning of the nineteenth century

in order to build a new church was built. The founder of the new church was Jan Brzeski. In 1864. the temple was burned. The present church was built in the years 1870-1872.

The first church in Chobrzany was built in the fourteenth century, founded by John Cave (bp. Kraków). It was a wooden church and in the late eighteenth century was already much ruined.

and was rebuilt througout the centuries. Nowadays it still belongs to the sme Skotnicki family although nobody lives in it. The family lives in Warsaw.

mansion house is located in Skotniki. It was originally built in the XIII century by the Bogoria Skotnicki family

It is a small chapel near the church in Samborzec. Built in 1956. It is located on a hill below the church.

CULTURE AND EDUCATION

The Festival of the Blossoming Apple-Trees takes place annualy, on the second Sunday of May. The celebration begins with the holy mass in the local church. After that all the participants walk to the square near the community office where they can celebrate and enjoy the time in the atmosphere of the family picnic. Pupils from the local schools as well as invited pop bands perform on stage.

In Samborzec near the main road there are kindergarten and schools: Primary school- for children from 6 to 13 and Secondary school for children 13 – 16.

Nature

Loessal hills and ravives are an inherent part of the landscape of the area. The picturesque ravines are the result of the action of rain on the loessal rock. The most beautiful one, the St Queen Jadwiga ravine is in Sandomierz. But Samborzec area can also be proud of numerous lovely ravines.

This is Koprzywianka river which is meanders through the Samborzec commune.

Apple-trees orchards are predominant on the area of Samborzec commune. They are worth seeing in the time of blossoming, the end of April and the beggining of May.
