PLAGIARISM
10
Kaplan University maintains a firm stance against all forms of plagiarism and faculty are required to investigate any questionable submissions from students. The University maintains a database of student plagiarism charges, and students who plagiarize repeatedly will be subject to increasingly serious repercussions. These are:
1.First Offense: The instructor notifies the student that he/she has failed the assignment, and explains the nature of the plagiarism and that the incident has been submitted to administration. The instructor completes the Plagiarism Report form located at the Center for Teaching and Learning site http://intranet.kaplan.edu/CTL, which automatically notifies the Provost’s Office of the charge. The Provost’s Office officially informs the student that he/she has failed the assignment. The Provost’s Office mails a letter and sends an electronic copy to the student that informs the student of the action taken and includes a copy of the plagiarism policy. The Provost’s Office informs the Academic Department Chair and the Academic Advisor of the incident.
2. Second Offense: The instructor notifies the student that he/she has failed the assignment, and explains the nature of the plagiarism and that the incident has been submitted to administration. The instructor completes the Plagiarism Report form located at the Center for Teaching and Learning site http://intranet.kaplan.edu/CTL, which automatically notifies the Provost’s Office of the charge. The Provost’s Office officially informs the student that he/she has failed the course. The Provost’s Office mails a certified letter and sends an electronic copy to the student that informs the student of the action taken and includes a copy of the plagiarism policy. The Provost’s Office informs the Academic Department Chair, the Registrar’s Office, Student Accounts, and the Academic Advisor of the incident. Since the student is allowed to remain in class, the instructor should enter zeros for both past and future assignments, and maintain a backup of the assignments in case the student decides to appeal the plagiarism charge.
3. Third Offense: The instructor notifies the student that he/she has failed the assignment, and explains the nature of the plagiarism and that the incident has
been submitted to administration. The instructor completes the Plagiarism Report form located at the Center for Teaching and Learning site http://intranet.kaplan.edu/CTL, which automatically notifies the Provost’s Office of the charge. The Provost’s Office informs the Dean, the Registrar’s Office, Student Accounts, and the Academic Advisor of the incident. The Provost’s Office officially notifies the student that he/she has been expelled from Kaplan University. The Provost’s Office mails a certified letter and sends an electronic copy to the student from the Provost to be signed, dated, and returned by the student.
