Individual Pig Care Workshop
– Utilizing tools from Zoetis that were donated to National Pork Board
– Teach differences between A, B, and C pigs.• A head to tail, top to bottom observation of every pig
• A basis of pig health and body condition
• Dictates different treatment and care options
• Provides a common language/classification for contract growers/farm/system staff and DVM
– And how do we communicate care options?• DISC analysis and training
Caretaker action depends on whether a pig is an A, B, C, or E Pig
▪ Individual Pig Care assessment at the Pig Level provides a classification
system, so caregivers can effectively communicate the status of a pig’s
health to their production manager using a ranking system:
– A pigs: Acute, treat and leave in pen
– B pigs: Subacute, treat and leave in pen
– C pigs: Chronic illness, treat, pull to fallout pen; watch for signs
of progress
– E pigs: Humanely euthanize
Individual Pig Care Workshop
• Focuses on 4 of the 5 critical audit failure portions of the
Common Swine Industry Audit
• Modular so workshops can be customized based on the
producer’s method of euthanasia
• Encompasses animal and caretaker safety
Euthanasia Workshop

Common Swine Industry Audit2018 Revisions- some clarification for auditors – following items could affect production sites and producersAnimal Observations:
• Excessive prod use was added as a willful act of abuse for consistency with the transport/load-out section.
Record-keeping
• A 12-month retention requirement was added to the maintenance log for euthanasia equipment to equal other records retention requirements.
• An equivalence was granted to the Canadian Quality Assurance/Animal Care Assessment program, allowing Canadian sites to use this program in place of PQA Plus Site Status.
• The standard for broken needles was modified to clearly indicate which sections are required in an SOP and which sections are examples of that information.
• The biosecurity standard was modified to better describe the required elements of a biosecurity SOP as well as required elements of a rodent control plan.
• Two SOP questions were combined into one; the rodent control plan is now a required element of the biosecurity SOP.
Caretaker Training
• Additional language was added to the caretaker training section to allow Youth PQA certification for caretakers 14 years of age or younger.
• A modification was made to the elements of the euthanasia plan that caretakers must articulate

CSIA Frequently Asked Questions
• Does one audit cover all of my sites?– No, sites are defined by Prem ID. Packer determines sites to be audited.
• Who gets copies of the audit?– Since the packer owns the audit, they will get a copy as well as the site.
All questions and clarifications will be done with the packer.
• Will auditors be required to follow biosecurity protocols?– Yes. The auditors are trained to follow the site’s biosecurity protocols to
prevent the accidental transmission of diseases. When the auditors
contact the farm to schedule the audit, they are to ask about biosecurity
restrictions and observe them.
