Signs of Hope in the City International Society for Urban Mission

June 28th-July 1st, 2014

Summit Aims and Vision:

Theme: Signs of Hope in the City Rationale: The International Society for Urban Mission (ISUM) was formed in January, 2012. ISUM was

formed to bring together individuals, churches, networks, and organizations in order to collectively face the unique challenges that rising urban poverty poses to Christian faith and mission. ISUM’s purpose is to be a fellowship of urban Christians committed to seeking God’s Shalom in cities, especially Majority World cities, through active reflection, solidarity and leadership development.

Approach: The ISUM Summit Planning Committee, in partnership with the World Evangelical Alliance – Theological Commission, Micah Network, and Malaysian Care seeks to facilitate an interactive, participatory conference including hands-on immersion opportunities, keynotes, workshops and panel discussions. Key practitioner themes, best practices, reflective prayer, active Bible studies, calls for collective action and case studies/story telling will be featured.

Objectives:

Our aim is to “seek the peace of the city” (Jeremiah 29:7) for our various urban cities scattered around South East Asia and the globe. We hope that by the end of our gathering, we will have accomplished the following goals:

• Collaboration between urban Christians from a variety of backgrounds, including Ecumenicals and Evangelicals, Majority and Western world thinkers, activists and leaders, Church movements and development agencies

• Collective action and thought in an international and integral context • Gain mutual understanding, in order to attain a comprehensive picture of urban mission

around the globe; Information sharing and best practices – learning from our mistakes and seeking solutions

• Recommendations and calls to action to the broader church - these ISUM Summit Briefing Papers will be formally written by the Working Group facilitators after the summit has ended

• Build trust, wisdom and be inspired to better engage our new urban world About Us: www.newurbanworld.org
