Indirect free cooling

A typical application for free cooling is the provision of cold water for cooling data centres and servers. This makes it possible to reduce the operating load hours of the refrigerating machine, so saving a significant proportion of the energy costs.

When the ambient temperature is low, the re-frigerating machine can be switched off com-pletely. This means: – Reduced energy costs – Longer refrigerating machine service life – Less maintenance

Series connection

If the ambient temperature is 2 K below the fluid temperature (Ta = 18 °C), the fluid is pre-cooled in the fluid cooler and the refrigerating machine takes over the remaining cooling. From a specific ambi-ent temperature (e.g. 6 °C), the fluid cooler takes over 100 % of cooling and the refri- gerating machine is switched off.

For maximum energy savings Maximum use of free cooling

Parallel connection

When the ambient temperature reaches the level where the fluid cooler can take over 100% of cooling, the valves are actuated. The fluid cooler takes over the cooling. The refrigerating machine is switched off.

Approx. 50 % of energy saved thanks to free cooling

Free cooling can be used to cover a large proportion of the installation’s annual operating hours. The following example shows the maximum possible savings in energy costs as a result of installing the fluid cooler and the refrigerating machine in series.

Example: – The fluid cooler and chiller are connected in series. – Load profile: Year-round cooling required for server cooling

– Cooling water for servers 22/16 °C

Figure 1The figure shows the annual operating hours of the refrigerating machine and the fluid cooler using a server cooling system in the Frankfurt am Main area as an example. At ambient temperatures ≥ 18 °C, only the refrigerating ma-chine is operating. At ambient temperatures ≤ 6 °C, only the fluid cooler is operating and the refrigerating machine is not required. Between 6 – 18 °C, the fluid cooler takes some of the load off the refrigerating machine and both systems operate in combination. This type of installation leads to a significant reduction in energy costs.

With this type of graph, the number of operating load hours for the three sections in Figure 1 can be read directly.

At an ambient temperature of 12 °C, 50 % of server cooling is provided via free cooling. At an ambient temperature of 6 °C, 100 % of server cooling can be provided via free cooling.

Telefonica O2 When it comes to cooling its server rooms in the Nagano-Center in Prague, Telefonica O2 relies on Güntner GVHX condensers with particularly quiet, Energy Efficiency Class A EC fans.

In two rooms covering a total area of approx. 2,000 m2, 29 DX precision air conditioning systems each with a cooling capacity of 105 kW and another four systems each with a cooling capacity of 50 kW were installed in order to cool the emergency power supply system. All systems have a dual-circuit design. Consequently, a total of 66 condensers – 58 with a condensing capacity of 64 kW and 8 with a condensing capacity of 31 kW

– were installed on the roof. In order to minimise the energy consumption of the cooling systems, they are designed for a temperature difference of approx. 10.5 K (the small units for just 8 K). Telefonica O2 opted for the GVHX units with microox technology not only because of their high level of operational reliability but also because of their significantly lower weight. After all, the microox coils are made exclusively of aluminium.

Thanks to the integrated free cooling heat exchanging coils, the old cooling systems are still used to safeguard free cooling operation in winter.

Colocall Internet Data CenterThe Colocall Internet Data Center is located in Kiev, Ukraine. The data centre provides server capacity for private and business customers. What makes it so special is the fact that it is housed in a former Soviet nuclear bunker which was converted into server rooms. The data here are protected not only by the building itself but also by the reliable cooling provided by Güntner's heat exchangers. 12 Güntner FLAT Compact GVH condensers, 38 CUBIC Compact GHF air coolers and a V-SHAPE Vario GFD fluid cooler are used in the centre.

Grass Merkur data centre Grass Merkur, a service provider in the fields of data centre services, consulting and software, operates a data centre in Hanover which meets the very highest requirements when it comes to security and cost-effectiveness.

In order to reduce energy costs, two Güntner GFD systems, each with a cooling capacity of 300 kW were installed. The fluid coolers reduce the burden on the refrigerating machine and, at ambient temperatures below 17 °C, take over the entire cooling of the data centre.

Data centre of an insurance company in CologneThe insurance group in question is one of the biggest in Germany. Six Güntner GFD fluid coolers with the HydroSpray system provide free cooling for the data centre in Cologne. Güntner's patented SectionCycling control system reduces the spraying time, saves water and guarantees that the fluid coolers work at full capacity up to an ambient temperature of 40 °C.

Güntner server room The new server room at the Güntner headquarters in Fürstenfeldbruck went into operation in 2011 and features an energy-saving air conditioning system based on the company's own fluid coolers.

120 kW of cooling capacity is required for the final expansion stage. Two Güntner GFW systems each with a cooling capacity of 120 kW were in-stalled to cool the water-cooled refrigerating machines and for operation as fluid coolers. Depending on the ambient temperature and the cooling load, the fluid coolers are switched to free cooling mode one after the other.

Nowadays Data CenterThe Nowadays Data Center is located in Sofia, Bulgaria. Server systems are installed across an area of 1,200 m2. During planning, particular attention was paid to energy saving components and redundant systems. Only components from renowned manufacturers were used. The two large FLAT Vario fluid coolers with a capacity of 1,200 kW operate as free cooling units at low am-bient temperatures and as part of a water-cooled cooling system at higher ambient temperatures.

Moscow II Data CenterThe Moscow II Data Center is located on the site of the Kurchatov Academy. The data centre covers an area of 3,500 m2 and can accommo-date up to 900 server cabinets. It meets all the requirements of the TIA-942 standards as regards redundancy and reliability. It uses FLAT Compact GVHX condensers from Güntner with microox technology. Each cooling system has two con-densers in order to ensure redundant operation.

1&1 data centre in Karlsruhe – 100 % operational reliability

1&1 Internet AG, one of the biggest Internet providers in the world, was on the lookout for a system to cool its new data centre in the Baden-Baden area. The centre is to be developed into a central node in international data traffic offering 100 % operational reliability.

The new data centre is located in a former army bunker. It offers space for a total of 80,000 Internet computers as well as the necessary discretion.

The systems for operating the data centre include not only the all-important refrigerating machines but also emergency power supplies and re-cooling units, all of which were to be installed on the roof of the data centre. So also the size of the machines had to be taken into account during the planning stage.

In order to maximise operational reliability, 1&1 demand-ed three completely independent cold water circuits for the data centre cooling system. In order to make the solution viable from the point of view of CO2, dry ambi-ent air coolers which, via an intermediate glycol circuit, efficiently support the water chillers from temperatures of approx. 10 °C were provided in addition to the air-cooled water chillers. Combitherm, the plant contractor

enlisted to install the system, chose three water chillers each with a capacity of 900 kW. Each machine features two screw compressors, two compact stainless steel plate heat exchangers (each with an assigned cold water pump) and a condenser with a particularly high power density which was specially developed by Güntner for this purpose.
