    presentuniqueiconicimagesoftheVirginMaryholdingabowlthatradiatestonguesoffire,imagesthatpredatethefirstliteraryaccountbyChrtiendeTroyes.GoeringarguesthattheyweretheoriginalinspirationfortheGraillegend.[3][4]AnotherrecenttheoryholdsthattheearlieststoriesthatcasttheGrailinaChristianlightweremeanttopromotetheRomanCatholicsacramentoftheHolyCommunion.AlthoughthepracticeofHolyCommunionwasfirstalludedtointheChristianBibleanddefinedbytheologiansinthe1stcenturiesAD,itwasaroundthetimeoftheappearanceofthefirstChristianisedGrailliteraturethattheRomanchurchwasbeginningtoaddmoreceremonyandmysticismaroundthisparticularsacrament.Thus,thefirstGrailstoriesmayhavebeencelebrationsofarenewalinthistraditionalsacrament.[5]ThistheoryhassomebasisinthefactthattheGraillegendsareaphenomenonoftheWesternchurch(seebelow).
