BHUTAN SELF DRIVING EXPEDITION 7th - 12th April 2019
Experience the mysterious mountain kingdom
THE LEGENDS SERIES
THE LEGENDS SERIES
It's time to put your vehicle into gear and drive
towards the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Druk
Yul or the country of the Dragon people is an
incomparable melange of high mountains,
dense forests, adventure sports, ancient
monasteries, and an economy that is measured
by the happiness of its people. It is a montage of
cultures, lifestyles, languages and belief systems
and is said to be the last 'Shangri-La' on earth.
Bhutan is an explorer's dream come true. Its
location delivers a striking landscape; from the
precipitous, rugged mountains and deep valleys
to the North to sub-tropical forest and bamboo
jungles in its South. This is where legends are
discovered.

THE LEGENDS SERIES
After breakfast, we begin our around 243 km
journey to Thimpu in Bhutan with our first stop at
Phuentsholing. This is where we apply for entry and
vehicle permits for Bhutan - and yes each and every
participant's presence is required for the biometric
scan! Once we receive our permits, it's onward
bound to Thimpu, the fourth highest capital city in
the world. After a sumptuous dinner we call it a
night.
Day 1Chalsa Hills - Thimpu | 243 kms
Once you arrive at Chalsa Hills and check in to the
resort, spend your day at leisure and unwind before
the ensuing adventure. Meet your fellow explorers
over a pre-drive briefing later that evening,
followed by dinner.

THE LEGENDS SERIES
It's time to break our respective fasts and indulge in
a hearty morning repast. We check-out to visit the
13th century Buddhist Monastery and fortress -
Tashichho Dzong. The whitewashed structures
stand in stark contrast to the towers at each of the
four corners, which are topped by triple-tiered
golden roofs. We then make our way to a vibrant
Buddhist temple on the outskirts of Thimpu, which
offers sweeping views of the city nestled amongst a
typical Bhutanese backdrop. Our last local visit, is to
the Great Buddha Dordenma, a colossal
Shakyamuni Buddha statue nuzzled amongst the
massifs surrounding Thimpu. Having obtained our
additional permits at Thimpu for visiting Punakha,
we drive out to the 3,100 metre Dochula Pass which
is famous for its 108 stupas. We stop for lunch at
Chimi Lhakhang and visit the fertility temple
blessed by the "Divine Madman," the eccentric
saint Drukpa Kunley. Once we are literally and
philosophically satiated, we barrel our way towards
Punakha, the erstwhile capital of Bhutan. After
appeasing our nighttime hankerings with dinner, we
call it a night.

After an early breakfast, we begin the drive
towards the Vale of Paro. Paro is a historic town
with numerous revered sites and ancient
buildings speckled across its location. We visit
the second largest fortress in Bhutan, and one its
most majestic. The dzong (fortress) houses the
sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage;
part of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
Post lunch, we visit Kyichu Lhakhang, an
important 7th century Himalayan Buddhist
Temple.
We end our local sightseeing with a visit to the
National Museum, which houses over 3,000
works of Bhutanese art, covering more than
1,500 years of Bhutanese cultural heritage. We
end our day with appeased appetites and
awestruck dispositions.

shrine is a Bhutanese cultural icon. Return to the
hotel, for dinner.
